Sorry if this has been asked before, I did some research on my own and I just can't figure it out.
I'm about to buy my first cruiser, either a Caracal or a Moa. When I told all of my friends I wanted a Moa they all said "ewwwww get a Caracal instead" but didn't explain their reasoning. Is there something I'm missing?
What are the benefits of each ship over each other? I fly a Merlin right now and like hovering back at around 15km or so using iridium charges on 2 125mm gatling railguns and 2 standard launchers using bloodclaws and flamebursts. What sort of attack type would I have to use with a caracal or moa?
It seems to me the Moa is far better equipped for combat than the Caracal, I mean it has more slots in general, more power, more cpu, more hp, more shield, more hull, more *everything* and its only slightly slower.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me!

Edited by: Tanya Kovacs on 05/12/2005 18:04:03 Caracal = missileboat (bonuses, 5x launcher, 2x gun) Moa = gunboat (bonuses, 2x launcher, 4x gun)
The problem is: whoever you ask, everybody tells you the whole opposite of the other. One says: missiles are crap, other says: missiles are great. It's a mess It really depends on the style you prefer. And it's makes a difference if you are missionrunner or on pvp.

Moa: Ship where you will be using guns AND launchers like the merlin. You will outfit it either for ~50km out snipper with long range hybrid amo and heavy missiles or "close in" ~20km with shorter range higher damage hybrid and assault missle launchers. Both setups work well for level 2 missions. The close range setup kills faster but you will need to tnak more and have better skills then the long range setup. Make sure to match range for your guns and missiles.
Caracal: The missle spammer. It tankes poorly so the goal here is NOT to get hit. Its bonuses are missile range and damage (kenetic) so you load heavy launchers with kenetic. You warp in, turn around, and get as far away from your enemy as posible, but still in heavy range (~70km with mediocre skills). Spam away, collect loot. You dont get hit as much as a Moa since you are out of range of most ships after the initial "running away". Loot collection can be a pain as you have to travel all the way back. Pre RMR patch Caracalswill do less damage than a Moa with mediocre skills, but they should be about even post patch.
Which should you fly? Depends on your playstyle. Neither are "in your face" cruisers like a pulse laser maller might be. But the play styles ARE different so pick the one that suits you.

Edited by: Hugh Ruka on 05/12/2005 18:45:40 this depends on your future plans. if you are going for a HAC/AF/BS ? turret or missile based ?
if you choose mainly turrets (harpy, eagle ...) go for the Moa if you choose missiles (cerberus, raven ...) go for the Caracal
Each of them is different. Also the Moa is not a pure turret ship, so you have to train at least some missiles. The Ferox BC is again a hybrid, with bonus for turrets.
I fly a Caracal cos I like missiles ... I don't say it's better, I just like missiles more :)
TIP: if you go hybrid turrets, you have a better position, because you can switch to gallente ships with little training. ------------------------------ Removed due to offensive content - Laqum

Thanks guys, that really helps. I'm not sure which I prefer more. I like being close but not super close, but I can also say that having to travel 70-100km to get loot in a slow cruiser would be really annoying. I do a lot of missions right now but will definitely PvP in the future.
Is there any particular one which is considered better for PvP? I kind of like the hybrid missile/turret playstyle, then again theres something to be said for getting a Caracal right now instead of a Moa in 4-5 days (money is still an issue since I'm new). Honestly I'm starting to think that maybe another race's cruisers would be better for me, perhaps Minmatar or something. I hate traveling slow.

Caracal for lvl 2 missions with assault launchers works well, heavies are ok but on frigs you wont do very good DPS.
However if you ever help out on lvl 3-4 missions, a Caracal is better. hitting stuff from 50-70km away is very useful. I used a caracal with under 100k sps in missiles to do lvl 2s. I now use a Harpy, and its been hard getting used to being 20km away, but on the bright side 4 150mm t2 rails with AM >>>>> Caracal DPS. ------------------------------------

Therefore 1Bill isk costs you $129.50.

Bear in mind the Moa is getting one of it's bonuses changed in the next patch:
Quote: Shield boost bonus changed to 5% shield resists per level
The Caracal is also getting an extra mid slot after the patch.
The only problem with the Caracal I can think of is that it's as frail as an old woman, it's much better at raining damage from 50km+ (I forget the exact range).

Both ships can be extremely fun to use. Which ship have you been using up until now? If you have missle skills trained up, Cara. Gunnery, Moa then. Go with your strengths to start.
Then you can train up the skills for the other ship. GL and have fun. _______________________________________________ Making Miracles, One pod at a time |

You will not do this for long (when running missions). Don't collect the drifting cans, but bookmark some of them. Return to base, report back to agent, jump in a fast hauler and warp to your bookmark and catch the stuff :)

I just started running lvl 2's with my Moa and am loving it. I had been using my Cormorant (destroyer) for ever to do lvl 1's and a couple lvl 2's. I have trained up the gunnery/missile skill to the same lvl accross the board. Some I am just a good with the missile as I am with the rails. Current setup: 4 x 250mm (iron/iridium), 2 x Name assault lanchers. I can get about 60km with the rails and about 35k with missiles. Use the rails to bring the stuff in and help clean up with missiles. I also have mag enhancer for the rails to increas fire rate and dmg. I also have 3 drones loaded to help with fast close in guys. I have also trained up a bunch of energy/shield skills so I can tank a bit. I have to active hardeners on the rig (EM & Therm), med shield booster. Seems to be working well so far, but I have had to warp out a couple of time when the deadspace puts you right in the mist of the NPC's. But even with that I finish off 3-5 of them and come back for clean up.
I agree that if you are going missile then Caracal is better, rails go with the Moa.
Hope that helps out, since I am having bunch of fun in the Moa too. Even went down to some 0.4 space and hunted a couple 40k+ rats. That was fun too.
