There's two women in our corp that I know of.
Being aware of women gamers is actually a pretty worthwhile thing for a thread, people just assume its all guys. Some corp chat, alliance chat and teamspeak can get pretty offensive and sexist at times (not mine currently, but in my experience over time), using certain words that a bunch of guys in a locker room might use, but wouldn't/shouldn't in mixed company.

Um. You do realise that's a sexist line of thinking, right? Stuff can be appropriate for a group of guys but not for women?

I think that in general, a lot of games are geared for a male audience, and can really exclude the women who might want to play also. Only recently had the game industry be realizing that women want to join in too, and have been making their products appealing to both genders.
So you can't really blame guys for being surprised that women are playing. Things are changing, but slowly.

In Halo, if you are backing up and get stuck against a wall, and get killed because of it, we exclaim "Wall betrayed me!" Or if a similar thing happens with a corner, we say "When walls combine...the form CORNER!!!" Likewise, if jumping behind a wall saves you, it's "Yes! Saved by wall!" This joke gets extended to just about any other large, solid structure including floor, tree, rock.
Anyway, my point is, Wall betrayed you!!!

It's the reverse for me. My husband (and his son, and his best friend) introduced me to Eve quite awhile back. Before that, I was a founding member of the Eve Widows Society. I've now been kicked out!
Don't get to play as much as I'd like to, since we had a baby last spring. So when I get on now, there's always a new corp member on TS. Then I talk and it's always the shock of another woman on there. Then they find out I'm the CEO's wife and they are suddenly on their very best behavior. It's so funny.
Our corp has 2 women and a lot of bad boys. :)

Our alliance has a female fleet commander and i tell you she commands respect. It was funny to hear the silence that came over TS when she came in channel to co-ordinate us. It was like a teacher entering a classroom. Priceless. Once she left everyone's was like wow she's efficient, im not afraid to admit she scared me a little

If you can't deal with our world then you're not an equal. If you're gonna act like a spoiled princess that needs to be coddled and can't handle locker room banter, then segregate yourself off to one side and go bake cookies.
If women are gonna be equals then yall need to act like equals, you can't have it both ways.

There's always a lot of interest in the 'how many girls..' threads. It's partly, I suppose, that most of the female avatars in the game are actually played by guys. When one suddenly turns out to be played by a real female, it makes you do a quick double-take. Oh my God! That girl is a...girl! It's both funny and slightly sad that we get used to assuming that our fellow players are guys.
It's generally a big subject for the games industry as a whole too. As it grows to compete and, even, exceed the film industry, it has failed to interest 50% of its potential market. Hollywood has always managed to make films that have general appeal, as well as the films that tend to be 'chick flicks' etc. Games, in general, haven't managed that yet. Except for The Sims. Is the Sims the 'chick flick' of the games industry? That it is incredibly successful is surely significant if that is the case.
Do men and women generally want different things from games? Certainly, women are a minority in Eve. I'd have a hunch that an RPG set in a non-genre world would have more appeal to the female demographic if it was done well. The Sims and maybe Second Life perhaps point the way?
For Eve, I think the interesting question would be why do women play it? PVP? Interaction? Economy? SciFi setting? Freedom of action?
If I was female, I think one attraction would be the possibility of creating a tough, independent character, whose avatar isn't reminiscent of some guy's fantasy **** star. Eve has done a great job in this regard - most games (all?) have their female characters so objectified into the stereotyped, impossibly-breasted caricatures of teen fantasy sex objects, that it has to be a barrier to playing.

So your arguing that in order for a woman to be classed on the same par as a man, she has to participate in habits stereotypicaly attributed to men? Why cant a woman just be respected for being a woman rather than having to minic the behaviour of men?

Its a gentlemans way. I know people who dont say the F word around women. Frankly women should take it as a sign of respect rather then scream sexism.

No. You don't have to participate in my habits but you are not going to change them either. I don't ask you to change for me, don't ask me to change for you. Be yourself, we like women believe it or not.

What do a bunch of guys in a locker room talk about? Presumably sexual encounters with or directed at women? Then this is transfered to alliance chat, where they are not aware real women actually exist so talk about it anyway. I kind of see that as trying to talk behind someones back without knowing they're in listening range
I think a lot of guys would tone it down if they realised women were actually listening...not to be gentlemanly/sexist but just to avoid aggro
But some are not that smart and deserve what they get __________________________ Indulge Me |

Hi necromancy ftw!!
Well tbh it just dont bother me if females are in game, as long as they listen to you when they ask u sommat then np.
female or no we all have our uses ( there was a quote somewhere that a female in a corp was better at calling the primary due to the multitasking that comes naturally to women.)
Men can be funny but also offensive, however if she can handle it, np, i couldn't give two flying ducks tbh.
Kudos to those who do manage it.
All the best ThaMa.

This doesn't apply to eve quite as much. But one reason for having a female toon in some games, if you are a guy, is quite simple. If you are going to spend three hours a day looking at your toon's rear end as it runs around, it might as well be nice to look at.
