Yes WoW has an economy that's player driven when your most basic and some advanced items are bought from an NPC seller that never runs out. I remember when Ultima Online developer said on forums something like that designers were making bunch of ideas and then marketing team did research and picked "profitable" ideas. They got all sort of focus groups/surveys these days to collect data. This started to happen long after Richard Garriot had left the team who was the one with vision for that game. It's almost sad when comparing what UO used to be and what its today and it is starting to show in its subscription numbers.
