It has come to my attention that Freighters do not actually drop loot cans at all, this is by design. The idea being that if a freighter was destroyed that was full of shuttles or something similar it would basically crash a node. This is a valid concern but I have to disagree with the solution. Rather than simply prevent any loot from dropping and turning freighters into a giant grief tool there should be some way to recover their cargo.
A possible solution would be to have freighters drop a "Freighter cargo can" or a "Freighter hulk" which could possibly be recovered by another freighter. ALL cargo fromt the freighter sould drop into the "hulk" including ships, if the player looting the hulk wanted to take one of the ships there would be an option to "extract ship" which would assemble and launch the ship into space. This solves the problem of the freighter becoming a "lag bomb" and allows for the freighter owner to recover their cargo if the ship is lost and the attackers can be driven away.
If freighters dont drop loot then everyone loses, they simply become a giant tool for griefing the freighter pilot and little can be gained by killing them.

This is pure genius .. although you forgot to mention the 'spacewalk salvage' skill for extracting and flying off in packaged ships

I totally have to agree. While I would enjoy a freighter raining out ships, I have no problem with it simply dropping a freighter husk.

Yes, there could be skills to access the freighter hulk as well as possibly high hitpoints on the hulk to prevent the attackers from simply popping it to prevent the owner from getting the cargo.

No to date we've killed four freighters and none have dropped cans, none have been FIX freighters to my knowledge.

I don't like it. It gives incentive for people to bother with trying to kill them. If you make it so a freighter gives you materials in exchange for it's destruction, then every 1 month old pirate will be gunning for them every time one enters .5> space.

They are already gunned for, plus this system gives you a change to get your stuff back if you lose the ship, it's win-win.

never actually thought about the 'lag bomb' - but it does make sense.
weirda was always under the impression that, while expensive, logistically the ability to get stuff out of a freighter without a station would outweigh the cost of freighter. getting anything at all out of a freighter in space (even if you have to destroy it) would circumvent the specific mechanic that they wanted to prohibit freighters from having...
make sense?
while you idea is good - having that NOTHING would be destroyed, you would just pop youself and have 10 bs (or whatever you fit - weirda don't fly them) sitting and waiting for you fleet as backup... this is not what they want. they want titans for this. _____________ Thread Killer Give Assault Ship their Missing Bonus in RMR! <END TRANSMISSION> |

You can eject cargo from a freighter, you just can't scoop it. In addition the freighter hulk could have a limited life so it's not abused.

The last thing I think a freighter pilot would want is someone getting anything out of their lost ship. The only satisfaction and solace they probably have considering they're flying a billion credit ship that can only move from one place to another at the pace of a very determined slug.
If your proposal would promote more organization and less griefing among pirates, it might be worth while. I doubt it though, as it'd probably only create a new kind of pirate/alt combo; the ganker and the freighter pilot.

Wesley, I am by no stretch of the imagination a pirate... but you do have to remember pirates are a viable (indeed essential) part of this game. They deserve the oportunity for a "big score" once in awhile. Of course, in many cases they might be frustrated at their lack of ability to capitalize on it if the bulk or quantity of items on the freighter prohibited them for getting very much of it before other scavengers swept in, or the original pilot came back with friends to reclaim it.
That said, the "lag bomb" is a valid game mechanic concern which probably has a bit to do with the coded maximum size of jetison cans. If this solution, or one similar, would work and allow freighter loot to be dropped then I am all for it.
And yes, my corporation does have freighters that could fall prey to piracy

To expand on Wesley's idea here, I should note that it is entirely unfair that ships drop loot at all. It basically encourages pirates to be pirates. I think my boy Wesley here would agree that having ships explode and dropping "Pirate Bombs" would be the ideal solution, mainly because it would kill pirates and discourage them from pirating. The problem with pirates is piracy, not so much the pirates themselves. Levin, stop being a pirate. ----------------------------------------------

Unfortunately, neither candy nor wesley seem to have realised that piracy is a valid game career. One of the advantaged of eve is that you can (supposedly) do anything. So you can't say OMGIHATEPIRATESREMOVETHEMONEONEONE. You have to be fair- what if the pirates wanted it so that you can shoot people anywhere? That wouldn't be fair either, so it's not going to happen. Being fair, freighter cans are a good idea. Pretty much everything else drops loot when you blast it in low sec- there's no RP reason why freighters should be exempt from this rule. There's just the problem of avoiding lag bombs and Levin has come up with an excellent solution, so...

There are pirates in EvE?
Freighter's should drop something. Seems like CCP could decrease the amount of stuff that survives (percentage ?) if the lag spike is what is so scary. Wait. There's lag in EvE?

I don't mind piracy. I do however mind that you want to make one of the most expensive and defenseless ships in the game also potentionally the most rewarding to destroy.
It's big, heavy, and slow, with several hundred thousand unhardened hps as it's only defense. A frigate given enough time could destroy one.
You might as well make them automated ships for all the grief a human pilot would have to endure piloting one.

Big rewards (isk) should equal some risk. Anyone that can afford a billion isk ship should be able to afford an escort in low sec systems.

Yes your right a hundred thousand hitpoints and a frig doing 100 hp dmg/sec could rip it to shreds in just a mere 16 minutes. We've got ppl logging off in the first 10 seconds of fights.

True. But anyone with half a brain will aim to prevent ANYTHING from having enough time to destroy one. If you have a freighter, you should take precautions- get an escort if you're in a corp, go through secure space if you aren't.

It would be awesome if all capital ships would blow up to leave a ship hulk in space (essentially a cargo container the size of a battleship instead of a can the size of a Tristan) since having a huge ship blow up to a tiny container is... anti-climax.
Space hulks would, of course, be interactable by freighters (and maybe freighters only, which would make it interesting come RMR and can ownership) in order to salvage any larger pieces in them.

I think it would be better if the hulk was something that could be looted by anyone, limiting it to freighter pilots would destroy the motivation for pirates to get the loot, which is not a good idea. If a normal indy can carry the cargo and ships can be ejected into space then the killers can get some loot but only what they manage to haul off before someone in a bigger hauler comes in to take the erst.

make them drop their cargo but then push the shields to the point that no single pirate could ever pop one without something like 4 other buddies.

I have seen a freighter being escorted through low security space on more than one occasion by corp and alliance members. The cost of a freighter and its contents make it a very high risk task and also high reward when you get to your destination. This encourages teamplay and could even give rise to another viable game occupation as convoys could be a common sight and convoy escort could become a player passtime and even a corp activity. The ravaged hulks of unfortunate freighters caught unprotected in space could serve as a reminder to all that there are people out there who have taken it upon themselves to act as the "privateres" that have existed in all areas of the world and still exist to this day in some of the more lawless areas. It makes no sense that something that can carry so much loot should drop none at all, immagine the battle between pirate and escort groups to ensure safe passage of a freighter through low security space, or even protecting the damaged hulk from looters post destruction, I think that without dropped loot this will not happen, pirates will just not bother to attack a protected freighter and so it will go on unmollested which is a shame as I feel this would add value to the game and also build teamplay opportunities. what about cargo insurance, is this an option, after all, the pirate activities on the indian ocean and foul weather off the cape was the drive for the orrigin of the entire insurance industry, we could have investment oppertunities and trade cartells....the list goes on. Loot loot, we need loot. Pirates, foul scum of the earth though they may be are an essential part of the game, like the elk needs the wolf, up with pirates, now where's my gun

They are pretty tough as-is, a single ship would have a hard time killnig one in lowsec without getting killed by players.

the way it is I don't think even a gankageddon could take down a freighter before the freighters ship disapears from logging
