How about making smartbombs unable to damage cans. That would make them 10 times more useful. Would this be possible?

Uh, they don't damage cans. Fact is, the game doesn't even keep track of wether the explosion touches the can or not.
Micro and Small smartbombs should be buffed up, or have lower activation time.

Smartbombs don't hurt cans? When did that happen?
I once took down 2 inties with 6 large smartbombs, and everything was gone. Ships, cans and corpses .
But, in response to the topic, they should allways hurt everything within range. Otherwise it would be to spaced out (lack better words, sorry). But, if they shouldn't hurt can's, they shouldn't hurt non-targets. Now, that would make them extremly usefull in empire ![Razz](/images/icon_razz.gif)

At the moment smartbombs arent very smart.
Making them hit only things you have targetted would make them a lot more usable empire....but it would reduce their effectiveness substantially.
1)Locktime before use, cant be used when jammed 2)Wouldnt 'shoot down' incoming missiles 3)Not as useful against swarms 4)Dire awful against drones
Could go on and on here.
I like them the way they are, I think they need more range to be truly useful, though. Good named/T2 really need the ranges that faction smarties have now.

A simple solution would be to have a 'smart' mode.
In regular mode, the smartbombs work exactly like they do now. In smart mode, they will only damage ships that have agressed you (including incoming missiles). However in smart mode they will only do half as much damage, or have a longer activation time, higher cap usage, etc. to balance out the fact that they can now be used in empire space without having to worry about concord.

My main problem with SBs is their range.

Maybe there could be a directed pulse mode? (a la Star Trek deflector dish thing)

SB's are fine as they are actually.
I have a 2 micro Smartbombing slasher setup that can kill rats in .3 easily.
Sure you lose alot of ships in empire but they are sooooo much fun to use.
I vote no to any change on smartbombs.

If you're going to grip about that being unrealistic, then go whine about the ships stopping when you turn the engines off.

They wont even activate if they are in range of a gate or station.

Honestly, that change to smartbombs was what, a YEAR ago?
Frankly, I wish some things WOULD damage cans. Drones at least. I prefer to kill my junk in the belt and I hate wasting ammo on it.

Wrong!
Almost lost a ship a week ago because my smartbomb hit a station.
Oh, i know they are not supposed to hit a station, but it is still possible to do.

You cannot activate it within 5k of a station or gate, if you are using a faction one with larger range then it is possible to attack gate or station.

Is this a joke? thats what basically what smart bomb is, if you ahve to lock, they are just a 100% hit low DPS cap-eating turret
They are currently good as they are, dont see any problem with them.
