Try the Mars Trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars) by Kim Stanley Robinson. A very nice near-future hard sci-fi look at colonizing and terraforming Mars, stretched out over a few hundred years.

Dune series By frank herbert (and later kevin j anderson/brian herbert)
Start with the butlerian jihad (although pick up the original self title for the encyclopedia in the back) and work your way up. The series has won many awards and has had a few movies made of it, of course the movies failed in comparison.
Best sci-fi i've picked up. ------FD------

I have read the dune series, they were very good. The movie was also pretty good 'the olde one' where Patrick Stewart still didnt have hair. I have to say, and apologise to all the Banks fans out there. But i really dont like him every single one of his sentences are like 5 lines long. Punctuation man use it!!! i feel out of breathe trying to read it. My english teacher always told us if you cant read a sentence out loud without pausing for breathe, then its wrong. During an M. Banks sentence i had to go for a wee nap. Controversial - maybe, is it just me - maybe.
Thanks though for all the book ideas everyone knows what to get me for christmas now. :)

Song of Ice and Fire Series by George R.R. Martin (First book is A Game of Thrones) arguably the best fantasy series ever written.
The Black Company by Glen Cook. Tired of the same old Epic Hero vs Hellish villain of fantasy? How about a black hearted group of mercenaries... and they are the 'good guys'. Awesome book that turned into a decent series.
If you want more lemme know, I read a couple books a week and used to own a bookstore, so I have lots to recommend. lol.
Both excellent series. I haven't read the others you suggested but these two are amazing.

Edited by: Zeeawk on 07/11/2005 20:46:09 Anything by Robert Heinlien, in ANY of his series. They are almost all related somehow.
For fantasy check out Piers Anthony's Xanth Series.
EDIT: And of course the Dark Tower series by Stephen King, including the related books The Stand, The Black House, Salem's Lot, and others.

Janny Wurts Mistwraith series are pretty decent as are the books by Raymond E Feist, David Eddings Belgiariad, Mallorean, Eleium and Tamuli series I also like for quick reads though they aren't exactly taxing on the brain. Terry Pratchetts Discworld series of/c, JV Jones as afew nice reads and then there is Mr Robert Jordans wheel of time series and there is also L.E. Modesitt Jr who has a nice variety of books and series in both Fantasy and sci-fi genres.
