Browsing the sell forum for a couple weeks now... looking to get a nice combat character, i was surprised by the many many scams and fake auctions. Here is a sorta guide on how to look at a auction ... and for those that want to sell , how to post one so it doesent look as a scam:
First of all: WHY DOES SOMEONE SELL A CHARACTER? 1. has more than one and sells off an alt. 2. is leaving game and wants some isk for he's friends in game In any case... posting a char on forum is... as per eula... a ingame sell for isk. Also... the name o the character should not be an issue. WHY HIDE THE CHAR NAME? for sure friends will know the char changes owners, in 99% of the auctions there should be NO REASON to hide the char name.
ok... enough talk... here should be the logical/resonable rules to posting a char auction or look for in a char auction:
1. SCREENSHOTS 2. Matching things in those screenshots. (take time to add up each category with the total sp listed, also look for editing in those screenshots) 3. character name (and he's creation time should match the SP) 4. A clear start bid, reserve, sniping rule etc just like in the auction rules in this forum. 5. Post should be made by the char being sold (if is an alt the char being sold should still be available for a chat in game) Use some common sense... ask why the char is being sold...
Now THE SCAMS: 1. The character is FAKE (the char being sold does not exist)
2. The account is hacked (or someone else finds the password) or more common... the account pass is known by a couple friends and they have a fight... etc
3. The auction is FAKE (Just like case one... the auctioneer doesent actually want to sell the char, but he owns or has access to a char like the one in the auction)
In case 1... is simple... he doesent have Screenshots... he can't update the screenshots, he can't answer simple questions about the character or there are discrepancies between the things he listed.
Case 2 tip off's THE NAME IS HIDDEN Fast auctions, buyit now etc... (the seller is in a hurry) he is willing to pass the account directly to you (he wants/ask's for it) The account has multiple assets (ok... one could leave some items as they minght not be worth the trouble) but if there are noticeable things one the account you should wonder why (as he wants isk... right?)
Things to do: ALWAYS ASK THE SELLER TO BE READY TO TRANSFER THE CHAR IMEDIATLY UPON SENDING THE ISK Have an account ready for this... or make a trial account and just transfer there ASK THE SELLER TO TELL YOU THE NAME (if you are the auction winner there shouldnt be anymore reasons to keep it hidden) - Also keep in mind u might get a warning or a temp ban if you win and not pay for an auction If the character is not transfered within 15 minutes... PETITION dont let him have time to... do whatever he's doing
One more thing to mention, about the transfer fee. Read the eula again... it doesent say anywhere that you can't use a friends credit card to pay for the subscription... or for the transfer fee (in this case... lets say that friend is the buyer) one thing you will have to do... the way i seeit is to mention this verry clearly... You retain the account... and all rights to it... (Sharing the account password is not agains eula per se is just that ccp will not reinburse you if sumething goes wrong, and you will still be responsable to what is done with that account ...) get these facts straight. So you can (tough is not recomended) have the buyer pay the fee, just mention that in your post - You still only SELL THE CHARACTER - not the account
Thats about what i can think of right now... if i said something wrong... let me know and i will edit this... or if the moderators want to clear some of the points i made about eula (that i may have missinterpreted) just let me know and ill edit the post. --------------------------------- Im obviously an alt |

For one, to protect the buyer from letting it be known, that this character was not his. Was not trained by him and therefore making him look like a noob with a great char.

wrong read this
Quote: (1) You may not offer to transfer characters except your own, or act as a ôbrokerö or intermediary (for compensation or otherwise) for anyone wishing to transfer or obtain characters.
You can't access another person's account to transfer their character, even though it means that it will be your character, you can't do this on behalf of the seller.

OK Artemiss has some good points ... but let me get you straight:
You say might be a reason to hide the char name to protect the buyer. - I can agree to that... but that would be for the buyer's protection... so let's say the buyer asks you to tell him the name? well that should solve this... eve mail the name to those interested... problem solved Tough ... be realistic... those that know the char... already know is being sold... those that dont know him... wouldnt knowit at all (imho)
NOW... ABOUT THE TRANSFER THING As you point out what one cant do... What i sugested does not fall into that category: The seller (owner) offers the transfer (he sells he's char) no brockers or anything here. Only thing is that someone else pays the fee. two different things. --------------------------------- Im obviously an alt |

A couple more toughts about PRICES... but im a hard customer... (prolly the reason i havent found a char yet)
Usually the 100mil isk/ 1 mil sp is about where things go... the exceptions are interesting:
Things that get the price up: 1. - Research agents/ research points - is a wise investment and most ppl will spend only for the research points alone. 2. - Specialization - 99% of times someone is buying an alt (as they already madesome isk they have a char that can make the iskies for them). Ok... an alt therefor is needed/bought for a specific purpose (be it mining/pvp/missions/etc) so having a clear line of work for the char will up the price quite a bit. 3. - Atributes - having the right atributes for the job... falls a bit under specialization but in general... a combat char should have maxed Perc/will, industrials int/mem, agent runners perc/will with a decent charisma
Things that make the price go down: Oposite to what i said above... and a couple more things i saw: 1. - Having a char's atributes maxed one way and the skills trained another way: Have a combat trained char with maxed int/mem ... this is one big nono as anyone wanting to buyit will realise that further training will go slow... and noone buys a char to re-train in another field. 2. - Low sec. status - this is for some a problem and might avoid it... but likewise is a bonus for some 3. - Verry well known characters - tough rarelly seen on auction... they dont sell quite as good... --------------------------------------- SPECIALIZATION:------------------------ --------------------------------------- OK... so i have the sik and im looking for a second character (there is also the case when one has a char... made some isk... stashed the isk and just wants to "upgrade a char") - this is a rare exception as most of the times even those that want an upgrade, prefer to have 2 chars on the same account rather than just sell the old and buy one better... but... in any other case ... one needs a second char for a specific reason. 1. - Industry - Should have Atributes maxed on Intell/Mem 2. - Combat - should have Atributes maxed on Perception/Willpower 3. - Missions/research - can have any mix but still inclined to perc/will/char ---------------------- 1. - Skills: Industry ofcourse... mining / refining / production / etc now there can be specific miners... or spec refiners... but once it has trained most stuff in industry one can train quite easy in the other area. One thing to note here: Ship skills... these will/should train harder thus ready trained barge 5, Intheron5(or some other indy5), Apoc 4(still good mining) maybe some skills for tanking-mining morphite are to take note. ---------------------- 2. Combat Skills: Here you look for a nice progression: Inty/AF trained... should have small gun/missile race specific spec also for gun chars should have most gun/missile generic skills at least to lvl 4 and some to lvl 5 HAC - Should have small/med gun spec and also start to look for some decent (lvl 4) support skill: sdrone skills, tanking(shield or armor)skills, ew, cov.ops, etc Battleship - Should have BS lvl 5... spec-ed in the guns/missiles for that bs, most/all support skills to 5 and all gun/missile generic skills to 5
Damn long night... so i may be trolling some more --------------------------------- Im obviously an alt |

just having a ponder over you thread and i agree you should see at least a screen shot of the charaters mug, name and skills in the same shot, i see no reson to hide the name , other than a tactical reson with in game wars ect.
thinking about it, i could quit easy screen shot all my skills abtututes ect and add an alts mug and name screen shot sepratly , so seeing the mug shot, name, and skills on the same pic would be half way there to trust the seller ? seeing there are so many scams in this game at the moment . other than that i don,t know any politics about buying or sell charaters
glad i read your thread as im looking for a builder charater atm

Yup... if is a forum deal is safe
Tough might take a bit to get ur isk back and i believe they only get a tempban i think...
However... problem is when they use some alts... trial accounts and so on... so they dont loose much but if they succeed can use the isk to trade for timecards or sum other bad things --------------------------------- Im obviously an alt |

Why would the buyer send the isk prior to character transfer??? I just bought a character for 2.5b and insisted on the character being transferred and checked out prior to me sending the isk.
The character can be tracked far easier then isk going to a possible trial account with no real connections to their legit account. Then some quick purchases of mega/zyd jettisoned in a ss to their real character to make it difficult for ccp to track where the isk was transferred to their real account.
No, at worst I would use a well known and reputable 3rd party like naga to hold the isk until i confirmed the character transfer and stats. If something isnt right, the 3rd party would just hold the isk until ccp straightened it out.

I hide chars name sometimes especially because i buy sell chars alot like 4 every few days, and after probably selling a good 40 by now i have found it that alot of people buying dont want the name of the char to be public knowledge. For whatever reasone. What i do in this case is offer a list (10 or so) of chars i have sold in the past and give you a chance to talk to them and ask them about my credebility as a character broker. Now on another note i have had problem of scammers stealing my Screen Shots. So what i do now is open a message box like ur typing an evemail and type a message reffering to me beeing the owner of the char and its also easy to type in any bonuses that come with the char.i sell alot and acquire alot of assets so 90% of the items i will leave alone, like my last auction was a hac pilot but my main chars i play with dont specialize in flying that races hac. Well then i let ppl know that that is an included asset for the reason of getting a boost in isk for char and to save myself the hassle of trying to sell it. Anyways alot of things you mention are correct, however there are exceptions to some of your points.
Anyways im tired of typing.

Well i see some good points regarding the sell of characters and well i must admit there are exceptions... but as i said... one should talk to the seller and see why he does one thing or the other.
Also true, for some this may be a waste os space... but cmon... as long as ppl get scammed... they need help... maybe not everyone is paranoid like me, maybe some are new at this, in a hurry and for whatever reason they might overlook some aspects and have an unpleasant experience. --------------------------------- Im obviously an alt |

A lot of good points here. Though it cannot be stickied, Ill allow bumping of this thread per sell order rules.
Now, If you are suspicious of a scam auction send us a mail at [email protected] and well look at it asap. Please if you can try to quote the first post so if the OP edits it, we still have something to look at. For you uber photoshop gurus who have a better eye at spotting doctored screenshots, feel free to put some sort of marking on a saved copy so we can easily see if it is truly false. If we feel it is a scam, we will lock it and pass it on to kieron, who will deal with it accordingly.
If you do get scammed, mail us asap so we can lock the thread so the OP cant edit it. Then petition the character, include a link to the thread, screenshots of convos and any other thing that could help them to figure out what happened. They will reimburse you the isk, and the scamming character will be takin care of according to the GM policies.

*bump*
For the record ive auctioned 2 characters and there is no good reason for the anyone auctioning not to transfer the char b4 the isk is paid, these auctions are well protected and you will get your character back, in the first auction the buyer gave me the isk first, that was there choice, on the second auction i transfered the char first. If i chose to auction another character i'd have no problem transfering before the deal is concluded, the important thing to remember here is that you will be protected.

I prefer that the sellers keep the character name hidden, so that if I so choose to use the character in a naughty way it won't get linked top my main, which many prefer you use when bidding.
Also, many people are to tech unsavey to be able to take and post screen shots.

This is an excellent post Elven :) really great job!
I just sold a character and the buyer asked me to send SS of her skills along with his open convo to confirm that it was not a scam. He had been scammed prior. :( I was happy and obliged. The sell went very smooth. It is a shame of some that make it bad for others.
But i do also want to give a hats off to CCP for their quick help in straightening out all these petitions....they are doing a very good job and it is also good to see that people are still bidding and selling with all the scamming going on....good buying, selling and bidding to all....just be careful when doing it :) |

I understand that char transfers take till the next downtime, though don't know for sure.
Regarding the various posts on here, there is some good pointers and advice, though I don't agree with the name hiding bit. Sometimes even BPs or mods might be preferable to trade with anonymity, and with characters I think that's more important still. Some characters can earn a reputation, good or bad in game, and that can be a factor, despite a change of ownership. Some pilots will prefer to keep their purchase seperate from their primary character for one reason or other, perhaps to do things in other regions they might not be allowed/able to do due to wars, alliance/corp rules etc, and that is their right.
I don't think hiding the name is a sign of a scam, and truthfully believe the chars name is noones business but the sellers and the winning buyer (an auction winner should be notified before they part with their isk by way of an FYI at the least). But some good advice, and fair pointers.
PS. Where did the mysterious 100m/1m SP *rule* come from? Did someone make it up? -------------
