speak for yourself but my family enjoys chrustmas as a tiem to get together sure its comerricalized but there nothing to beat your family all being there on the day.
Your family has a traditional gathering that occurs on a certain day. But would this tradition not occur without the Christmas theme? Could it not happen, on say, the day your Grandfather married?

So? How is our fun hurting you? You are just upset that you choose, or possibly its not even your place to choose, not to celebrate christmas. You dont get to eat good food like the rest of us? Why bring this up less you are actually feeling left out. Alot of people dont get to be with their family but still make the best of it. My dad is in Afghanistan atm and my mom is in LA. not gonna be with either of them for christmas. But I'm still gonna be with friends, my brother, and his wife. Even if I wasnt having dinner with them I'd still be able to find somethin to do. And TBH theres not really much religion in purely giving gifts and eating dinner with friends and family. How, in any way, is that converting to a religion? Is there something in your religion that prevents you from having dinner with friends and giving presents and enjoying pretty lights and a tree?
Also, you said that you are unable to conduct business for around a week. Well take that time and do some reflecting... I work at an elementry school and we have over 70 families at the moment where we are setting up christmas dinners for and obtaining sponsors to help with gifts for their children. If you have nothing to do for christmas week, volunteer. Even if you beleive christmas is to affiliated with religion to celebrate it in any fashion, just think of the people who you could at least help celebrate it. Kindness is not a doctrine of faith, its a doctrine of humanity.

Christmas is nothing but a celecration of the winter solstice. It was co-opted from the Roman holiday of the Saturnalia. This holiday was celebrated by so many Christians that it was adopted by the Church and surreptitiously named Christmas.
It has an equivalent among almost every other culture, like Yule for the Celts. So, yes, even if not everyone is a Christian, and Christianity didn't exist, it would still be the Holiday Season.

Originally by: Cadela Fria Look it's this simple, EVE is loaded with religion as it is..and thats great, makes for a much more realistic universe to play in..creates flavour and makes for good roleplaying/events whatever. I'm not religious myself and I'm not stupid enough to be offended.
Besides, christmas rocks, everyone should celebrate it, you get lots of good food, presents, you are together with the family and forget all your troubles for one day..plus, christmas was originally like..a pagan thing I think..called "Yule" or something...can't remember how it goes, but who cares????? christmas is great, so stop worrying about the details and eat some more and open a few more presents dammit!.
In game religion | out of game religion.
And I don't get any special food, I'm not visiting my family and it's a pain in the ass because I can't contact people about my freelance work for a week+
Oh and the shops are closed.
Meh.
Sounds like a personal problem to me.

Might I suggest presuading your family to take up the holiday not as a religious observance but as a time of togetherness? Even if you don't, there's still nothing stopping you from visiting your folks during this time of year. -Wrayeth

I don't give a damn about what people think about Christmas. I am a father of 2 kids (7 & 3), and so in my house Christmas is pretty magical (unless you are my wallet).
However, Eve is a game set thousands of years in the future. All ties with Earth have long since been lost, the very concept of a true homeworld a mere myth. That is why festivities should be kept out of Eve. The jarring juxtaposition does nothing but ruin any chance of immersion.
Please, please, keep Eve Christmas free. ______________________________________________

The term Christmas has been battered about and shortened to X-mas as the first whack at political correctness years ago.
Actually, X-Mas is quite ancient. X is the first letter of "Christ" in ancient greek. X was used often in place of "Christ" while Christianity was underground, especially because of the cross-motif of the letter.
I don't have the relevant dates handy for the first known use of "X-Mas", but it was a very, very long time ago and had nothing to do with political correctness.

It still is the holiday season even if you do not celebrate christmas or other religious based celebrations. The reason being is you still celebrate New Years which is completely a secular holiday.

Re Avon: (seems I reply to you a lot these days.)
If the concept of christmas, or some holiday has fallen around this time of year since before the concept of christianity was a twinkle in anyone's eye. What is to say that the factions in eve would not have such a day? Granted and I agree its arguable that it should be on a different day but really come on now to say there should be NO holidays at all is a little rediculous and it removes some realism from the different races.
It would be nice to see things like Emporer Day (Amarr), or Day of Enslavement (Minmatar day of mourning, falls on emporer day?), Day of Liberation (Caldari split from Gallente Federation), and Get Really Drunk on Spiked Quafe and do Quesionalbe Things Day (Gallente Holiday just because).
Also Santa and other Christmas Icons could still be incorperated ingame because yeah we've been seperated for a long time but we still know something about rituals that cavemen did from evidence they left behind to say that the second the eve gate closed all knowledge from earth would be lost is simply anthropologically incorrect.

what you think emporer day is gonna be fun? Pfft we go around and kiss his ring, thats our holiday and we have a feast in his honor.
Knowing the matari theyd probably have a feast in the honor of fallen heros then get drunk decide to shoot some amarrians and start a war :p

I am completely non-religious in all forms, for various reasons. Mainly because of attitudes that prevail in this thread about "OMGXMASCHRISTIANNONONOCANTFORCEITONME" crapola, but I've been to places and seen exactly what racial/religious prejudice can do to people...both Christian, Muslim and just plain psychos.
However, as a father of two children, I'm going to throw the tree up, pretend that Father Christmas is real, and really enjoy some time with my kids. I work far too hard and long throughout the year, and I'll be glad to have some time off with no worries.
Then on New Years Eve, watch Leeds Utd tear Hull City a new a-hole and get drunk.
Thats what I call a holiday season. Chimaera Pact Minister For Propaganda Rovers Chronicles

Edited by: Uther Doull on 10/12/2005 13:13:04 i'm an atheaist and i'm religious about it :P but i still celebrate christmass with my family, and i would go nuts if my boss made me work on christmass... it's just a cultural thing and a nice one for a change...
to me the only thing 'christian' in christmass is the name, besides the whole thing is pagan anyway with the date and tree and all, i mean christ wasn't even born on christmass day (heck they don't even know precisely on what day or even what year it was) it's just one of the many pagan ways incorporated into christianity to make it easier for the germanic tribes to convert to it now try and 'reason' your way out of that :P
but ppl crying over the fact that they're not christian and thus want nothing to do with it need to get a reality check... if you're not christian just celebrate the fact that you're off work and spend time with friends/family

I really hate the idea of having any seasonal crap in the game. It's bad enough that we have this crap shoved in our faces everywhere we look for almost two months of the year without having it in Eve too.
Oh and by the way kids, Santa Claus doesn't exist!
There, I've said it. Now carry on.

It costs me nothing and makes them feel good. And that makes me feel good.
Merry Christmas all.
