I've seen a post somewhere about an EVE model viewer that can open the tri files and show us the ship models. Where I can I download this?

This is against the EULA, so don't expect any posts here.

Why is it against the EULA? Well, they most likley have a reason but i'd like to know it.

I know it's againt the EULA, but, god, I'd love to have some sort of interactive viewer to be able to get a peek of all the ships. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to drool over that interceptor/dread/titan/npc ship that we're not quite ready to pilot yet, but oh-so want to drool over.

CCP should incorporate a model viewer with the EVE client.
They should also have a stand alone version (with embeded ship models) that ppl interested in the game can download from this site and other MMO sites. ------------------------------------------------ Current Hobby other than EVE |

It's covered under the 'Reverse Engineering' bit.

The most annoying part is that some people (I'm admitting nothing) have written perfectly good tools to do this, but are not willing to take the risk of releasing them.
If you want a render of a ship it *may* be possible to supply them on request, I'd have to check.
I have been informed that any work I care to produce (if correctly credited) will not get me banned from the game - but the forum mods may take a dim view of it being posted, or not.
It is a frustrating situation, but so far I haven't actually got in trouble for posting those works on the forums.
Let me make it clear again though, I am not in a position to release any tools I may have to view or extract models or textures from the game, so don't ask me for them. ______________________________________________

I had a similar problem with Nexus: The jupiter incident. I wrote a DAT extracter (DATs are the equivalent of .stuff files in eve) for it which instantly got deleted from the forums and I received an email from their community support person.
The tool you created is against the EULA, blah blah blah.
Anyway after a little bit of pressure from the community they changed their view on it, and allowed me to release it. Since then it has allowed people to create single player mods for the game that wouldn't have been possible otherwise.
I hope CCP relises we're not trying to steal the models and textures and make millions from them, just that we want to make fan art and movies for the enjoyment of the community.

As long as the model viewer does not support export, I'm all for it. Maybe CCP should ask for submissions for viewers, then go over them to see if they are kosher before allowing release of it? ---

We already have a .stuff extracter. I for example used it to get the EVE music into my iPod. What would be nice, however, would be a simple model viewer, where you can take a good, hard look at the ship your are thinking about training for/buying, or if you simply want to gaze longingly at the haunting form of the Thorax ---

It's like a lot of other things though. I had to cease development of my market export tool because it was a grey area, mods warned me against it but no real word from the devs.
It appears that the EULA is designed to prevent people modifying the client. I know for certain that one person got a hefty ban for modifying the python code behind Eve.
But extracting data from game files, plenty of people (JIDE, EVE-I, STUFF exrtactor, EVE-DB) have *****ed the file structure and still seem to be playing the game.
The tools do exist, some people may give you guidance if you ask politely and privately, but it seems a bit of an honour amongst thieves sort of thing. Plus people have spent hours themselves working out how the files are structured, and do not want other people pinching their hard work.

And this is something that's confusing me. CCP haven't tried to ban the .stuff extracter, and that does go against their EULA. The only possible use that program has is for getting to the files inside it, and the files that are inside are the models, textures, sounds, music, etc...
