Hello, I recently got myself a covetor, and I was wondering how successful others have been mining solo in .4 or lower space. I have 5 heavy attack drones on it. Can the drones kill the rat spawns there? If not is it easy to warp away from the rats?

I doubt it. I really do. Barges can't tank worth crap. Even if you could handle pirate spawns, you're still an easy target for PC pirates, who would just love to pop your barge, make off with your mods, and likely pod you too.

how are you fitting 5 heavy drones on it? they dont fit
anyway in a .4 I have had better luck with med drones but maybe thats just me.
If your not worried about player pirates and you have good hull and armor skills then 1 hardner specific to the rats your encountering and 1 small armor repair 2 and 1 cap recharger in mid works pretty good.
Your alot safer with even a cruiser using a remote armor repairer on it and on the covetor using 2 hardners. but yah you can make it on your own as well it just gets spookie from time to time.

If you do you better be aligned to a SS and fit a WCS in the low. A player pirate in a tier 4 frig would eat you up. Most cruisers would take you down in about 10 secs, probably even faster that you could get enough speed to warp out.

I wouldn't recommend it at all. You're welcome to try it, but stick to the completely empty systems, fit a WCS, and be prepared to lose it all. You're better off waiting for the T2 barges in RMR. They'll have better resistances and more midslots to tank better.

Well I will say it again it's not really super hard and completely doable only thing to wory about is player pirates but they are typically easy to watch for on local see them in local warp to safe spot not to hard there.
As far as a stab personally I say thats horrable idea. Most any pirates worth his weight in salt is gonna have to dead before he would need to lock you down in the first place.

I've mined successfully solo several times in .1 space using a covetor. And done it for hours on end. Now either I was extremely luck those 20 times or it's possible. Worrying about PC pirates is always the case whether or not you're in a Battleship or Barge, so thats a horrible excuse. No matter what setup you use someone somewhere will be able to take you down. So the main concern I see is dealing with the belt rats. I agree that medium drones are the way to go, flying 6 of them and two lights is what I use. The lights I leave out orbiting me always and as rats usualy do, they get locked first. While my decoys (warriors) orbit the biggest ship. I use my mediums to take out the ships most likely to hit the warriors and work my way up. Now I've never mined in Caldari low sec, so missile spammers which always hit could prove a problem to my setup. Just don't be afraid to lose your ship a few times and try something different.
If you're not flying with Hippies, you're not having FUN. |

Hmmm... Solo is a bit risky but it's doable. I've mined in Mamet (ended in a pod due to PK) a few times and it's doable, as long as you warp fast. I recommend you to set some SS in an inty, and also to BM some roids of your interest.
I generally put a good nanofiber in a low, along with a repairer. IMHO solo mining in lowsec with barges will become more profitable with RMR, with mining cycles reduction. Until there, BS solo-mining is safer, and faster.

Just be careful that post-patch scramblers will be found in 0.1-0.3 so you may need to fit a stab in case of a tough npc spawn.

I used to mine in deep 0.0 alone.. the rate was.. at 100 mil i would loose a barge :) Now seriously u can but u have to be aligned and if u see someone spooky in local then warp to ss. I used a cruiser to clear the belts, then mine ..if rats would appear i would warp to my safe where the trusty cruiser was w8ing, change ship and clear the belt with it... on and on and on and...u get the pic. The problem was that if a bs spawn came i couldn't clear the belt in my cruiser.. lost a few cans of crok this way. Hope it helped. |

If you are mining in low sec have support to take the rats out/tank and for protection from other players. Otherwise mining in a barge may be successful for a bit, but you WILL lose it eventually.

I've got an idea--an idea so smart that my head would explode if I even began to know what I'm talking about

Ah, but the questions isn't so much whether you'll lose it, as whether a barge every so often counts as 'acceptable losses' for the amount of additional cash you make.
If you're careful, then you won't lose often, and you will make more. If only because the belts aren't totally wiped out daily. (Although check the market values of what you're mining, some things like Jaspet are often overtaken by 'high sec' ores like Omber and Kernite) -- Complaining about the PvPers and Pirates in EVE is like complaining about the mines in Minesweeper. |

Get a pass to a low sec area; get a friend or 5 to either tank, haul or help mine, and kaplow! 16mill a share. Friends Forever |

It'll be cheaper to lose a Barge than a Battleship, but if you really want to make cash, join an alliance and mine in 0.0

AK.
