Especially T2 or faction ships? I feel like I ought to be investing my isk in something good...

All the T1 ships are freely available. The T2 ships cost billions for their BPs because there are insanely few of them, and they're distributed via lottery. I think the faction ships are only distributed as copies.

I'm not in the producing thing (at least atm) so this may or may not be slightly wrong.
The T1 BPO's are freely available from the market, as long as they are sold in the region of space you are in.
T2 BPO's however, are only aquired by a research "lottery" in which someone who is extremely lucky may get a valuble BPO. There are only something like 4 of each ship or something like that, so when one does come up for sale, they are worth a whole crapload of money.
Though of course, some tech2 modules are considered worthless and don't sell, so the BPO's for these aren't worth that much money at all.
Hope this helps a little bit.

I'm new - I know that you need them (BPOs and BPCs) for building stuff... But:
What is the difference between original & copy? Does it all have the same quality? How do you do Research and Manufacture (step by step and explanations of how it works would be brilliant)? And what is faction ships?
Hope you can help me out (eve-search must be down )

A BPO (tech 1) can be bought on the market from NPC corporations. A BPO (tech 2) can be won with an ingame lottery system that uses 'research points' as tickets (VERY frikking rare). You get research points by working for reseach agents. A BPO can be copied in a lab for a set number of 'production runs' (the BPO itself is unlimited). A BPC has the quality of the original BPO.

All start at 0.

You research a BPO by renting a lab. You manufacture somthing by renting a factory and using a BPO (or BPC) to make things. Look on the forums for an in depth guide, but it's really not complicated. I suggest you buy a shuttle BPO and go wild with experimenting with it, it's really cheap.

Faction ship BPCs are dropped from complexes as loot or given out by agents. There are no faction ships BPOs in game.

Blueprints are needed to manufacture items. For example a tristan.
Briefly. Blueprints have Material efficiency (ME) and Production efficiency (PE)
The higher the ME the less minerals needed to build said item. The higher the PE, the quicker it builds. You research ME/PE by putting the blueprint original into a lab.
You can also make copies of blueprints (copy = bpc). For example, you can make a 5 run copy of a tristan and sell it. The 5 run bpc is a license for someone to build 5 tristans.
To manufacture something you need a bpo / bpc and the minerals stated on the blueprint. Rent a factory, throw it in and build it.
If you want to use less minerals when building you can also train production efficiency.

About factories & labs.
Are the rent costs a one-time cost, or are they periodic (i.e. once every month)?
And generally, where's a good place to rent factories/labs? High traffic/low traffic systems?

Its a 5 day period.
Low traffic systems will be cheaper. High traffic more expensive but then you have less hauling to market. Decisions decisions...
