Every game that's been dumbed down and made easier and safer for those vocal players who want to be able to do everything by themsleves has died a slow death.
Every game that's sacrificed it's original design intentions to appease the masses, catering to what they thing might bring in the most cash, regardless how fun it would actually make the game has gone downhill.
Take Asherons Call 2 for instance. Great graphics, interesting combat system, but they geared the game towards everyone being able to do everything, result, people are dead bored, and the most populated server has about 300 players on it, and they're merging the servers to try and recover player base.
Take star wars galaxies, they tried to make a game where everyone was on the same level as everyone else, you know, so it was fair. Games like that have no goals, and while it might appease those people who happen to whine when they don't get their way, it doesn't give anything back to the other players, who might enjoy a challenge, or the chance to have an obstacle that they can't overcome.
For me that's what I like about eve. I've died to pirate blockades. I've died to pirates. I've fought pirates. I've killed pirates. I was transporting a few thousand megacyte in my moa and got attacked by pirates (I won that fight, it was only some guy in m3g4 or t3h r0n1n or something). I lost 3 prototype 250mm gauss guns to lucifer, and there's no way I'm going to quit because of it.
That's what this game was about. You know if there wasn't the pirates, and the corrupt mega corps, and the freelancing bounty hunters, and all that other stuff, this game would be one hell of a boring mining simulation. In fact, I could probably write an online mining simulation which was much more fun than this by myself in an afternoon. Give me a month and it would be an awesome mining/trading/production game. But guess what, without some action, a game like that would be boring as hell.
But that's just my opinion.
But in my opinion, if they dumb down the game, to the point where i never get into conflicts with pirates, and I never can do anything underhanded if someone ticks me off, where everything is handed to me on a silver platter, it's ME that's going to be walking away from this game.
And I'm the kind of player who's pretty damn resiliant. I don't mind most of these balance changes. If you're the whiny kind of player, you'll "quit" because you stubbed your toe. And in reality, if those types of players quit, it's no big deal, because they're impossible to please, and would quit anyways. But if the players who at the moment are enjoying the game, which I would say, despite what you might think, are the majority of those playing, quit, well then, this game will be filled with finicky whiny players who will get bored with no challenges and end up quitting as well, and the game will be dead.
