This post is aimed at facilitating discussion regarding the present handling/endorsement of harassment-related petitions in EVE. It is not a rant and should not be viewed as one.
As it stands now, anyone using foul language (whether playing a role or not), in a public chat channel is subject to violating this rule of conduct:
Quote: You may not harass other players. This includes, but is not limited to, hateful, racist, sexually explicit, threatening and harmful comments. Partial masking and alternative typing for such comments will be punishable by the same standards as the comments themselves.
Violation of this conduct results in a warning and possible banning.
Aside from being extremely general, this guideline is breaching our right to free speech. While there is the argument that we are not entitled to free speech inside CCPs game, such a statement (in my opinion) is simply ignorant. The fact is, we reside in a virtual world that promotes war, death and destruction, yet simple words from complete strangers mean more than frozen corpses floating in space. I want to reserve the right to express myself in any way I see fit, and others simply donĘt have to listen. Inside the game, if someone does not want to hear what I have to say they can simply click the block button. ThatĘs fact. Introducing language filters that can be turned on and off can further protect the virgin eyes of some more sensitive players.
Please note that I firmly support the idea of ending continuous harassment, but a little smack-talk during time of war should never be viewed as such.
Ultimately, the point is that those that petition for foul language/harassment (usually in a time of war) do so to create problems for those making the comments, not because they are legitimately offended but because they wish to harass the 'legal' way.
With that said, I am very disappointed with CCPs ability to filter legitimate and illegitimate claims of harassment. Smack-talk is just part of playing a role. I use it to increase my chances of getting called primary when my enemy isnĘt docked or cloaked. Like I said before, if someone doesnĘt like what I have to say, or how I say it, the game offers the ability for them not to listen.
Instead of warning/banning players for using foul language, players should be responsible for whatever content they wish to view. Period.
