WoW has HISTORY - the whole of the Warcraft set of games, the lore...The world FEELS real because that history has been build up over a period of years and games, rather than just drawn up for this one game. As a result the world has a depth and a sense of reality to it that far excedes EvE. Wandering about looking at statues of people you have read about in the game lore, or heard about while playing the RTS series is like going to see Nelson's Column (only with less pigeon poo), you get a real sense of history.
i liked this. considering the fact that now eve has history like the sa ca war the rise and fall of xetic etc.
as for wow feeling real get a grip. its so unreal is unbelieveable at least there's a possibility that there are pod pilots fighting over star systems somewhere in the universe than what there is undead running around hacking and slashing.

eh, I think both parties are on weak ground when it comes to discussing the potential reality of either universe existing. :)
but as far as WoW's storyline goes, I reiterate (me=Guljan if you hadn't realised :P) it can't have any 'realism' because it exists independently of the players.
WoW players didn't create it, they can't change it. They can only follow it. Here, the official storyline is an undercurrent to what goes on between the large alliances - the way it should be imo.
The end result of what goes on in WoW is that players don't really exist insofar as how much they can affect their world. All that matters is that leveling your chars up to 60 (70 with the latest expansion! yay! Except...you have to pay for it! :P) and finding the best equipment.
And yeah, there is a satisfaction in that, but Diablo II has done it better, and its a game style suited far better to single player.
Pvp in WoW. You kill, you get killed, and at the end of the day, everyone goes home exactly the same condition they started in. It's like Valhalla, only with orcs, and without Valkyerie chickzors. :)
Here, every victory and loss means something, because despite insurance, or an updated clone, permanent losses will still be involved. And as nasty as that often is, it makes things far more satisfying, and a great deal more 'real'. -------------------------------------------------- Loyalty, Integrity, Honour. |

"Don't forget BlizzCon by the way! The developers where more then happy to talk about the game to their players. Have the EVE developers done something like this? :) "
~WoW player, Fletch.
EVE FanFest. Suffice to say, I think anyone participating will be able to tell you that talking about their game is not on par with social mingling and drinking with both GMs, Devs and volunteers. Course, that might just be my (skewed) viewpoint.
...Oh, and at least we don't get aids...Sorry, corrupted blood. That story still makes me chuckle when I think about it. You gotta admit, that was one rather catastrophical bug. What was done to undo it, though? Rollback, or some weird hotfix to alleviate it? :)

My personal favourites of that thread:
Quote: Personally I think Eve is a bad example, as it is a very small game, not that widely known with quite a core playerbase.
However, a better example would be Everquest 2. Now, Sony, who make EQ2, are widely known as being not the best when it comes to MMO's and service, however, when it comes to EQ2 this is very different.
Quote: Eve is a fantastic game, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The community was great, most likely due to the fact that if you called someone a retard on the forums, they could track you down and blast your corpse into space.
Quote: The huge difference is that the official forums are part of the Eve-online commuity and thus visited by most the active players. Where the offcial WoW forums act more like a vent for unhappy players and trolls, and probably have less than 30% of the total population read them.
He obviously hasn't seen the "Ships & Modules" forum then
Quote: The biggest difference between EVE and WoW is that EVE really has no PvE content
Apart from manufacturing, mission running, mining, complexes, hunting, R&D, trading and COSMOS, no, no PvE content -------------

WoW, land of Bind on Pickup items, is more market driven than Eve, where everything in the game is built by players. Hahahaha.
imo he wasn't talking about the ingame market, he meant the rl market :)

Edited by: Surrealz on 29/11/2005 23:10:05 Eve > WoW. Without a doubt.
This statement, mind you, is comming from someone who has close to 100 days played and has seen every aspect of WoW's "endgame". In my opinion WoW is one dimensional and is severely lacking in player interactivity. I just cancelled my WoW account, I think I'll be playing Eve from now on .

this was my favorite.
Quote: I played Eve when it first came out for 6 months and it was not a good example of an on-line game or customer service:
1) Released CD was a beta version that patched itself to the release version on first login. I still have this disk as evidence. 2) Uncontrolled PvP leading to mass grief playing and PKing, defended by these corporations as being pirate role play. It was so bad that players threatened to leave on mass and in game non-pk corporations wrote to the CCP CEO threatening to leave. 3) Bugs, bugs and more bugs. Very bad customer service that just told you to delete cache files and made no attempt to understand your problem; usually after three days wait for a reply. 4) CCP almost having to file for bankruptcy a few months after launch because so many players left annoyed with bugs and grief players. 5) CCP needing subscriptions to pay for finishing the game and getting rid of bugs. That is the development noney ran out, hence putting the beta version on the first for sale CDs 6) Forums that just descend into the "FU carebear, I L33t roxor roleplay pirate" versus the "you don't role play you just PK and grief" - pages and pages of this stuff. 7) Many promised features not released until many months after launch (agent missions, social skills around brokerage and trading for example) 8) Exploit bugs allowing scamming on the in game market, super weapons that one shotted all others to oblivion, cloning in game cash.
It took 18 months for CCP to get its act together and the game into some decent shape.
An example to follow, heaven forbid!
There is just so much wrong there all I can say is;

Edited by: High Sierra on 30/11/2005 13:44:25 Example:
WoW L1 Char = OMG must grind my way through bajillions of npc's so i can level up and turn my pvp flag off and have a hope of surviving! That will take me 6 months
EvE n00b = Started today, in a frigate. its got guns on. joined a corp who took me out with them to help kill a 2 year old character. They scrambled it and we all killed it together.
WoW thinks it competes with a game where a n00b can take on anyone from day 1? (please note WoW players this IS possible. its just that the 2 year old character has to be a bit dumb and the n00b has to be lucky)
WoW = grindfest of mind numbing proportions, no grindfest, no skillpoints. EvE = The thinking mans grindfest, cos theres more than one way to make money and your skill training isnt dependent on how many hours you spent pushing 3 buttons to kill NPC's this week.
EvE makes you think,WoW doesnt.
AS for the forums, we all get trolls - its just that they are mostly ignored on the EvE forums. (although I do know of EvE players who pay money to watch 2 forum trolls fight)
