EVE was the name of the huge stargate leading back to earth. The stargate was destroyed several thousends of years ago.

But seriously.
EVE is the universe that you play in. A large amount of time ago people from earth had filled up their solar system, and eventually came across a natural wormhole, through which they jumped, and managed to colonise EVE. The people left on Earth continued to supply the colonies with what they needed, but one horrible day, the wormhole closed, leaving the inhabitants of EVE to fend for themselves. They mostly failed, but eventually managed to get back on their feet..
Moving forward a while, now 4 empires are there, the Amarr being the first to rediscover space travel, a 5th may be there somewhere, they are the Jove, and pwn your various bits.

hmm planetside ripped off its, settlers from earth imploded wormhole thing!
back on topic....
in theory this means we could one day see an exspanion where a jumpgate to the Milky Way is opened up or the EVE gate itself is repaired somehow. would be an interesting way to add another race as well, the Terran.
