Depends on your style and what you want to do. The crow I feel is overpriced (based on prices in Tash Murkon region). It fetches around 18 mil whereas the taranis sells for about 9.5 - 11 million.
Pro's for crow: No tracking needed, rockets fire fast and therefore fast orbit is possible, however a kestrel can do it for an 8th of the price.
Con's: Max range of 10 km for the rockets. Any closer and your in web range, further and your out of rocket range. Missles do bugger-all damage to inties and assault ships.
Pro's for taranis: flexible, can fit rails or blasters. With reasonable gunnery skills 125mm rails will hit over 10 km range, keeping you out of web and nos range (except for fancy pants webs and nosses). If you like close fit blasters and a plate and it does savage damage.
Con's: I find more people are starting to loadout explosive missles and rockets as the taranis has been the flavor of the month for a while. It is also fairly slow and I feel that because so many are getting about, many have experience in killing them.
I hope this helps, I have both but I prefer the Taranis. I am getting my skills to use the claw so that I can get some idea of the other side of the coin. Have fun.

In Lonetrek a crow cost around 10m as well.

Kestrel is much slower/heavier (40% less base speed and 70% more mass) this makes them a large slow target and it has no missile velocity bonus, as rockets have the lowest velocity (not counting torps) they need the bonus.

With level 4 in relevant skills you have 12km range, with level 5 15km.
I would say the largest con with the crow compared to other ints is its dps. Other ints can fit for short range high damage but there is no such option for the crow making it inflexible.

Everyone seems to mention rockets but stds are also quite cool and have a long range, perfect for taking out slow ships, such as cruisers from ~20k scramble range

True but light missiles are of course crap against smaller ships, very hard to keep 10-20km against another interceptor that's going near 4km/s. Besides, your missiles only deal 2-3 damage then anyway...
Rockets are awesome. Damage goes up to 56.X damage on hull with 2 Ballistic Controls with 1.98 rate of fire (spec 4/MLO 5/Rapid Fire 5)

i agree with helpdesk missiles are a no no for crows. Crows i think are equal or a bit better than ranis but htey need more skills with skills u can fire rockets above 10k with ease and they always hit for 50+ with 1xbalistik.whereas 125 II with very good skills some times miss or have crappy dmg like 20. Also with skills and 1 balistic the rof of rockets is just under 2 sec which is quite fast. Dont ever i mean ever put blasters on a ceptor every decent crow pilot will have a 90% web on(lifesaver) so u wont even get to ur failoff. so skilled rockets vs skilled 125 II i would go for rockets so i would go for crow. if we where talking about projectiles then things might be different but for rails.....

A crow very nearly killed my ranis with standards a couple of times in one night out in 0.0 ... even though they don't have the rate of fire of rockets that extra range REALLY hurts, espeically when you have a blaster set-up to shoot back with.

It is very easy to keep range when you do around 4300m/s with just one nanofiber. Use three and you should be able to comfortably control the range.
But I wish they would fix the bloody missile skills. With target navigation prediction to IV I only get 400m/s (On base 1000m) extra explosion velocity. Great so Inties only go 3 times over the explosion velocity, instead of 4. And the crow has bloody lousy DPS to start with .Weeeee.
I do love my crow though. So fun to use against people that rig purely for damage. None of my Inties have a range less then 15km's because of evil crows.
And I heard the noise of thunder. And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him |
