I have been involved with EVE since 2005 and there is one thing I've always wondered and wish could be updated.
When a structure explodes or a ship goes down there is a nice show. but when an asteroid is depleted it vanishes with nothing. there is a significant amount of people whose career in EVE is mining. I would say enough to warrant attention.
A seemingly simple upgrade that has long been needed is depletion effects and graphics for asteroids, or more appropriately the lack off effects. something....anything. grand or small doesn't matter to me. this is a problem with immersion. Although people have probably never really payed attention, or maybe they have, it would still improve immersion and make mining a bit more interesting to add effects to the asteroids as the are depleted.
Anyone who has ever turned all eight turrets on eight structure walls to watch the multiple explosions knows what i mean. it would be fun to mine and anticipate the neat effect when the asteroid goes, rather then just poof nothing but look another vanished.
Mining is featured as one of the major Careers in eve, in fact it is what all other industry is built on. why not make it more graphically appealing to do. I cant think of why not. Although the incarna expansion had its controversial issues, the upgrade to character graphics was needed and I personally love the quality, even if the functionality is not really present. Mining needs just a small portion of what incarna did for character photos to make it so much more fun then it already is. More ships for industry would be nice, and i agree with the plans to put out more ships, Hopefully more ships to use in industry. ship to ship combat is a fundamental aspect of eve and the reason a lot of people love the universe, but please pay attention to what builds the universe people love to blow up at the same time.
i believe that improving the experience of mining by adding effects to asteroids as they are depleted would be a great and welcome addition to the game. several new players have mentioned and i mean a lot more then can can explain, through the years that mining is boring. Why does it have to be? Since mining is the foundation of so much and the new focus is on improving eve, Don't just pay attention to PVP or new ships. Give attention to an area the game exonerates and is the focus of so much activity and improve the experience for people who love to mine. Please give us eye candy for the people who mine, new depletion graphics please! |

I always support the idea of graphic elements and effects.
In this case, I think the idea of explosions might be misplaced... In my mind, the concept of mining is that the asteroid is being depleted of mass until nothing remains. -áKind of like the mining laser is slowly eroding it. -áIt makes little sense to me for an unusable husk of rock left from a mined out veldspar asteroid to inexplicably energetically combust.
That being said, I agree that additional effects would be welcome... perhaps when an asteroid is mined out, the remaining husk is deliberately detonated by the mining vessel in order to scatter the elements and promote future asteroid growth? -áThis at least provides a plausible (albeit fantastical) reason for the graphic. |

more expolosions is always a good thing.
That being said i agree with one of the other posters about the rock simply depleting, how would the roid suddenly and energetically dissapear?
This type of physics is a moot point since it is a video game, but what if CCP used that happening to enable a benefit say "as the roid makes its death rattle if you activate another mining laser on it at the moment it depletes you get a larger amount of mins from the final pull."
Its just an idea but its a game mech like that would make it beneficial to be an active miner. like a benefit for not being a Bot. |

what if it imploded, with an effect similar to vulcan being destroyed in the star trek movie,.. would make more sense i suppose |

it wouldn't need to be an explosion, just something interesting to look at. right now the fun of mining is different for everyone but it is not because of the graphics element and that is really a shame. i like the implosion idea but it doesn't have to be that either, it could be simply the rock breaks apart as it splits in two when depleted, but really there's a lot of things that could be done to make mining fun to watch. perhaps even random effects so it wouldn't be predictable what would happen. right now any improvement to the show would be welcome. thanks again for the posts |

I don't understand Woo glin, how does improving mining's appeal not improve the long term health of the game. since this is what makes everything else...literally? but that can be your opinion if you disagree or did i misinterpret your post?. i'm not going to say i'm right or wrong just that i know of a lot of people who have noticed the same things i have, and would love this too. thanks for the posts guys both for and possibly against. |

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Incarna has already given us enough useless eye candy, my mining experience really didn't feel any better with new effects on the mining lasers and effects on the asteroids fall into the same category.
The difference between changing the effects on the lasers compared to asteroids in time spent for ccp is absolutely massive and as such I'd way rather see them spend time on things that improve actual game play rather than something that can just be turned off with the appropriate settings in the graphics menu.
Edit: fixed some spelling. |

Honestly Steven i do agree with you, depending. although you are sorta missing the point( i think). Mining is a career and it is apart of game play. For me and a lot of others it is game play. So if your suggesting improving mechanics of mining methods. or implementing ships that provide function to mining equally in comparison to other areas, i love it and if they don't work on graphics a lot and instead spread the work to mechanics and functionality as well, then yes please. However if your advocating, ignoring this portion of the game because your opinion is that it is not a major portion of the game and that it should be disregarded for other areas, like PVP, then id disagree.
imagine this: If everyone stopped mining, for whatever reason you choose to use, for 30 days.( a massive bug that prevented mining lasers from working if you want.) and no minerals were provided through mining, imagine what would happen to the market.
the effect would drastically impact the market and ships would become a lot more scarce over time and this would impact everything else, so if an area of the game that would have such an impact on the rest of the game, I would have to think it should be important.
Now imagine this: if everyone stopped fighting and blowing crap up for 30 days, for whatever reason you want to use.( a massive bug that made damage not recorded on opposing ships if you want) that would impact the game, but in a different way.
The point I'm showing is there is an interlinking of each main area of this game to say one area is more important then another is ludicrous. because if one area stops working the game would grind to a halt eventually. so this premise is why I'm advocating improvements to mining here and graphics have long been needed for the asteroids, and that is a good place to start for mining. i am not saying to ignore other areas, just simply a plea to CCP to give us equal time in the new focus on EVE. Notice I'm a red head, I'm hoping CCP stops treating me as a step-child. |

if this was real mining i guess the asteroid would shrink. or maybe watch it crumble away and then the small parts vanish... but if a whole asteroid belt is being minned then you have dozens of asteroids dissolving.. I'm not sure if animations like that strain the server or computer or not...
but still I approve of the idea. |

OK well if you haven't seen the new video watch it lots of good stuff :) also i 've been told this is a waste of time to even hope for. well they apparently care a lot about feel in game considering they spent a lot of time designing the nebula's to better show a good feel on where you are in space.
if they spend time on this cool idea, why wont they do something to make mining better looking, makes sense to me.
Id love a DEV responsce to this ( i know i m less likely to get a response by asking but i'm excited on the new focus) and a lot of people like this idea and not just the ones here. i can see you reading this., itd be great to get an official opinion. ...fishing...

The mechanics of mining perhaps, but graphical changes will likely not happen. The art team probably has its hands pretty full getting those new ships polished off. |
