MXO adding Massive ingame adds
Wouldn't this just be the coolest thing in Eve?
Imagine docking at a station and seeing Pepsi adds instead of Quafe. Or billboards advertising the newest MMOG to play hanging around in space.
We could have popups with advertisements every time you gate or activate a module. Wouldn't that make PvP far more exciting than just attacking some random guy? You could navigate through a screen of popups as you attempt to lockdown your enemy. It would be like a whole new mini-game to test your hand-eye coordination.
Oooo, they could even send us advertisments for Cialix and R0L3X watches in our inboxes. I know I would feel far more appreciated if every time I log into Eve I would have several hundred emails waiting to be deleted. I'd be just like CYVOK (though I hear he actually reads his mail for some reason).
This would even allow aspiring programers to write spam blockers and sell them for ISK.
The possibilities are endless.

I wanted to read the article. I really did. But I got lost after reading this:
"More real-world products to be advertised in virtual world based on real-world movie that suggests real world is really virtual."
Damn, now I am confused. :-(

Basically its allowing real world products to advertise in eve for example the billbourd could advertise Coca-Cola, Pepsi,Walkers chips etc.
Terrable idea will ruin eve and can only work in certain games like matrix.

Edited by: Torquemanda Corteaz on 18/11/2005 23:42:00 I get hammered with advertising when I browse the internet, look at the walls down a street, or just generally everywhere you look. I do not want to be bombarded with adverts in a science fiction MMO too. CCP gets its revenue from it's insanely large subscription base, it doesn't need the money from the megacorporations such as McDonalds or cocacola, I can understand why a desperate mmo with a low population may jump at such a chance, but even doesnt need it

I don't recommend it though. It can have some damaging effects on your ability to recall and process facts according to your previous opinions. Well it seems you apparently lack the good sense to not pay attention to what troublemakers have to say.
This is a thread about the science of advertizing to the mass man right? Which posters get the message?

honestly, as much capitalist BS that it is. I read the article and for a game like MXO where it is supposed to be based on presant day earth such a move provides more immersion into the game world. It makes Sony more money but, again, meh, it allows immersion into the game world on a previously untapped level. I think it would be sort of cool to wander around in a game based in the presant time and see advertisements on bilboards and the such for real life products.
Note: I do not support the playing of MXO or any other game than eve, just saying it would be a coll concept :)

If done as in Anarchy Online, I would have absolutely no problem with it. Those ads are certainly not intrusive, and you only even see them at all if you want to skip actually paying for the game.
Once the server stability and latency issues are sorted out, I think it'd be a great way to attract new players. The "play for free if you're willing to look at some ads" part, that is.

Tbh this has been going on for years, remember it started on the humble zx spectrum.
And ok, so it was only the fanboys that bought it, but do they not advertise quafe ingame, and did they not sell it...

The sad part is the people who think it will contribute to the game money-wise and better content.
SOE will milk MXO with RL adds and drop it when their done like a 2isk wh*re.
When they see subscriptions start to level and not increase, they'll drop that ***** fast.

No OOG companies. In game companies though, that would be awesome. Dock and see Naga or BIG ads on those floating billboards. Would give them something to do with those piles of isk that are cluttering up thier wallets. ------------------ Silver Night Director -Production and Science

I thought that happened months ago. Maybe this is their last-ditch effort at profit?

lol the banner that simply refuses to go away.. ("this advertisement will only display once"... *******s!) advertising fanfest (afaia that has been and gone) is bad enough on the log in screen.

Where is my nerf bat for this twit. We have enough pop up ads on the internet now and you want to bring it into the game.
May you have nothing but ctd's for the next decade and camel fleas in your shorts.

first of all i agree to all of u but on the other hand side if ccp would implement such things imagine how much oney they would have monthly so they could invest it to buy some dev¦s Tech 2 or stuff so we would also profit for it as long as there are no popups in eve i dont see a problem seeing coca cola on the billbord or in stations
what u think about this point of view?

I played MxO during beta which to be honest is the stage it was released at and from what i've read and heard its still a beta. Great idea horribly executed.
Sony have "especially ruined for your pleasure" many games with their corporate whoring. I cancelled my Planetside account when Sony introduced advertising billboards ingame - I mean wtf has Tango drink got to do with a war 2000 years in the future on a planet "far far away"
Now they do the same thing in MxO. Some players in EVE dont know how lucky they are having CCP as the devs. The fortunes of war, i'll tell you plain, is a wooden leg or a golden chain. |

I disagree. Take a look at the EVE Chronicles, for example. They give you a strong feel for how different the universe is in the EVE age compared to now; how the things that were normal for planet Earth are ancient myths and legends as far as EVE is concerned. One thing I appreciate about EVE is how it presents itself as a completely different environment and dimension. Seeing "drink coke" signs, Geico reptiles and AFLAC ducks plastered everywhere would really change the EVE experience IMO. Those things are not supposed to exist anymore.
...unless a fifteen minute call really *did* save you 15% or more on car insurance, and the legend lived beyond the wormhole.
But really, I don't see such ads happening in EVE and hope it stays that way. CCP is far more committed to the well-being of its community than any other game developer out there, and seeing that RL advertising may indeed bring in more money... it'd chase alot of us away as well.
My two and half cents.
