Thanks to Dark Shikari for this topic. Im in desperate need of a good read and prefer a series more than a singular book. Im open minded about the type of book always willing to try something new. So please help.
Ill start the ball rolling:
The chronicles of Thomas Covenant the unbeliever by Stephen Donaldson

For science fiction, my list of The Five Best Series Ever (no particular order):
Xeelee Sequence, Stephen Baxter: Hard scifi at its best. Incredibly creative, and vastly epic. See Vacuum Diagrams, Flux, Timelike Infinity, etc. There's about 5 or 6 books, plus a huge number of short stories (summed up in Vacuum Diagrams). The ideas presented here are huge.
Foundation Series, Isaac Asimov: One of, if not the most famous series ever made. Ties in with his earlier robot novels (though 20,000 years later) and tells an epic story of galactic civilization. Including the 3 authorized posthumous sequels by Brin, Benford, and Bear, it sums up 11 books.
Uplift Trilogies, David Brin: Hard scifi, again at its best. Great ideas, epic story, with good characterization and the like. It can't really be explained--go read the darn thing. 6 books in total.
Ringworld, Larry Niven: I'm putting this seperate from the Known Space series, as it is very different. An epic story about a ringworld 600 million miles in circumfrence, 1 million miles wide, with trillions of inhabitants... and the mystery behind its construction. Four books in total.
"Known Space series," various authors: Created by Larry Niven, and continued by countless others (including Benford and other famous authors) in the long-running Man-Kzin Wars series, and containing stories ranging from a few pages to a book long, and countless characters and stories of triumph and defeat, this is also one of my favorites. Utterly impossible to put down. - Proud member of the [23].

Still on the subject of space, the Ender Saga by Orson Scott Card is well worth a read -
Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide and Children of the Mind.

I personally would say that the Ender series is very overrated. Ender's Game in particular is really not that great, but everyone for some reason loves it. The later ones are a lot more sophisticated, and are IMO a lot better and worth a read, but not nearly the best there is. Maybe its just because I constantly run into people who think they know science fiction, and say "Oh I've read Card, Ender's Game is my favorite book, blah blah blah blah." - Proud member of the [23].

If you havent read it i would give Greg Egans Diaspora a read. It is particulary impressive where the characters finish up at the end of the book. A very good read, not a series just a damn good read.

I would suggest the vampire series: 'interview with a vampire' etc
and for a light read: 'A hitchhikers guide to the galaxy' by Adams. All 5 books. It's nothing personal. It's just galactic domination.

Gunslinger Series by Stephen King is definately worth the read.
Alien Trilogy is pretty solid as well, written by S. Perry (if you're into that, nothing like earth getting owned. Earth Hive is book one.)

Otherworld series by Tad Williams
Loved it, read them all back to back for a month or so, 4 books in total.
I don't know how to describe them, a mix of sci-fi and fantasy set in the near future.

I liked them until about halfway through the last book. He killed the story with a lame ending :(
I forgot to mention the Mars Trilogy too, brilliant.

Well, yes on the overrated. The other parts just vice versa. Ender's Game is one of the best SF ever written, the others just sprang up on the band wagon, not bad, but not outstanding either.
I'd like to add 3 series:
David Weber's Honor Harrington books (I think 11 already). The plot reminds me very much on EVE and the books are simply adventurous star wars, however with great ideas, great plots and written quite immersively.
Brian Aldiss' Helliconia trilogie. I'll never forget those (read it approx 20 years ago). It's social SF, describing the alien life of very humanly knitted aliens in a very alien world.
Dan Simmons Hyperion series (4 Books). Undescribable. Lot's of romance, lots of tech babble, lots of politics, lots of gore.
Ah, well, and Frank Herbert's Dune books are not bad either, however I haven't read all the other Dune books not written by him yet...

I agree.. This is one hell of a series - when the new ones come out I read them in a day, and have to wait a year for the next!!
Also I would recommend the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley (including the Vampire World follow on series), for a unique slant on the whole Vampire mythology... but then with a name like mine, I would..

Ok here's some of my fav's.
Song of Ice and Fire Series by George R.R. Martin (First book is A Game of Thrones) arguably the best fantasy series ever written.
The Black Company by Glen Cook. Tired of the same old Epic Hero vs Hellish villain of fantasy? How about a black hearted group of mercenaries... and they are the 'good guys'. Awesome book that turned into a decent series.
Getting tired of sci-fi and fantasy try any of these Authours series.
Jack Higgins: Eye of the Storm, first book with the protaganist Sean Dillon, excellent British spy books.
John Sanford's Prey novels. These are actually written by a Pulitzer winner, Sanford is a pseudonym.
Lee Child's Jack Reacher novel's. Great books about an ex military MP loner.
Stuart Wood's Stone Barrington novels, good mysteries with just the right comedic elements.
If you want more lemme know, I read a couple books a week and used to own a bookstore, so I have lots to recommend. lol.

Best book series EVER! has to be Jeen Aual`s earth series books. Not exactly a series but more like one long and wicked story spread out over 5 books. If you like historic/fantasy then its defo the book for you.

Edited by: Mary Makepeace on 04/11/2005 00:55:01 Diaspora by Greg Egan really does rock, a damn fine hard scifi read.
for Space opera, David Brins Uplift series. the second book "Startide Rising" won both the hugo and nebula awards.
Peter F. Hamiltons "Nights Dawn Trilogy" and the colection of short stories in the same universe "Second Chance at eden" are very good. (although i was disapionted with the end)
Iain M. Bank's culture series is a fine read, my 'perfect' utopia, and books two and three, "the use of weopons" and the "the player of games" respecively are two individually excellent reads in their own right. (oh and you have to love the ship names) [decomissioned Rapid Offencive Unit (dROU) "Frank Exchange Of Views" (Psychopath Class)]
David Weber's Honour Harrington series is what i call bubblegum books, a sweetness that gets chewed up and spat out.
Richard Morgan is a new guy on the scene and his Kovacs books starting with "Altered Carbon" are very good indead. sex and violence along with thought provoking characterization. amazing stuff.
Vernor Vinge did some very good writing with "a deepness in the sky" and "a fire apon the deep".
for a classic sf read, Fredrick Pohl's Heechee saga is not bad, the best of whih is Book one "GatewaY"
Post appocalyptic future. Patrick Tilley is the writer of "the amtrak wars" (6 books) and for machievelian double dealing, i swear i have read no better.
Fantasy Grr Martins song of ice and fire series is great but unfinished, he took five years to get book 4.5 out so, don't hold your breath for this one.
Greg Keyes, "the waterborn" and "the black god" comprise a series of two, great reads. his Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone series is also coming along nicely.
Pick up a copy of China Meivilles "Perdito Street Station", just do it, you wont regret it.
i'll put isn a good word for Jeff Noon "Vurt", which was said to be "too beautifull for bikers , too harsh for hippies" a modern phillip k. ****.
i have to admit i don't like Donaldson, but i have heard very good things about his Gap series.

The GAP series is Space Opera at its finest massive sweeping conflicts, over the top characters. a good read, though in typical donaldson fashion the characters all have to be dark and tortured. Try naming an alt in eve after a gap series character you will be hard pressed to find one trust me.
As for the guy who owned his own bookstore that would be so cool. Where you anything like bernard black (Dylan Moran) from black books :))
Thanks guys for all these suggestions I'AM writing all these down - If you have them keep em coming. I hate not having anything to read, its like when your music collection gets stagnant and your tired of hearing the same old stuff over and over, yet you dont know where to look for something new. Well apparently you ask in an eve forum :)
