Today, in Jita, there was what can only be described as an 'incident'. Further information is not forthcoming (yet) from CCP (and probably won't be, which is their right) as their investigation continues into this 'incident'.
As a matter of fact, speculation about said 'incident' has been EXPRESSLY forbidden by CCP with the punishment of being banned from the forums for doing so.
So, I am not going to discuss the 'incident'. What I would like to do is enlighten some of those that play this game to the facts of reality.
The fact of the matter is that EVE, by definition, is UNFAIR.
It is unfair that I cannot do unto others as I have done to me, unless I choose to proceed down a path I do not want to travel. It is unfair that if I CTD during a battle, which happens more times than CCP cares to admit because of the increased demand on the system's resources, that I lose my ship and now due to the new PVP timer, my clone as well. It is unfair that when this occurs, the GMs tell the aggressive people that "Yeah, he was logged in." while at the same time telling me "There is no way to determine the status of someone who dropped connection." Don't get me wrong, that's the game... I play it and when bad things happen I move on.
With all of these things going on and more, such as ORE theft, Gate Sniping (with tanking the Sentries) it surprised me to find those who PAY to play the game think that the DoS attack on CCP today was 'fair' and/or justified.
It was not, in any way, shape or form, FAIR, nor justified. It was not fair to the player base, it was not fair to the developers of EVE, it was not fair to Crowd Control Productions (CCP). And, as a matter of fact, in a lot of places it was illegal as it is considered a computer crime almost worldwide.
You see, as we go through EVE, we all tend to like to lose ourselves in the fantasy of the game. But, the FACT of the matter is that EVE is owned and operated by a 'for-profit' company, CCP. A company out to make MONEY! They were down today for about 5 hours time. For that time they lost (with an est. 10,000 subscribers online, $15/month per subscription, so .50 cents/day equaling about .02/hour per subscriber, * 10,000 subscribers, we get $200 USD/hour * 5 hours = ~$1,000 USD.)
Will we (the players) be getting a reimbursement for play time lost? Will we be getting back any ships lost due to the unnecessary load placed on the system today? I highly doubt it, and I would consider that 'unfair'. But, like the IRS in the United States, I live with it and move on.
Regardless of how you feel the 'incident' started or whether those involved were justified or not in their actions, what was done, clearly shows that not only is EVE UNfair, but LIFE is unfair.
Do the people starving in Africa give a damn about EVE? Probably not. Is it FAIR that they are starving? No. Is it FAIR that the former Soviet Union struggles to recover from what can only be deamed an economic attack? No. Is it FAIR that China is allowed to persecute their citizens for disagreements with the ruling government? No.
Is it FAIR that CCP asked a corporation to change its name? No.
But, it is not the name that makes the corporation, its the people. If my corporation was suddenly associated with something that was not considered palatable by the world population (or the owners of EVE) and I was asked to change it, I would be asking for suggestions on what to change it to, not bellyaching about having to do it. I am sure, my corp members would be more than inclined to do the same.
Very few things in EVE, or LIFE for that matter, are FAIR!
