Being a part of this universe for a few months and feeling small yet noticable changes to the world (falling low end mineral prices, T2 impact) I wonder what the game was lets say 2 years ago.
What are the most profound differences from days back when 2k users online were considered a record? How the feel of the game has changed?

What first comes to my mind is the market interface. The tools available now are incredible.
In the beginning there only was an item list and a map. Red and green dots indicating negative and positive prices. One had to actualy fly to the target system and there search the map again for which station had the demand/supply. 60j/day in vast empty empire space.

Edited by: Reebo77 on 12/12/2005 21:15:53 you could fire on someone in empire space with no concord and no sentry guns life was fun
when a million isk was alot of money!
when cruisers where like the UBER ships and when i first saw one my jaw dropped to the floor.
mining ankor in a 0.4 and they had battleship spawns to come kill you.
NPC bounties where half what they are now.
when killing 1 frig gave you a big sec boost and u could kill a few npc's and be over 1.0 in a day
when loot tables where really bad and u got silly drops, oh wait we still got that
man i miss it all

Just a few things that spring to mind:
Ninja mining Arkonor and Bistot in Empire and getting paid 1024 for Zydrine and 4096 for Megacyte by NPC corps.
No autopilot, and then when the 1st version came out typing "/autopilot on" in chat to get it going.
No highways of any kind, inter regional travel was a real journey.
Very early on CCP added NPC spawns to the gates in lower sec empire, we were all only in frigates at the time and the NPCs were massive cruisers. They toned it down a day or 2 later because no one could move about.
Agents used to be totally useless, unless you were a pirate and could bribe one to boost your security status.
Kestrels firing 4 cruise missiles at once and killing indys in a single volley.
Cruisers firing torpedoes that did splash damage.
Being able to stack modules without a penalty for each additional module. ---------

The number of people I see in space. Back then almost every 0.7 and under had no one in it. You could rat in a 0.4 and not see someone in local for days..even people passing thru.
When isk meant more. Making 1M isk was a milestone, it was an achivement. I seriously still remember having my first 1M after I bought everything I needed, and for that matter my first 2M.

Uber shield-tanked scorp and shield-tanked apocs due to no shield boost penalty on cap relays.
Jump-in points: carnage!
NPC chaining when you could get it going really fast.
Biggest NPC was 50k and the cruisers scrambled you.

Right after RMR is released, let's have a "Gemini" week on Sisi, all the skills we have now but with Gemini ships/mods, code base, etc

More seriously ? The agme has improved massively by filling in the blanks between the original content as well as improving on that original content.
However, I must say that the cost of success if becoming mroe and more evident as far as dilution of the community goes. Noise gets to drown out the music more and more in this one. _______________________________________________

I would *love* to see the forum whiners get dropped int a eve version 1.0 shard just for a day or two... and see them say it's not improved.
I arrived a little under 2 years ago. I remember how making the first million was such a huge milestone. hitting 10 million, that was a proud moment... and my corp getting thier first battleship, such a big thing. the inflation rate has always surprised me, to look in-game now and see things for twice the price they were.
and, how much smaller it all was. 100 in a system? madness it'd never nappen. in 0.7's and 5 people was busy. 0.4 with more than two was incredible.
ahh. fun times, but don;t ever say it was a better game, compared to now.

Hey, I don't sing much, I'm more like one of them old guys in the balcony at the muppet show. I comment and grumble :p
What i mean is that less forum users are aware of what they are talking about these days. It's less about sharing and gathering information nowadays then it is about complaining and trying to get your way.
And of course, having probably spent more time browsing here then actually playing the game, I think of this first of all when asked the topic question _______________________________________________

I started back in may 03, man was it bad. had to walk to school 5 miles in the snow, uphill...both ways.
seriously, making my first million was a huge acheivement. After you jumped, you were not cloaked for any period of time. you had to be in stations to look at the markets. M3G4 were scary. I still remember mt first corp, Novatech. My first ingame friend and corpmate, Rina. She was from Italy. Ill guess the one thing that has changed the most is that none of the people I knew in the first 6 months of the game still play. ;(

Edited by: Corvus Dove on 13/12/2005 00:52:05 1. No cloaking when you came out of a gate. You were just there. Where pirates had deployed 23894756239 drones and cans and you were actually waking up in a clone by the time you loaded the system background bitmap.
2. No barges. Mining Apocs were the ultimate carebearing machines.
3. The only ships that you ever saw in a belt that didn't talk back to you when you hailed them were NPCs. And even they reacted to your presence.
4. Cruisers felt big.
5. NPCs in 1.0 and 0.9.
6. More moon/planet spawns, no such thing as complexes.
7. Afterburners were the propulsion upgrade we all wanted.
8. No level 4 agents.
9. m0o.
10. m0o camping Mara, cutting off the North and South ends of the map for 2 weeks before the Devs tried to roleplay them out of the region in DeD ships. The Devs were losing and had to use server commands to teleport part of the m0o forces (including the first player BS) across EVE...interestingly, on top of a mining op. That's why we have sentries.

I'm like 99% positive there was no bs there. Anyway pretty much everything has been said (did anyone mention duel ab cruisers?). The game looked different, felt different and played defferent. There was more of a defined line in skill in pvp b/c it was so much harder and so many more things that were needed to do while fighting. It isnt quite as lock and fire automatic by use of scanner as it is now.
Not that I am complaining as it is a really much better game. However I would love to see a gemeni week on SiSi as well as instead of Stealth Bomber just a plain old Bomber frig. Slower then ceptor, faster the frig that fires cruise missles, man that would be a fun ship to have. ---------------

Rawr, I came almost a year late, but here are the major changes since I came:
* Yulai to anywhere in empire within a few jumps. * Alliances having no help in infrastructure (no insurance, no official alliances etc) * NPC bounties/mission rewards less than a third of today. Maybe less (could make a mil at lvl3 agents after a few hours) * The only t2 thing in game was the ceptors XD * The aforemention ceptor prints going for 1-2 billions in auctions * NO ASSETS * corporations counting their power in the number of bs their members had (as in a few) * 5k players at peak time. Barely. * 1 billion was simply an amazing fortune. * The old forums, much less categories (omg all market-stuff in the same category) * No Eris

The rumour of an event in caldari prime that caught on like wildfire. Over 500 in the system, all orbitting the stations and hanging out like we were waiting for a jove rockband to play or something :P Nothing happened except a bunch of lag (we were expecting a jove diplomat)... 30 minutes to dock etc... was fun though :) People blamed CCP for it, saying they used everyone an guinea pigs for a public stress test

I wish a huge empire event happened again, maybe just before the RMR patch or something, so if it all comes tumbling down, who cares?

Prices weren't fractionable back then, trit was either 1 isk or 2 isk
Text was very small and there wasn't any space in numbers, making it very easy to scam peoples, there wasn't any average price either and no warning if the price you were going to pay was out of range from the actual item value, 111111 actually looked less expensive then 10000, you had to be very careful
No escrows, it was all courrier missions, lots of scam there too
Many bugs that have been corrected since then, one of which made all your modules go offline when you undocked
Bad Events, giving Miner II Blueprits, only a handful of people had them for a long while, selling them at very high prices, then they were possible to get by doing a little more then 300 missions for a single agent, which made them highly distributed, result: Miner II went for 5m each to 150k -----

That was priceless. Assumption 4tw! The only thing better was all the speculation that the event would herald the arrival of Jump Drives.
So my vote goes to wild speculations about JDs and Titans. Some of them were just hillarious.

I think the wayback machine idea earlier in the thread is brilliant.
After RMR rolls out, CCP ought to do an that as a "look how far we've come" type event. It would be a blast to play Old school EVE for just a day or so. I imagine it would require a ton of work on CCP's part make the current characters compatable with the old versions, however.

I don't think it would be that hard. All they really need to work on is a way to make the skills that have come out since then not matter on the server. Either by ignoring them, or removing them from our characters.

hmm.... No autopilot,
Missile being targettable
in early early beta, light missiles 1 shotting most ships (everyone WAS in noob frigs of course)
medium beam lasers doing enough damage to 2 volley a vexor from a thorax.
no autopilot being able to jump through a gate after shooting at someone
no useable map (early beta)
flying through blue floating balls of light to dock.
flying through stations
being able to stop ship mid warp, and if you timed it right you would come out of warp
0m from your target, no need for isntas : D this was early beta as well
npc pirates being at npc pirate stations
the thorax being REALLY green
a medium smartbomb being able to render all of a missile ships weapons useless (i REALLY miss those days)
not being able to fit mwds to frigates at all, but being able to make a battleship fly at ludicrous speeds with 5 of them
getting skillpoints for doing certain things like undocking or firing a laser
shield tanking being the only way to go, armor reps were for after the fight when you were low on armor
after jumping through a gate, coming out at some random planet in the system
being able to fly through about every object (beta)
missiles hitting asteroids and being detonated
industrials having over 50k cargo capacity
everything taking 1000 units to reprocess when mining
no multiple levels of skills (back in beta)
The bestower being THE industrial to fly around in.
Biggest spawns being a guristas eraser, way the hell out in deep deep 0.0 space
CCP implementing battleship npcs, and a battleship group piloted by the venal alliance getting spanked by a belt spawn.
No basic insurance, and insurance only laster 2 weeks
the only pvp that went on was endless corp threatening to nerve gas bomb taggart over the forums (pre beta)
