I apologize if there is a thread about this somewhere but I can't locate the specific information I want. I've played EVE since 2005 and I've accumulated 47 mil SP in PvP skills but I've been away for years. In the past I've done nothing but piracy and some 0.0 small gang PvP (which didn't appeal to me). For me piracy died due to the lack of rewards offered in entering low sec space, I abandoned my pirate ways and entered high sec to do some high sec warfare but unfortunately that also resulted in people just either being logged off or staying docked. That was then, this is now and I have no idea what things are like now.
How is low sec piracy? In the past I would fly 55 jumps and get 2 or 3 kills soloing. Now please don't take this as an opportunity to tell me how uber you are as a pirate and how you've gotten 10 kills in one system before, etc. I could regale you with tales of astounding victories outnumbered and outgunned and tales of resounding defeats. So can anyone please give me the low down of how things are going in the pirate game these days? I'd love to get back to -10 sec status but if things are same old same old then I'd rather just keep my -1.9 and do something else.
Can anyone give me their opinion on how it's going? Is it worth it to sign up with a pirate corp once again and don the skull and crossbones? |

By far the most supported form of piracy (supported by game mechanics that is) is joining highsec mission corps, shooting at them (intracorp violence is CONCORD legal) and demanding ransoms, first to prevent blowing up strategic assets like Orcas, and secondly to leave the corp.
Lowsec doesn't really have targets outside the explorers (who are often in t1 frigates), faction warfare people (again, cheap ships) and newbies.
Jump freighters really took a lot of traffic out of lowsec. AWOXalypse is coming! https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=2898431

Lowsec has targets, but the days of catching missioners in super fancy ships are mostly gone. You'll get one here and there but it's certainly not like it used to be.
As said in the post above me, today your targets are mostly the militia, and explorers. Nice thing about both of these groups is they have more ISK than brains, so you can get some nice drops from there (predominantly) small ships. Miners have (sort of) been making a resurgence, but again small ships with built in +2 warp core strength.
Other then that your primary source of targets will be the other pirates. Hope this helps. |

I was trying to be a righteous low sec pirate too, hating on high sec noob gankers and stuff.. still do as it's become a tradition, but man after spending days and weeks flying around in low sec, finding nothing but docked people and the occasional death by desperate pirate gang, I kinda understand why people may result to killing things in high sec.
There are some explorers now, but as already said, they tend to be in cheap t1 frigs.. however they might carry loot worth hundreds of millions, so it wouldn't necessarily be a wasted effort to go for them. I'll be rolling out a tailored explorer hunter vessel at least. :o |

I wouldn't call it 'piracy' in the sense that you are thinking, but being a neutral in the FW warzone can be quite exiting, but not very profitable if you're not winning consistently. You'll be fighting people who are 100% prepared to fight you, versus killing helpless bears. |

Piracy against FW people can be entertaining, although the harvest is mostly tears, not ISK.

2 Erebus kills over the course of a couple weeks (personally not on them) 51 kills today for me, great fights, eye patch, booze, girlyboi's. Piracy is going JUST fine tyvm.
I suggest you find a Pirate entity that suits your needs. I understand it's frustrating going from corp to corp trying to find a group that melds well. has cohesion, is fun to fly with etc. Such is Eve. Before I joined SC fights were fleeting and inner BS was constant. Just look around.

I've been in piracy since 2004'ish and haven't really stopped. What I can tell you is there are very few of the OG's still around. The game has become riddled with newer style pirate players who care less about the oldschool ways because of how much they have been forced to adapt to the changes.
The direction for piracy has not been a good one over the years. The only way to really stay relevant is to gate camp a high-traffic system to put some coin in your pocket. That requires a decent corp with some numbers to get you going. Other than that, you can roam and find other targets looking to fight. But, it's hard explaining to people that piracy is not about pvp or fair odds. Thus, if you want to pvp, you can. Plenty of targets to fight if you look for them. It's just not piracy then. Ah, 'gf', that most ambiguous of statements.
Does it mean 'good fight'? Or does it mean 'get f$#@ed'? I've always said it meaning the former, but I've definitely seen the latter.
That said, because I don't get attached to my ships in this game (they are disposable tools after all), my favorite fights tend to be the ones I lose narrowly.

Piracy - in the old school sense - is not as prevalent as before. Gate camps are rare, real pirate corps and griefers are few and far between. Although there are a lot of corps that claim to be "pirate", they seem to be groups of pilots that simply have negative security statuses that will shoot anything not blue. Nowadays, the "pirate" corps usually operate on a code of conduct and require prospective members to undergo an intrusive application process and "background check" (though most of these corps also claim that EVE is just a game and shouldn't be taken so seriously -- why do I have to crawl under a microscope like I'm applying to the ******* CIA?). EVE's pirates of old (real pirates) were scammers, thieves, and cutthroats that would do anything to win, would tell you one thing and do another. These true pirate corps are basically nonexistent.
That being said, low sec PvP seems to be at an all-time high, thanks to FW and frigate rebalancing. IMHO, it is now easier than ever to PvP in lowsec, and cheaply! Fit up a frigate and go roaming. You will find an abundance of of other frigates/destroyers/cruisers to shoot at. |

Ok I read through some posts. I find them more amusing than useful (in a good way don't worry) but luckily I've had the chance to fall in with a good pirate corp. I use the phrase 'pirate corp' loosely however because it's more of a PvP corp since most targets we engage are out also looking for PvP. I've always found that piracy is sneaking up on some hapless belt humpers and sticking my Mega Pulse in their thermal exhaust shaft. These days belts (from what I've seen so far) are so abandoned that you could probably Safe Spot in one and nobody would ever find you. Despite all these new developments I will always be an OG Pirate at heart. Long live the skull and crossbones. |

The way I see it for-profit piracy isn't about shooting other criminals for fun and pew pew. I have never been part of this grand era where Warp To 0 and JF's didn't exist, so I've had to define piracy under the 'new' conditions only. While gate traffic is indeed very low, there are other piratical acts one can perform. Stalk POCOs, ransom badly fitted POSes, etc. While it doesn't bring in substainstial ISK I do not require substantial ISK from it, opting instead to enjoy the satisfaction knowing it's someone else's ISK. |

There are still plenty of old school pirates like you describe, they are just mostly based in highsec these days, not lowsec. I've had great fun living in lowsex, but found that what I was doing there was mostly simple PvP against armed opponents. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but opportunities for truly piratical activities in lowsec are few and far between. In highsec you can pirate your heart out all day every day without ever needing to look hard for targets. Join the Revolutionary Front and liberate New Eden from it's stuff.
