I couldn't find this info in the Ship Setup Sticky, sorry. While I was desperately hoping that my Industrial would accommodate TWO Miner IIs in the Hi-Slots, it won't. So, I have a Miner II and a ____________? (suggestions?) It won't fit another turret/launcher module. Perhaps a Smartbomb? I don't need Shield Trans equipment as a solo miner. Any suggestions to how folks have tricked out their Mammoths, especially the Hi-Slots, would be much appreciated. Thanks and Happy Hauling!

Cloaking device maybe? Or just use a real ship for mining...

yeah... I suggest keeping the mammoth purely for hauling. Get a scythe and mine in that, dumping the ore into a cargo can, and then come pick it up with the Mammoth.
(with cruiser IV a scythe mines as if it had 5.4 mining lasers)

yes, indeed. Mining strategies aside, though, I'd still like to hear about potential uses for that other hi-slot on the Mammoth. Thanks!

A smart bomb maybe, or cap-boost thingy? Or you could leave it blank and save the cpu/power for a mid/lo module you want. |

The only reason to use a hauler for mining is if your AFK mining. Which means you'll be in very high security space, which means it doen't really matter what you put in that other high slot. A cloak would be the only possible item that might be of some limited use from time to time, but even that is rather doubtful.

Lol sarmaul, that may be one of the most organized, simple and effective posts I have seen in a long time. By the way, I recommend an energy transfer mod and a miner...might as well.

thanks for all the posts - I realize the absurdity of the Mammoth-As-Mining-Barge, but I'm just tryin' to get my bank on in EvE and still be able to manage my RL...
In any case, I have found that, down to about 0.7 space, a Small Proton Smartbomb I in the other hi-slot will make the pests go away and make approx 30-80k in Rat Gravy extra ISK per run.
Small Nosferatu I is also effective but only dampens the Rat's effectiveness, not removing it from the stage entirely as with the SB.
IMHO, Mammoth is a Noobly Money Maker, capable of delving into at least 0.7 mining space on it's own.

I would be extremely careful about that smartbomb, lest you hit someone's secure can and get Concordokened.
As for mining in the Mamoth, for a new character just starting out, it is a decent enough stepping stone before a cruiser. Basically, the mining frigates with large enough holds for mining to hold can only mount 1x Miner II/2x Miner I, and the frigates that can mount 2x Miner II's have to jet can mine (which gets you robbed in the areas you would mine in a frigate).
As for dealing with the rats, pack a light shield tank and simply avoid them. The beauty of indy mining, is that you aren't tied to a single location the way you are if you're using one of the jet can frigates, or even a cruiser. You simply nibble a little here and there for the next four-five hours, or until you get bored, which ever comes first.
When I was mining up for my first cruiser (back when dionsaurs ruled the earth and cruise missiles still fit in standard launchers), that's pretty much what I did, though I was using a Bestower, and in a 0.5 system.
It's far better than spending 20m trying to fit a heap of named mining lasers on a Destroyer, that's certain.

that IS interesting - I knew to be careful of SB range when other PC ships were too close but their deployable property as well? didn't know that, thanks. does that include jetcans as well? Probably. Topic for another thread -

Atm I use the high slot for a miner2 while afk mining in .9 or 1.0 space while afk.
After RMR you'll prolly want a tractor beam in there.

cloaker is awesome if hauling. You can sit in belt cloaked til you need to pick up a can for someone. Keeps the npc's off of you and you can be 3k away from can. As well, a small remote repair is good if people are using drones to fight the npcs. You can repair their armor.
I often fit a 250 rail and a remote repair on my iteron (main char is mainly combat/hauler, this one is a miner) when hauling for a mining op. This makes your ship very useful to the mining op. You can help kill npcs from a good distance, then repair the drones and the people mining if they take armor damage. The people mining can fit an extra mining laser instead of a RARU.
A smartbomb is _useless_ on a hauler in empire because you might destroy drones with it, and if you nick someone or something that's not in your corp (like the thousands of secure cans), Concord will blow up your hauler. Smartbombs in empire are a very very very bad thing.
The only type of mining that's viable in a hauler is AFK mining in 1.0 systems while you watch football, or if you have adequate cover on the op, you can mine a little too. It's actually more trouble than it's worth.

I'll be. When did the Mammoth get a turret??
Anyway, for mining minmatar your best bet is the Vigil. Nice size cargo, room for a few lasers with skills, and it can hold drones for defence. That should get you to mining scordite hopefully \o/ ____ If your not dyin' your not tryin'. |

A whole fleet of rats must regret that. Oh and a certain pod. :)
