I'm new to Eve, and new to pvp so this may be a silly question, but what do people think is appropriate etiquette around pvp?
An example, a corp mate and I were rat hunting in 0.4 space in cruisers. We both have less than a million sp each.....
A BS warped in. We jumped to another asteroid belt. The BS warped in again and vaped my corp mate in about four seconds (I ran). The pilot had been active in Eve for more than a year, was in a two player corporation based in the same system as our corporation, had positive security standing and was rigged out for pvp (with warp scramblers etc).
So, this isn't a whine question, we were in losec, we were probably a bit blase about it, nothing happened that was against any rules etc.
Should we have expected this, from anybody, just because "they could"?

Edited by: Vzae on 03/11/2005 16:18:19 Players can only attack you when you are in 0.4 and lower with little to none retaliation from Concord. So they basically can attack you for the fun of it or recognition. My advice is to stick in higher system or learn to watch the Local chat channel for player pirates and avoid them.

In short -yes.
There is always a potential threat in low security systems. Although you are relativly safe, things like this can happen. Just add him to your address book, adjust your corp standings and keep an eye out in local for anyone with low security ratings.

In pvp anything goes. There are a few things most people look down on. 1. Logging off to avoid combat (it's ok to try to avoid combat, just use ingame means). 2. Smack talking. 3. Warp Core Stabilizers in combat setups (ok for traveling).

Thanks for the replies. Like I said I have no problem with what happened, just am a little surprised that it did happen. If they had been a pirate it would have made sense, if they had been spawning rats it would have made sense (in a BS in 0.4??), if they had a grudge with our corp (they didn't) it would have made sense etc.
Just seems that they did it simply because they could, and that seems strange to me in a game like Eve where you can never be sure of the repurcussions.....
Thanks,
Z
PS. We did check ship and pod kills in the previous hour (none) and we kept an eye on local - nothing....

Aye you have to respect the REAL pirates which have -2.5 standings and the little one -0.1 to -2.4 cause they wear colors.

There is a lot of etiquette in PvP. You don't have to follow it, but you will be branded as dishonorable or lame if you don't:
1) Don't log off to escape. Either don't engage (go to safespot, log off, or leave system) or fight. Warping off is fine--but logging off to save your pod, for example, is considered lame. 2) Don't smacktalk. 3) Warp Core Stabilizers are fine, even in combat ships, but those who are so pansy as to cover their ship with them (i.e. 5+) are generally derided as cowards.

-5 is the cutoff, not -2.5. - Proud member of the [23].

Depends if your view of PVP is limited to being ganked by BS or actual dog fighting and hit and run tactics... Those slot are sacrificed for warp stabilizers...

And whats wrong with WCS in dogfights? You're sacrificing a good slot for something that uses loads of CPU and is useless except for running.
Its penalty enough that it generally gimps your setup. With WCS, you can't have a gank setup or a tank setup. - Proud member of the [23].

5 is a bit excessive...
But besides tackling / disrupting there is little I can do anywho so the whole PVP aspect of the game is a bit off for me until I can secure enough money to equipe an insure a few ships...

Funny there is more then those two setup even if ppl don't use them... I see no fun in gank or tank, overspecialised for single goaled ops.
But so off topic sorry dude!!
