Edited by: Seine on 15/11/2005 08:53:40 I have been reading and based on what i've seen why does everyone say to armor tank in a tempest? the shields look comprable to the armor and with shield hardeners you'd seem to do just as well. Also, shield tanking would leave most of your lows open for PDSs or Gyros. Please keep in mind I am talking about PvE not PvP. I am only a couple months old so if there is some glaring fact that I am missing I would like to know. Thanks.

Alot of people do shield tank it. You armor tank if you are using autos in pvp.

The Tempest can effectively shield tank and armour tank.
Shield Tank is Most effective against Kenetic and Explosive Damage. Matari Rats and Guristas.
Armour Tank is most effective against EM and Thermal damage. Amarr Rats and Serpentis.
However some setups will dictate the tank you can fit CPU heavy setups prefer Armour tanks and Grid heavy setups prefer shield tanks.

There is a standard rule of thumb, that if you go long range you shield tank and short range you armour tank. Although this is not always the case it does tend to be applied in most cases. I prefer to do it this way as if you are short range and go shield, your tank maybe all but gone by the time you actually get anywhere near to doing any damage against your target. If you go long, then the free lows allow you to go with dam mods etc. This may not be the real reason but it is the way that i have always thought about it.

i've always found a tempest to be very tight on cpu to fit a decent shield tank.
long range setups dont really shield tank tbh - u use range to try and minimise hits and then use a shield booster to keep up with any damage u do take.

The other reason is that if you really need a strong tank, you will probably end up going with armour because its very hard to fit an XL shield booster on a tempest with any useful armament (if anyone has a good Tempest setup with XL shield booster, please prove me wrong).
If you are going long range, then dropping a tracking 2 or a sensorbooster for a large shield boosterII is not a big problem and enough to tank the little damage which reaches you at 1400mm ranges.
However, don't get too excited by armour tanking on a Tempest - its no apoc. Even with 3 cap recharger2s and 2 heavy NOS you won't sustain 2 large reps, infact you can't quite sustain one if you have a trad 5 module tank and an RCU2. This means that once your cap is gone you'd better be free of scramblers ;) -- We are the Octavian Vanguard www.octavianvanguard.net

Depending on the attacking force of course, 2 shield hardeners and 1 XL Gist work a treat

Tanking on a tempest is just... silly. AB II or better, Sensor Booster II, 3 Tracking Computers 4tw, as many dmods as can fit in lows. 1400mm IIs ( or named / officer if you are tight on cpu ) and stay back at 100km +. Don't need shield tank if they can't even shoot back. Inties pop before the 100km approach. Drop a Tracking computer for a good officer shield if you need a buffer for interceptors nicking your shields until you get your approach tactics correct.
If your gonna tank a tempest... might as well go dual 650 IIs and an armor tank. 5 Mids = 1 AB II, 4 cap charger IIs = amor tank 4tw.

6x1400 II's
1x XL SB II 1x Boost Amp 1x 'Annointed' EM Ward 1x Ditrigonal Thermal Barrier Crystallization 1x Non-Inertial Ballistic Screen Augmentation
6x PDU IIs
With Electronics 5, Weapon Upgrades 5, and Energy Grid Upgrades 5, it should all fit. I haven't been able to test it, though as I don't have Grid upgrades 5. It does depend on being able to fill a fractional tf, so there is a possibility it may not. The grid isn't a problem.
I've been using a similare setup using Tech I howisters for a while now. It's a decent enough agent runner, though you do end up relying on your drones for killing the NPC interceptors. The tank is pretty solid, though, especially once you've trained up a few levels of Shield Compensation.
