I'm not sure what to choose. I'll be using the megathron for L3 missions.
Could I get some advice? Thanks. |

But its ugly.
Jk, I can check that out.
However, the question still remains. For L3 missions are blasters better for their tracking speed, or will 350mm rails do fine? |

Rails will work best at full range when you have ships approaching you as they line up their transversal with your line of fire, thus doing max damage due to more direct hits. However, blasters do better on tracking speed.
Just remember also, drones are your friends, and there is nothing wrong with using a Dominix for missions. "War is not measured in terms of who wins or loses, who is right or wrong.-á It is measured in terms of who survives." |

Blasters have no range. You'll be chasing little l3 rats around the grid with slowboat... |

Maybe Med Rails could do ok in lvl 3 missions, but large guns of either type won't do horribly well against level 3s. If you want to do lvl 3s in a Gal BS, get a Domi. Otherwise, a Myrm will do better. |

He can actually do lvl 3s well on a Megathron if he's got good gunnery and drone skills. However you'll be spending a lot of time burning to the accel gates on a Mega. This is why the Myrmidon is the better choice. |

The reason why I'm wanting a BS anyway is because I regularly go into L4-L5 with some RL friends. I myself haven't gotten that far, can only do L2's (L3's soon).
I have decent drone skills I think. It's up above 500,000 skill points, one of my highest; I'm just a few hours away from ogres.
And even though its ugly ( ) I'm liking the Dominix. It fits a lot better with my current skill set, and the already given advice. (Thanks!)
So for now I'll stick with my Vexor. |

If you had more SPs, like, at least 15M SP or something, focused on armor tanking and gunnery, I would have told you :
Go ahead with your Megathron, but put a MWD on it (I know some missions don't allow it but hey, a lot of them do now) and a webifier.
If you're fighting Serpentis or even better, Bloodraiders, you'll do wonders. A Megathron is a hard hitter with a ridiculous range.
Or else, you can still use it with 350mm Railguns. I heard about peoples running missions with a 425mm T2 Rokh so hey, with the tracking bonus, I think you can deal with lvl 3s light speed.
Don't forget to fit a propulsion module though |

Fit highest medium rails for your L3s, then refit large rails when you're helping your friends in L4s.
Blasters on a big slow ship in PvE are just frustrating, it's too slow to yomp around after the NPCs.

As everyone else has said, there are ships that work better for lvl3s.
You can use a BS for 3s, but you have to work pretty hard.
You could get-away-with large rails if you fly it right. (Fly away from the rats and let them chase you.) I would fit a Tracking Computer, and a Tracking Enchancer (or 2) for sure. Fit an AB for sure.
You could also use Medium Rails. (More tracking with less dmg and range.)
The rats in lvl3s aren't TOO spread-out, so you could even get-away with Blasters. With 2 TCs with optimal range scripts and a TE (or 2), you should have pretty decent range. ^^^Hmm... interesting concept. I might have to try that-out.
Most importantly, your drones will be doing a lot of your damage. Train for T2 lights, they are the bomb! (and will be your #1 life-savers when you do l4s solo) Ogres are OK in some situations, but take forever to get to the target, so they suck when the rats are far away.
You have lots of options. Try some stuff-out and see what works. By using a BS you should have plety of tank, so no worries there. Have fun! |

Neither really, a Mega is going to be to slow between gates, and its guns have a hell of a time with frigates that are the bulk of the targets. So you load up with drones and end up flying it like a ghetto domi that can plink off a couple on the way in.
If you much use a BS (gross overkill) for level 3s use the Domi, single repper dual omni with a rack of 350mm rails.
...and not the hull sucks until have T2 heavies.....they should be a pre-req. |

Ogre IIs track well enough with a couple omni's to basically two shot spider drones
Even without the omnis I usually have a few ogres in the hold just in case, they generaly take down tacklers faster once they are in your grill, and you don't loose much because 1 ogre = 5 lights so for say a Hyperion, or Maelstrom that has a 100m3 bay, you carry three heavier and 5 lights to flavor.
That way you get an actual DPS assist for BS, 5 lights for frig swarms and can fly like 2 heavies and 3 lights for tackers i.e. Mordus Bounty Hunters and Gistti Vipers, at least that is what I have found. |

Pretty sure you mis-understood me. I'm not talking about using Ogres with a Dominix or Myrmidon that have omnis fit. I'm talking about using them with a Gunboat. When I'm missioning in my Hyperion, I carry 5 T2 lights to take-out the interceptors that get too close before I can shoot them. I don't trust my heavies for use against frigs especially without an omni. That leaves me room for 3 heavies, which I use (with 2 of the lights) to augment my guns' damage vs BSs.
I was making sure the OP knew that for L2s and 3s, lights (especially T2) would be more usefull than heavies if he's using a gun-boat.
I think we're on the same page, as you recommended the same drone load-out as I do. |

Not if you have drone sharpshooting IV or V I still generally carry ogres.
On the Mael or Hype I'll usually carry 3 heavies, and 5 lights, the heavies are almost always ogres. That is also what I'm saying two or three ogre II and a the rest lights takes down the frigates faster.
I'm basically only carrying a full flight of lights as spares, I rarely send out all 5.
Of course I don't recall even using heavy drones in level 2 or 3, so you may well be right that you can get buy with Hobgoblins and or Warriors, the frigates just kind of explode anyway....which would also be another reason to just take a myrm, its going to have a better tank overall with dual reppers and an after burner and is generally going to go faster than a big slow ass battleship through lower level missions.
I know when I'm standing grinding I'm usually in one of my Myrms, and I can fly all of the Matari and Gallente BSs

Hmmm... I don't think I have Drone Sharpshooting to 4. It's definately worth checking-out. I also don't have skills for T2 heavies yet. (It's actually in the que right now) I've spent all my time training my gunnery skills.
I will have to give this a shot and see, thanks for the tip. |

For level 3 missions, I'd suggest Dual 250mm or 350mm rails, as the largest thing you'll come across is BC's so the extra tracking is essential, as is at least 1 Tracking Computer in the mid and a full flight of Scout drones.
For level 4's I love 425mm and a tracking comp, just feels right |

For a Battleship in a level 3 Mission I would suggest a less intensive tank 1 Active Hardener of Each and 1 Omni if needed.
Then Fit an MWD on it. You'll have less tank but more speed which is perfect for level 3's.
The 2 Play Styles that I've ran into on level 3 and 4 missions is Getting up Close and Personal or keeping your distance.
The Dominix is Pro for Missions mostly because of the Drones. The Megathron might be more fun if you're able to fit an MWD on it.
The Ship that I used for level 4 Missions was the Navy Apoc. (Amarr) and It was a decent tank with decent damage and an MWD. It went 770 M/S and could get in close and keep the distance I wanted on the Cruisers, Battle Cruisers and Battleships. The only problem I had was sometimes the frigates, Mostly I sent my drones to take care of them. My Guns Caught them sometimes before they got too close and too fast and just blew them away. I used Pulse (Blasters) instead of Beam (Rails).
Basically Chose your play style and fly with it. ^_^ |
