I've been encountering the same issue, but mine seems (possibly) due to a dual-core cpu
AMD Athlon64 X2 4400+ (2200Mhz / 1MB L2 cache per core) DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR 4x1024MB OCZ PC4000EL (also with just 2x1024MB) XFX GeForce 7800GTX SB Audigy2ZS 3x80GB Hitachi SATA II RAID-0 600w OCZ Powerstream psu Danger Den watercooling on both cpu & 7800GTX Windows XP Sp2 w/all updates
I've tried every trick I can think of
updated motherboard drivers updated video drivers tried during off-peak hours tried during full-peak hours tried with AA/AF disabled tried with sound disabled tried setting the game to 'affinity 0' (ie you instruct windows to only run the program on 1 core of the dual-core cpu)
temps are not the problem as my cpu never gets above 30C with watercooling, and the 7800GTX has a full waterblock covering the entire card, and the gpu never gets above 35C under load, and the memory never gets above 38C under load (cpu and video card are on a separate loop each)
drivers are not the problem (overall) as this machine plays F.E.A.R., HL2/DoD Source, Quake4, NFS Most Wanted, Warhammer 40,000, Serious Sam II, Battlefield2, etc for very long periods without any problems (4+ hours each)
the game will just shut down to desktop with no warning after about 30 minutes or less. I was wondering if it is just a dual-core AMD cpu thing, as many games have had problems with these cpu's, yet I've solved all the issues with other games by applying the MS hotfix for AMD dual core cpu's, as well as AMD's cpu driver.
I can say for sure that there's just something with Eve that is doing it because this machine gets extremely heavy use, including games, Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, etc, and never has a problem with any other program. This machine has NEVER rebooted itself nor errored in the entire time I have used it (since January, and changed to dual-core cpu 4 months ago).
Plus...I have a
3.4Ghz s478 Pentium4 Northwood 2x1024MB Corsair 3500LL PRO DFI LanParty 865PE motherboard ATI Radeon 9800XT AGP onboard sound (C-Media junk) 80GB Hitachi SATA hdd NEC DVD-RW Danger Den watercooling on cpu OCZ 520w Powerstream psu Windows XP SP2 w/all updates
rig sitting right next to it that also does the same duty as this main rig does, and it has never had a problem before, except I put Eve on it to see if it would run it better than this dual-core AMD, and it just shuts down to the desktop (but never has rebooted or bsod'd) about every 15-30 minutes sometimes.
It does however, for the most part, play the game longer than my dual-core AMD does before doing this.
I'm not really upset, as at least when i get dumped to the desktop, my ship flies out of danger (and it has never happened during a nasty battle yet where I might not get to escape when getting booted).
I am just more looking for someone that has the same problem, or if anyone knows if there is possibly anything else that can be done.
I did disable AA & AF on the 7800GTX and SOMETIMES it seems to run a bit longer...but it only seems to dump to the desktop when I am in space. I cannot recall a time it has done this while I am in the station just hanging out lol.
strangley...my gf's machine plays her account just fine:
DFI Lanparty SLI-D AMD Athlon FX-55 2x1024MB OCZ PC3200 SB Audigy1 sound ATI X850XT PE 80GB Hitachi SATA hdd NEC DVD-RW Fortron BlueStorm 500w ATX2.0 psu Danger Den watercooling on cpu WindowsXP SP2 w/all updates
it has crashed on her once, and that was during heavy peak hours (about 18,000 members online i think)
Then i thought maybe it was....well, I think it is just the game.
We played all through beta (on different rigs of course) way back when, and only experienced normal problems (game was really buggy).
Then we played for about a year on these same rigs and no problems ever. Five months later, we are playing again, but something in the game maybe has changed?
thx for reading (again, not complaining...just trying to find a solution!)
