Just a curious thought that occured to me today. Do any of the CCP guys actively RP on their play accounts?
There are some great threads on these boards sometimes on the state of RP, or just RP in general - I was wondering if they are read from an academic standpoint or from a visceral "I know exactly what you're talking about" point of view.
EVE has always struck me as light on the RPG side of MMORPG, despite having one of the most interesting and detailed backstories I've ever seen. Is it maybe because there is no one on the Dev team with a vested, personal interest in RP playstyle? Or is it something else?

Pretty hard to roleplay in space because you cannot see each other character. Plus you're in a gooey pod.
And under your mountains of mountain dew cans XD.

Human interaction? Its pretty hard to RP when you cant talk about your movements and so on.
All you can do is talk.

Roleplaying a char isn't all about performing actions and emotes. Its about a personality and playstyle, why cant some one roleplay a ruthless pirate or a pirate with a kind heart? Its about actions more than movements which is perfectly easy to put accross using what we have in game.

It says MMORPG on the top of my browser when I hit the main page. I've seen the terms used interchangably myself, I'm not sure what would make one "officially" one or the other.

indeed... I don't see how being able to see my (beautifull) corpse would authorize me a "better" roleplay? I guess it limits the visual faces expressions of course, but not that much than in any "classical" rpg (pen'n'paper)... roleplaying isn't about being able to bow in front of someone or doing some funky fantasy dance ;)

This has deviated from your original questions about the devs (which I obviously can't answer not being a dev). With regard to the role-playing issue, there are those who are heavy role players, you just have to find their channels in-game.
In general though, yes, I agree there isn't much of it in day-to-day operations out in the field mining, running missions and such. You have to go looking for it, it rarely comes looking for you.
As for the grounds that best facilitate role playing (whether your in person as an avatar or in a pod) it's only limited by the imagination (or lack thereof) of the player in question.
In short, ask around and see if you can't find a channel or two that can better satiate your need to roleplay in-game.

Unlike persistant worlds in games like Neverwinter Nights, the vast majority of Eve players regularly break the "suspension of disbelief" that is required to actually roleplay. If you've ever seen people reply to a GM roleplaying a pirate, Amarr slaver, Minmatar freedom fighter, or Gallente merchant in local, you'd realize that it's an uphill battle trying to get any semblance of RP here. One person or small corp roleplaying by themselves when everybody else is yelling LOL PWND and talking about their favorite pokemon makes for a crappy RP experience.

Historically true, to the best of my knowledge. It was changed more recently on the main page of Eve, possibly because people expect every MMOG to be called a MMORPG now.
I don't personally roleplay ingame, and never have in a MMOG because I dislike trying to roleplay around people who aren't interested in it, which almost inevitably happens at some point. I have a lot of respect for people who can enjoy roleplaying despite those problems though [;)].
There are devs who used to roleplay on their main accounts, but I don't know if they still do or not.

No, they just speak a strange language. We have a roleplay alliance of over 300 people (in fact it might be around 400 now), and we fight other roleplayers (CVA et al and pals) and we attack people who buy and sell slaves and have no conception of Roleplay, but you'd be surprised how many do. Everyone in EVE roleplays, not many of them realise it.
As for dev's roleplaying... hehe, lets have some guesses at what you think they all would roleplay if they did eh? :) -

Actually it's great fun replying to crap like that with "What is this Pokemon of which you speak, is it the latest craze on Caldari planets?"
And then when they insult you for taking roleplaying too seriously, the fun really starts...

I just happen to have an original Eve CD in my hand (sad huh? especially at work!) and it says
Quote: A MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER ONLINE GAME
Bold is as appears.
In reply to Rodj's comment, I tent to RP around RP'rs, simply because I enjoy it. However, I can also fully understand the earlier comment about the frustration of trying to RP around people who aren't interested in it.
As to character motivation though, I play Avon to the character I envisioned for him, although I may not always be 'in character'. Not sure if that makes much sense to some, but I am sure others will know what I am getting at. ______________________________________________

If some one talks to me out of character I will reply out of character but if they approach me acting as a character then I find it only polite to reply as such rather than become one of those spoiling it for others talking about pokemon. At some point or other in every game every one has roleplayed to some extent. You might not realise it or it might not have been intended but I can safely say thats true. But to go over another point if people are talking about real world stuff I don't even think that breaks the roleplay really, they are just discussing something you dont understand, if you follow me? Meh I am rambling now but I think I know what I mean... I think.

Personally, i think eve is RPG lite cause people cant pretend they are elves.

Other then that, i think there is more RP'n then you think. Just because someone doesnt talk weird doesnt mean they dont RP. Every CEO is RP'n a CEO right? Your RP'n a starship captain stuck in a pod just by playing the game.
I dont know many CEOs or starship captains in RL.
You can have a very narrow view of RP'n and say eve has very little of it because few care about talking about RL in-game, or you can have a very broad view of RP'n and think that most people RP weither they know it or not. _______________________________________________

EVE is RPG lite because even RPers need money. In WoW, you can be a cheap, broke Night-Elf priest that curses orcs all day.
Also, there's the question of different types of roleplay. I roleplay all the time in EVE. In fact, I probably roleplay every single minute I'm online. I play the role of Raem Civrie, a member of a particularly immoral and evil group. Every now and then, I roleplay as Raem Civrie, a Caldari citizen that just plain dislikes the Minmatar. Very occasionally, I roleplay as Raem Civrie, loan shark and traveling trader. ---

Edited by: Rod Blaine on 03/11/2005 19:26:26 Well there's little of the
*shakes head in disgust at the slaver with his 'property' and turns his back to walk out the door decisively*
or
*prepares a dish of fried fish with taters for Raem to welcome him home from his loan shark buisiness*
-type of RP going on in Eve.
People tend to adapt their RP to what fits in the environment, and emotes don't fit that well in Eve really, at least not the very descriptive ones you see in alot of medieval-fantasy type games.
However, I roleplay a person in this game every day. Most of what I post is definately ooc, but some is tiled to the IC level, and alot of nearly all of my ingame actions can be construed as roleplay or not according to how one would want to see it.
You dont need to be an escaped slace or ruthless buisinessman to roleplay in Eve. Being a corporate fighterpilot as some type of light roleplay can be enough without breaking the immersion when you meet a 'real' roleplayer.
You can just as well model your roleplay angle on player constructed storylines as CCP-privided ones. If you counjt both equal, we are indeed all roleplayers to some extent in Eve, which is pretty unique and could well make eve very RP heavy when seen in that light. _______________________________________________

This exact question came up a long time ago. My personal opinion is that I am always roleplaying ingame, because I roleplay myself.
It's a sci-fi world, it has toasters which burn your toast, you need to get a new beer now and then and you also have to go to the toilet.
Surely, you can take it even further and be a loyalist or radical showing allegiance to a certain faction and as a result hate all X by nature and kill all Y by nature because this is the setting, rules and values you as a person decide to abide to.
Thus, I believe you are always roleplaying in EVE simply because the setting allows it. You don't have to be on TS and modify your voice, like the 11 year old RP'ing a huge orc and he hasn't even hit puberty yet would have to to "hardore" RP his person (I'm still laughing).
In my case, I decided I wanted my own empire and if anything, wanted to get rid of the Empires. I therefore had no problem RP'ing (killing) with empire loyalist or working with anti-empire corporations or alliances, cause it was simply natural - no voice modification required

Edited by: Snake Jankins on 04/11/2005 01:35:59 I'm not role playing in the sense of an actor. After logging I'm in the EVE universe and I forget everything else and then I'm living my life in this totally different world with new possibilities, different rules, different moral, different enemies and friends and different goals.
And if I have enough of it I log out and I'm back in RL.
So guess it's not roleplay, more about me being a pilot in another universe/environment with it's own story and adapting to different physical, social, economical laws. A world where making millions and blowing up stuff for millions is daily life. Adapting to that and playing in this environment is fun. And if it's not fun, you can always log out.
So the thing I like most is not that's it a RPG, but the virtual world aspect and that only because EVE is extremly player driven. A few years you could only imagine how life would be in a world like EVE, now you can try it out and (almost ) without consequences. And that's really cool.

There are Roleplay possibilities here but there isn't as big a following of RPers as you see in games such as WoW and other games of that type, not that RPers can even agree what roleplaying is (Everquest had some of the more hyper types discussing just that).

I don't know about other people and I'm not a dev (just an ISD volunteer) but personally, I role play myself as a starship captain. In fact, in any MMO I tend to roleplay myself in the context of the game. I think that's the best way to do it because you don't get bogged down in technical details and things just come naturally. Any reaction you have is valid. Say I'm in-game and I'm organising a deal with someone, that's me roleplaying myself as a trader. If I decide to go out and NPC for a bit, that's my playing a starship pilot that likes to go out and NPC for a bit. There's not much immersion to speak of in games like eve.
Although I do play Everquest 2 and I made up a bunch of background for my character, it's still me roleplaying myself if I were a catgirl wizard (sexeh :o ) in Norrath. If I woke up tomorrow in a pod in a velator or an ibis or whatever, I'd probably react just the same as I do when playing eve. .. What? I can dream, can't I? .

Hehe, nice Oveur.
Basically, if by roleplaying you increase your enjoyment of the game, then its cool. Roleplaying is not throwing d20's around and pretending to be lord galthazar of the infernal realms (well, ok, maybe its that too), for me, it's just getting involved in the story line, because it gives me a reason to fight beside Yarr im bored.
It's alot of fun too. Specially when people ask why they just got blown up.
"What, there just in game items, why the hell would you kill me for buying that? Piwate!"
So, think twice before buying slaves you naughty naughty people!
I never tried roleplaying or anything like it really before i played EVE, I had the flu one week, so i thought id try an online game, read the EVE background stuff while i was bored waiting for it to download, and i thought, i wouldnt mind having a bit of fun with that.
Got in game, kicked about for a few weeks, then saw some posts on teh summit, talked to Maggot. And here I am, crazy beer drinking (we all played drunk, yar!), womanising (hell, its a game, i can make believe if i want! ) Slaver killing (pvp with a good reason) freedom fighter.
Its alotta fun too. We dont roleplay on our internal channels (there's a channel called The Summit that u can btw) cos that gets wierd, but i made alotta friends and have a lot of fun with this game.
Bloody hell, that went on a bit longer than expected.

Like someone said on mmorpg.com, "Roleplay in this game is primarrilly OOC" wich I think is a quite good description. Even though people are hanging around in the Minmatar channel talking about the last episode of CSI:NY you may still hear some bashing of the Amarrians. Some people don't sell things to players of a special race, corp or standing. So a lot of people roleplay even if they're not doing it through emotes. *Explains in a fatherly way*

Really interesting replies - thanks all, not at all what I expected.
Seems the line is drawn at total immersion in EVE rather than at "playing a character". I wouldn't have expected a concensus at that.
(Thanks to those providing advice, but fwiw I've been involved with the roleplay community in EVE for a year or so now. I was just idly wondering if the Devs chose to or not)

Oh Gods, I actually agree with an Amarrian about something *spit*
It's not about powergaming, or choosing the current flavour of the month ship to fly. I roleplayed everything from day one, my starting corp, traits, skills, attributes, all were designed with a character in mind and had nothing to do with getting the best starting layout. I decided from day one with the intention of never flying anything but Matari ships, and I've stuck to that role through nerf and boost.

As for roleplaying, being a stereotype is so cliche. Be whoever you want to be. I think I roleplay, but I play as ME, and behave how I would behave in the gameworld. There's no reason to force a role on yourself imo, because so many "professions" are covered in this game, you can do nearly anything you want. In hack and slash MMOs of today you're always forced, no matter what, to be a monster killer as part of your role. Eve has none of that, only thing you're forced to play is as a pod pilot

There is one small sentence regarding WoW in the whole thread. Overreacting a bit aren't we?
I tend to see things the same way as quite a few others, that we are role playing by playing the game. Earlier tonight I was asked to 1v1 a hostile then friendlies would jump in and smoke him. I refused, reason being I don't like betraying trust like that.
To me, this is the character that I am. Roleplaying by acting myself.

I like to RP in EVE, all I have to do is pretend it is real.
I mean I know it is not real but the story is pretty good IMO. So I go with it.
I mostly act in game like I would if it were all real.
sometimes I have to resort to not RPing if I am trying to relay something in RL that has to do with playing the game.

Argh, I can't watch an orc do the Hammer dance or see some female (anything) do a 'sexy dance', or kneel and make it look like... nevermind. How can one RP without such vital things?
Oh, I know how, it's called knowing how to roleplay well.
I RP in EVE alot, so do many others. If you need to see the icon of the character instead of their ship, EVE isn't the RP place for you.
Oh, and almost all the RP I've seen on WoW is a joke, so don't give me any BS about WoW having good rp servers, because that's bull****. ------------------------------------ Your Civilian Gatling Railgun perfectly strikes Choke Slam [CAIN], wrecking for 6.0 damage. |
