I'd go for Half Life 2. I've finally got FEAR and it isn't that good really. The location really, really ruins it. It's all drab and grey and rather crappy. If the locations had more life to them (at least in the opening 3 levels), it'd be a great game

Duke Nukem 3D for the Pig Cops.

Farcry.
Biggest disappointment would be HL2. It was just... meh, too similar to everything else before it.

BattleField 2, and Call of Duty. I love realistic war (well game isn't too realistic anyway).

Pretty much ^_^ System shock 2 is worth playing if you love Deus Ex btw and haven't tried it.

Battlefield 1942.
It's just about the only shooter which requires true teamwork, especially in clan matches..
BF2 is not far behind, but BF1942 is still better in my humble opinion.

For my money it has to be either Half-Life or Deus Ex ... both games i've replayed more times than i care to count. HL2 is genuinely nothing special once the novelty of the gravity gun wears off, so if you HAVE to buy something farily recent get Doom 3. Play it in the dark late at night and it will invade your dreams :D

Red Neck Rampage!!!!!
A game where you could take booze to heal yourself but if you had to much you got drunk and started walking sideways is worth playing. 
On a more recent note....Doom 3 and Doom 3 Return of Evil are quite good. Dunno about FEAR or QUAKE
HL2 is a good game and I guess any person that likes FPS should play it
I've just got Call of Duty2 and I intend to give that a try as soon as I finish AOE III

HL1: Nothing could beat it for at least 5 years.
HL2: Because its simply the best most well rounded FPS there is
FEAR: If you got the PC to run it then it looks good but has boring gameplay and 'grey' look, with the odd scene that makes you jump
FAR CRY: I hate the auto save points but loved the outdoor scenery at the start

Tbh the only FPS i consistently play is Marathon... 10 years of playing a game, now thats fandom ;p
