Right first off this is mostly a rant please forgive me for it..
I started to play eve back in 2003 at the grand old age of 15 years old.
Over the years it has become more common for people ingame, to basically sterotype anyone under the age of 18, as just "leet" speaking pirates, who moan, disrupt the game, scam, and generally act in stupid ways ingame.
When did sterotyping such a large number of gamers become allowed?
Lets be realistic here if i did this in other forms for example sterotyping all french people as "wimps who always surrender." ( I do not agree with this point of view if was just the first thing to come to my head, I apologize to the french for typing it ). I would expect to be petitioned and gagged and given a warning.
The point of this post is to make you "older" gamers aware that you cannot just paint everyone witht he same brush, It really annoys me seeing ( spelling ), Like this
That is just one example of a now common practice to make a joke out of age and how / what actions we commit ingame.
I understand Sometimes your sterotype can be justifyed but alot of the time it cannot, I know there are people ingame who don't tell people there real age for fear of peoples perception of them changing.
All i ask is the next time you see something stupid try not to imagine a young person sitting there "smalk talking" you.
[/end rant]
If none of this makes sense offends anyone is in the wrong forum, isn't appropiate for the forums,

actually in my experience, the l33t speakers tend to be the older people. And yes there are always exceptions to the rule, however its a generational thing. I missed the whole l33t speak era and still dont get it yet. Its much like shell suits imo, everyone had one at some point, for a few months then got bored and binned it.
saying that, when I play WoW, the sterotype does fit there. Its not only that, its sometimes on TS as well, you get very caffiene high youngsters squeeling with high pitched voices in your ear who still have the misfortune of passing through puberty and sounding like a cross between mickey mouse and darth vader.

Was wondering how you do that thank you.
To hakera, your post reflects the point im trying to put across, admiitly ( spelling ), other games have a young community, eve seems to have a much older one, so please everyone leave the little ones alone.

It does not matter how old you are, only how old you act.
You can be 25 and act 12, or be 15 and act 30.
I generally find that it is far better for one to never say his age, and instead let others assume, rather than tell them you are far younger than they would think. - Proud member of the [23].

No one is suggesting that the older players don't act like idiots. I know plenty of people over 30 who play eve and are living, breathing embodiments of the word "f***wit".
In my experience, it just happens to be the case that those under the age of 20, in general, do it more often. They also, generally, tend to act like idiots on TS and get all exciteable too. I have nothing against young players and agree that they should not be stereotyped. What I have put forward here is an observation.
You can generally tell roughly how old people are from the humour and language they use, which is based on different levels of experience. If you are not sure, try talking about a kids TV show from the early 80s. That will soon shut young people up. --------------------------------------------------

idiots come in all shapes, sizes and colours. the main problem with young players is that most of them are new to the massive multiplayer concept, and take a long time to adjust to the whole new world. Plus many still have to learn that each action has its consenquences. The ones i really feel sorry for are adults that haven't learned that lesson. ----------------------------

I'm almost 21 and a huge jerk in game. No-one stereotypes your age, they take your actions and expect you to be a certain age. I'm 12 apparently.

Mostly adults are looking at their own past and realize that no matter how aware you are of what your doing and why, there always comes a point where you can look back in embarassment over the misdirection of that era. This is mostly caused less by having wrong answers to life's questions, but simply not having come round fully to comprehending the significance of other people and the questions they ask, or not having come across those questions at all.
Every few years this cycle will repeat. It is unusual for a young person, no matter how nice, responsible, mature or energetic to have the diplomatic and language skills be able to tactfully tiptoe around the egos of other individuals, or to recognize a dance number, especially in an environment limited to something as cerebral as text. It's not that they can't succeed, but rather that they have not had enough opportunities in which they have failed.
In a nutshell: Children are self-absorbed monsters. Adults on the otherhand are worried about the fact that you aren't worried about the fact that they are worried about you. Thirdly, philosophers should be trusted with anything.

I'm sorry, but you are VERY wrong.
And nicely written Chrisb. I somehow support you (due to the fact i'm pretty much the same age...)
and I forgot. You think younger players are smacktards? Take a little look at FatBalls...or rather at the whole [AOI.] (apostels of insanity) corporation. smack 4tw ------------------------------------------------------

main issue is many younger players come from Battlenet, some mature and some just remain griefers out to ruin people's days. the biggest thing is that MMOs are now mainstream. just remember though, one good thing about MMOs is idiots tend to get blacklisted rather quickly.

I've learned to never ask for someones age in eve and only judge by chracter. After I get to know someony pretty well, I ask him his age just for breaking my own deeply hidden socially-fed stereotypes. I have met VERY serious 15yr olds and some of the silliest 40yr olds.
It's truly amazing when you play with your stereotypes like that

I totally agree, i also started playing when i was 15, and i'm now 16. In all the corps i've been in ive often been one of the more mature players, and i very rarely smacktalk (i respond to RL insults if the person knows me)
The age stereotype in particular is perhaps the most annoying one that there is

Edited by: Righteous Fury on 15/11/2005 21:44:25 I agree wholeheartedly.
I am also infact rather young (one of the youngest in my corp), although I'm not going to disclose exactly how old here because its irrelevant. I've discovered that age matters not, should you act like a responsible and mature individual. A number of people have been suprised to find out how old I really am, usually commenting that I thought I was much older.
Usually, the age card comes out when people start acting like idiots. Problem solved right there though, don't act like an idiot, and people will respect you no matter how old you are.

Edited by: Brother Benthor on 15/11/2005 21:57:19 I believe some of u guys have played WoW and know how young ppl think and act like. WoW is probably the best example of imature behaviour in any MMRPOG. And based on that experience i make my facts, young ppl act stupid in-GAME, I believe they dont act like that in real life, but they'r vivid imagination, and the in-game enviroment, make them act stupid (insulting, smack talking, looting, and stuff like that).
Im not that old either, im 23, but even though my behaviour in game is the same as in real life, i intend to make friends in any MMRPOG i play and never make enemies.
I think if players dont want to be seen as childish-noob-players, dont act like so. Most of us dont know each other from anywhere (RL) and we base our judgments in actions and facts.
Besides my bad-english, and gramar, i think i passed the message.

It is the barrier that is the internet. It is ironic how you imagine people are from reading their posts on the forums, hearing them on TS, but when you meet them in person, they are very different. With no barrier between you and the next person, those immature people often turn out to be rather shy and quiet. The wall they get to hide behind gives them confidence and perhaps arrogance they would not have elsewhere and status they enjoy.

@topic I've seen older people (say 20+) behave mature and immature and I've seen younger people do the same thing. The only difference I could notice was that younger people normally get excited a bit easier and often lack some experience but this isn't a bad thing. Nobody was born old and so some new ideas are used and the old beaten paths aren't used always.
I've seen corps lead by 14 year olds very succesfully while the CEO wasn't avaible(and this ain't the only example of young people behaving mature and responsible). So for me age doesn't make much difference ingame but as said earlier it's always nice to play with your own prejudices after you get to know a person (and everybody has prejudices). ---------------------------
I think the whole aspect of physical age in MMOG is quite interesting. I guess it's happening quite often in MMOG and esspecially EVE because of it's emphasis on the teameffort that younger people "boss" older players around. e.g. young fleetcommander (20+-5 years old) telling some older corpmember(40+) what to do.
In RL you could hardly imagine this happening. So you sometimes see older people taken back that they were told to do by some younger player but most of the time they still do "what they are told" if it is reasonable.
