Miners generally don't have 2 combat-fitted battleships guarding them in a low-sec belt either. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be given the option to fight back.
People seem to be looking at this as though it's a measure designed to halt ore thieving. It isn't. It's simply levelling the playing field in relation to other forms of criminality.
A low-sec mining op threatened by pirates has 3 options, fight back, safespot, or go mine somewhere else. That they have the option of fighting doesn't mean they have an automatic right to win the fight - they have to arrange that through their own choices and abilities.
Right now, a high-sec mining op threatened by ore thieves only has 2 options, secure cans (the safespot equivalent), or go mine somewhere else. The can flagging gives them that third option, to fight back. But just as in the case of the low-sec op, it doesn't give them an automatic right to win the fight.
Originally by: Nero Scuro And this is entirely stupid. The entire point of this change was to stop ore thievers from using nothing but disposable alts to thief with. And now? You have to use alts to ore thief!
If you really think using alts is going to be the only way to ore thief successfully, then you really haven't engaged your brain on the subject fully.
Originally by: Savyor If any miner has an alt sitting around for defense, then they would most likely have him in a hauler unloading the jet can as it is filled instead (assuming they don't need protection from rat spawns).
Of course, the thief could still sit by your jet-cans trying to intercept the ore (especially in places where secure cans aren't feasible for this purpose). The flagging system isn't supposed to be a cure-all for the miner's problems. It's not even supposed to be the best option in every situation. But it is a necessary option, which will be particularly effective at driving off the persistent ore thieves that otherwise could shut down the majority of mining in an entire system just by sitting there.
Originally by: Ampire The suggestion that the miner keep an alt there to move the ore back again is just as useless, as that is a massive waste of time, and won't make your mining op any safer as it now means you either need 2 accounts to mine, or that you are really quick at logging back in, as the pirate could easily have a hauler sitting nearby.
But what it does do is mean that if the ore thief decides to go at your ore regularly, you have some option to drive him off. After all, if you log on to see him in local, you're not going to go out in your mining setup. You're going to go out in a disguised combat setup, sit there pretending to mine, and wait for the thief to fall into the trap. You could even gang with other miners in the system and work together to drive him off. Right now, if an ore thief camps a system, your only options are dropping to secure containers, or going elsewhere. Now you'll have the option to try and force the thief to leave instead.
Conversely, ore thieves will need to be cleverer, able to spot traps, and know when to move on.
You can do anything. But you can't do everything. |
