BF2 4tw
HL2 had a great single player but some things really ruined it for me as you'll probably find out
Getting Q4 tommorow and i'll have to pick up P.H.3.3.R as i've heard a lot of good things about it ________________________________________________________

My gf has bought me FEAR and it looks awesome.
Other favourites at the moment are Joint Operations, BF2 and HL2.

if you havent played half life 2 yet your missing out, and free counter strike source is an advantage, i've played the F.E.A.R demo and the singleplayer seems really good, i've heard the multiplayer isn't that good tho,
singleplayer : Half life 2 multiplayer: Battlefield 2

I'd personally get half-life 2, as far as i'm concerned that is the best single player experience money can buy.

For single player, Half Life 2. Even after you finish it there's plenty of mods to go through, and the gameplay itself was great fun (I mean really, ripping a radiator off the wall and catapulting it at Combines is always fun, not to mention controlling giant spider like insects and watching them do the dirty work for you).
The only multiplayer FPS I play is Planetside, it's great if you don't mind the monthly fee but I'd probably go for BF2 instead.

Half life 2 & CS:S are both excellent games.
I owuld say BF2 is the best, but all these 'upgrades' havent really helped fix a lot of issues, and tbh, i find it hard to find a server with a playable ping. *BUT*, when BF2 is good.... it's really REALLY *REALLY* good ---------------

So many!
HL2 BF2 Q4 FEAR(havent played yet but ment to be very good)
For me Doom3 sucked, it was boring and repetative and only scary at the start. Farcray again very good to start with, but just got boring after a while.

I still think VietCong is one of the best shooters (singleplayer and multiplayer), but the game might be a little bit too hardcore for easy going entertainment. Operation Flashpoint is one of the best games ever, but it isn't exactly a shooter, and it is definately too hardcore for someone who just wants to blast through some nice graphics (which Flashpoint lacks totally).
Right now, Battlefield 2 rules the multiplayer FPS genre. Funny enough, it seems to be a bit too hardcore for some as well, the concept of actually having to cooperate to win seems to be unacceptable to ALOT of people.

If you only get 1 FPS
I would get HL2.
It comes with HL2, CS:S and there are so many mods for it.. it will last you forever.. its definatly worth it.

shoot 'm ups have single play? in that case tomb raider 1 to infinity for the auto lock
multiplayer: 1. RTCW:ET (return to castle wolfenstein: enemy territory 100% free and the source code is released so community keeps it up to date with tons of mods and maps) and ... 2. UT 200# (the original stays the best till the end it seems tough)

For single player HL2 rocks, but for multi player it has to be Day of Defeat, the WWII mod for the original HL. DoD Source is out soon for the HL2 Source engine, if it's anywhere near as good as DoD original it'll be the best multiplayer ever.
