What is the purpose of a Survey Scanner I for mining? It seems the Overview autoscanner does the same job faster and more clearly.

Survey scanner show how much ore is left in every roid. Not very usefull I agree but something at least.

Deep Core Miners, and Strip Miners have long cycle times and pull huge amounts out of every rock. But if the roid has only 10 units left in, after the cycle is over all you get is 10 units. Even if you *could* have pulled out a thousand had it been a big rock.
Scanners are useful for high-level miners to determine whether a given asteroid is worth their time or not.

Got it - so that makes more sense now. Not really useful at my level to be certain.

Trust me, when you're pulling in about 350 units of ore every minute with your lasers, you get REALLY ticked when the laser cycles, and you find yourself with one less roid and only nine units of ore.
All it takes to get to that much ore is an Osprey with Miner IIs, so it'll be something you're concerned with soon enough.

As time goes on, and you start using three or more mining lasers, it becomes useful to attack multiple roids at once. Unless you have a particularly excellent rock mining from four different sources is much more useful, as even in a cruiser it can mean you don't need to move your ship for twenty minutes or so.

*old man voice* "Back in my day, we didn't have any fancy 'Overview'. We had to look through a hole poked in the side of our ship to see what an asteroid looked like!"
I think the mineral scanner is a hold over of equipment from the 'olden days'. There was no overview and you had to use the scanner just to see what rocks contained what.
I played back after beta for a while, but only recently came back (love it). I still use the mineral scanner, but to tell how long I have before a rock is "popped" so I can be ready to move on to the next one. They are not really necessary though, except for large scale miners as stated by the poster above.

As others have stated it is really only useful when you move to strip miners and a mining barge or you have a ton of normal mining lasers. |

In empire, I can't really see why anyone would use it outside of a barge.
In 0.0, if you're mining with a group, it is vital for scouting belts. Nothing sucks worse than getting a tank setup, warping all your miners in, and finding out there's only 500 units in the good rocks. Founder and CEO TribalWar, Inc. |

You dont need a scanner for that, you can use the asteroid radius info to get an idea -guess- of how fat the roids are.
For example. A Crokite roid with a radius of 98 is meager a Crokite roid with a radius of 123 is FAT
The ideal values change from ore type to ore type. (A 98 radiusm mercoxite roid is normal, and good, for example)

Has anyone made a list of decent raduos levels for types of riods? "RAWR" is my keyword, and also my second language |
