Every major empire in the world has fallen for one reason--they let their pride get in the way of making wise decisions. In every case, those empires failed to let go of the holdings they were both unable to utilize fully or properly protect from incursion from outside forces. Each and every one fell while their resources were stretched too thin thus putting their entire empire at risk.
