Brown bears are widely distributed, inhabiting a range that includes the northern parts of North America, Europe and Asia. Should you encounter a black bear:
- Stay calm - DO NOT RUN (running may elicit a chase response by the bear).
- Pick up children so they don't run or scream; restrain dog; avoid eye contact and talk in soothing voice.
- If the bear stands up, he is NOT going to attack but is curious and wants a better sniff or view.
- Back away slowly; if bear chomps jaw, lunges, or slaps ground or brush with paw, he feels threatened.
- Slowly retreat from area or make wide detour around bear; don't crowd or block bear's escape route.

The grizzly bear is a large predator that is different from black bears due to a distinctive hump on its shoulders. Grizzly bears have concave faces and long claws about the length of a human finger. Their coloration is usually darkish brown but can vary from very light cream to black. |

The Kangaroo moves by hopping on its hind legs using its tail for steering and balancing while hopping at speed up to 40mph/60kmh. When a kangaroo is moving slowly the tail is used as an extra leg and supports the kangaroo when it is standing on its hind legs. Most kangaroos can only move both back legs together and not one at a time. |

Red kangaroos are iconic symbols of the Australian outback, and are the largest living marsupials. Their powerful giant hindquarters enable them to leap along, covering a monstrous nine metres in a single bound.

The kangaroo is an herbivore, though its diet varies according to species. The animal has a chambered stomach, similar to that of cows, to help with the digestion process. The species also has highly specialized teeth. Its incisors are able to cut grass and shrubs extremely close to the ground and its molars are designed to grind down the vegetation. Its molars fall out regularly due to the wear and tear that comes with its diet, and are replaced with new teeth. The species has an unusual eating practice. The kangaroo regurgitates grass and shrubs that it has already eaten and chews it once more before swallowing it for final digestion. A kangaroo can survive for long periods without drinking waterGÇöhydrated by the moisture in the vegetation it consumes. |
