So, I played a couple years ago and joined a Rookie corp which was based out of The Forge \ Wuos. I like the general area and the fact that it's 7 jumps from Jita. However, I think I want to get back into running missions and possibly Faction Warfare eventually. I am currently sitting in Caldari space which means that I get faction missions against Gallente (Which is bad).
I am looking to move home bases as I only have a couple ships and not much else currently. However, I am a little bit overwhelmed right now on where to move to. Are there multiple trading posts like Jita? Or am I shooting myself in the foot by moving away from the area that I am in currently?
Since I came back to Eve I have been mostly dabbling in different skills such as running scanned pirate bases, exploration and mining. I was thinking of trying to join Eve Uni and get a better feel for the game before I branched out. But from what I am hearing it's a month to even get an interview with their Corp.
How did you all pick your home base and why? |

I pick my "home bases" by proximity to some activity that I am doing. So over there in Aydoteaux and Tolle I have my ice harvesting operation. Over there in Mehatoor I have my exploration base. My manufacturing activities take place in close proximity to Dodixie. My mission-running fleet is currently in a system where I have access to agents for a particular NPC corp.

You want some place that won't be a pain for you when you want to do anything Those places are available it is just you need to notice them
I on my alt live with a bunch of friends in a system, where we mine mainly We are few jumps away from a trade hub so we keep mining and trade stuff there If we wanted ever to do some PVP (for the people who are not carebears of us) we have 2 lowsec systems 2 jumps away each one Also the quality of ores we have is just awesome for a highsec system, not to mention system activity which is medium to low for active pilots We can do exploration sites, manufacturing and everything based in 1 system
This system though we did not find it in matter of days I kept moving between systems, seeing how it goes in them until I got the right system then we moved the whole corp there in 1 day
So you need lots of searching and good intel before you commit on moving between bases, because that is time intensive thing that will make your income halt for a while until you re-setup stuff in new home |

I tended to like high sec islands in low sec (there's one close to Jita btw). Usually was extremely safe from war decers (saw one in the year I lived in high sec) and suicide gankers and had the benefits of both areas. Nowadays I have a quiet low sec pocket getaway where I can even mine in peace =) Chose that because I relocated my cap ships there between null sec homes.
Mainly based in null sec since a couple of years back tho. |

Each empire has its own trade hubs, though Jita is the best-positioned and gets the most traffic. The Gallente have Dodixie, the Minmatar have two, Rens and Hek, and the Amarr have, well, Amarr (specifically Amarr VIII a/k/a Oris).
When I re-entered the game, I found myself basing out of Dodenvale by default, because that's where I'd left most of my stuff when I had to unsub back in '06 or so due to moving overseas. Then I found a corp that was looking for places to go, and we settled on a dead-end system about four jumps out of Jita.
I've done operations in low and null since then, but in choosing a base, I've always had two criteria:
1) It's got to be reasonably accessible from wherever the forward operating base for the corp is. 2) It's got to be somewhere I can fall back to if things go completely south.
IE: don't put everything in a faction-war-zone station if you're in faction warfare, because you could be locked out if the system flips, and don't put everything in a sov-null station, because you could be locked out if your sponsoring group's allegiance flips. That basically leaves friendly hi-sec, low-sec (non-FW low-sec if you're in FW), and NPC null-sec.
I'd say: scout out possible locations using light ships, see what looks good to you, and then once you've found a system you think you can call home, haul some of your stuff over (don't take it all in one trip), or if you're ready to commit, perhaps hire a freight line such as Red Frog to ship your stuff to your new home. Generally, each faction has its own trading hub. Jita is the single biggest trading hub which means it has the best prices, but this usually means no more than about 5% cheaper than elsewhere for common items .
For Caldari, Jita is the main hub For Gallente, Dodixie is the main hub For Minmatar, Rens is the main hub For Amarr, Amarr is the main hub
There are also sub-hubs available throughout space, usually on the FW border |
