Hi.
I was looking at doing some ninja-mining in low-security space, where all the GOOD asteroids are. The question is... will I need special training and/or ship mods to identify them when I get there?
Thanks in advance...

No
The rare asteroids are small in size, some of them glow or are transparent (in beta arkonor and bistot glowed bright orange and green).
There are several places to see what the best ore is, but in terms of value per refine (with normal refining skills and NPC minerals prices) they are:
Arkonor Bistot Crokite Spodumain (vanished!?) Dark Ochre Gneiss Hedbergite Hemorphite Jaspet Kernite
and then we go to the old mainstay of
Omber Plagioclase Pyroxeres Scordite Veldspar

Thanks for the information. Do I need a laser upgrade from Miner I to do any good with the better ores, then?

In beta you didn't. There were rumors about something like that at the beginning of the launch, but I have seen nothing to indicate that.
A bit of advice though. If you are mining anything good, NEVER let the npc pirates get within 10km, because they _will_ warpscramble you, and don't get too close to the asteroids when you mine, because if you get stuck on them you are _screwed_.

Ninja mining will take an awefully lot of time doing it on bistot or crokite with a rather small cargo space. Timewise it is more profitable (but less fun) to simply mine lower grade ores since the demand for trit and pyer is still very high. Making mineral deals on large amounts of those minerals can be many time more profitable than hauling one load of crokite back to a station. Even in my battleship I cannot take enough minerals with me to make up a full batch of crokite unless I put on some cargo expanders which in turn will make ninja mining rather dangerous. To be slow means death is breathing down your neck. There are of course modules and such to circumvent these kinds of hinderances but it is still not very profitable to ninja mine the higher grade ores in reference to the time needed.

FYI, finding trit/pyer demaind at above NPC price is rare on the "open market", but many corps are out there that will pay 1.5 ISK per unit of delivered trit, and a number will even pay 2. (I just got some SWEET deals on miner 2s last night because I paid in minerals.) ---------------- Blue Screen of Death CEO Exodus Enterprises |
