If your tattoo artist told you to put vaseline on it he/she should be smacked, the better thing to use is a Bacitracin Zinc Ointment, Vaseline is nothing more than petrolium jelly that blocks up your pores, and will pull out some coloring, and may lead to a rash, and if it scabs over..it's never really the same. From here on out (if you get more that is) use A+D Ointment, it's an anitbiotic that will speed up healing, protect from infection/rash you may get.
