Just now training for a barge and was looking at the strip miner 1 description. It says it wears out after awhile. Anyone know how long? I will be training for tech 2 ones and I don't think they degrade.

I take it you're referring to mining crystals, not strip miners?
Tech 1 crystals last a very long time (indefinitely?), but tech 2 crystals only last a few hours.

T1 should last about 20 h of contionous mining and T2 should last approx 5 h of contionous mining on average.

Yes the t1 (tech 1) crystals last a very long time. I am not sure how long; but after many days (week) of minig with a t1 it finally shattered on me.
Personally I do not thing the time and cost for the t2 is worth the small amount of time they seem to last.
Good luck on the barge and just a couple of helpful hints:
Train for the medium one first. Is a good starter until you get to the heavy barge.
Make sure you pick up the special processing skill for the ores you are mining, since trainig them to at least lvl three is required for using most of the t1 crystals in the modulated strip miners.

Don't know how long my Tech 1 crystals lasted for but it was longer than a weeks worth of mining!! But I agree with the 5hours for Tech2 crystals.
Follw the advice above, go for the Retriever first, use ur frigate for mining in the mean time (if ur minmatar use the Scythe, there is also another race that has mining bonus on it's frigate but I can't remember which one off hand). Train the processing skills and get to use the crystals as soon as you can. You won't regret it!

The other cruiser that gets a +20% mining yield bonus per cruiser lvl is the Caldari Osprey.. regarded by most of the mining community as the strongest mining cruiser.... I'll still love my Scythe tho, thank you very much!
