Just found my first ever Ore Site (new to this exploration lark).
Went to pick up my Venture, started mining and got attacked by Serpentis.
Seems pretty pointless, just needed to hit shield booster every 30 secs whilst leaving low level Serpentis to attack and I can mine to my hearts content.
Tackled this in solo - I guess to do anything else would require hitting this site with a combat ship and a mining vessel - Is that right?
Or am I missing something?
Hello to everyone on the forum by the way :) Paulos Adamson

As a further note - just sold the ore (Silvery Omber).
Not got great refining at the mo so tend to find I get a better return just selling.
I got less than Condensed Scordite!
Won't bother following through on one of these next time... Paulos Adamson

Omber is indeed not that valuable at the moment. But others like hedbergite are worth quite something. You just have to pick the right sites.
You can carry light scout drones in your venture dronebay. You can field 2 scout drones.. They will be able to kill the rats who spawn in the mining belts. They also spawn in the normal mining belts, don't afk their either. In .9 and 1.0 systems there are no rats, I believe. |

If you are serious about getting the most money out of what you mine, there are various sites that you can access through the in game browser that will show you the current market trends. This can help you decide if you want to just sell the raw ore or worry about building up skills/standing to refine it and sell the minerals. But yes, sometimes it's better to just sell the ore.
As mentioned, drones will help keep rats off of you while you mine.
For the most part, you probably won't get much extra from the mining anomalies in high sec unless you grab something better than Omber. For that reason, I tend to just stick to normal belts in low population systems. You can still check the sites and if they aren't already tapped out (which they normally are when I look) maybe see about getting some of the better ore there while you can. |

Thanks Guys
Would two scout drones be able to handle the rats in later waves?
It is my understanding that they get tougher as you destroy them (at least my experience at combat sites) - would I not cause myself more problems by destroying the wimps?
I know it's kinda like cheating but just letting the guys with pea shooters have a pop at me without escalating the situation seemed a good way to go - especially as I didn't have combat drones loaded ;)
Either way, I will definitely check the markets before I bother with ore sites again - I don't know why I didn't think to do that myself, guess I thought it's in an anomaly it must be special!!! Paulos Adamson

Belt rats in high sec are not like the rats in combat sites. Train Drones and Light Scout Drones and keep two of them with you in your Venture's drone bay. I'd advise you to use your rig slots to put in a shield rig (train Jury Rigging and Shield Rigging) along with your shield booster in your mid slot, and you'll be good to go. There are also skills you can train that will help your passive shield skills - Shield Operation, Shield Management etc.
Rats in 0.5 systems can be nasty and I suggest you avoid those systems. You can get the same asteroid spawns in 0.6 systems and your Venture will thank you for it. ;)

Jus to add to the above. If you kill the belt rats they do not spawn new waves. Its mostly just one wave and thats it. Though after a while there can just be a new spawn of belt rats. The groups vary in size too.. sometimes you get 1 and in 0.5 you get 4 sometimes. 4 can be a bit tricky but you should be able to handle up to 3 npcs in your venture. Might need to train a few drone skills, so if you want to play safe just stay in the higher security systems. |

Luckily I've been training drone skills for my combat ship - already got some good skill levels there.
Good to know they don't respawn - Will swap my mining drones for combat drones going forwards.

The rats you get in ore anomalies are the same type as you get in the asteroid belts of the system that the anomaly is in.
2 hobs should be able to handle them right down to 0.5. |

Also try this one. You could also try low sec. The ore anoms out here can give good null sec ores... you do need to be mindful of the locals but there are lots of empty systems & the ventures are slippery little bastards |

Mining drones are never worth their space. Once you get in a barge, three scout drones and two salvagers fills out nicely. |

Is it worth using Salvaging drones? GÇ£No man ought to commit his life into the hands of that Physician, who is ignorant of Astrologic: because he is a Physician of no value.GÇ¥ - Nicholas Culpeper |

Well, you're not using up ore bay space up with what they salvage. And some T1 salvage isn't bad. Steve Ronuken for CSM 9!-á I'm starting early :) Handy tools and an SDE conversion Twitter: @fuzzysteve on Twitter |
