What other skills do you have? Do you have missile skills? Railgun skills?

The beauty of the Ferox is its flexibility. Rail platform or missle platform, tank or gank, the only pitfall of it is its lack of speed (handles like a brick).
If you're still noobish, focus on tanking before ganking. A Ferox set up with a passive shield tank is practically indestructible for lvl3 missions and low-sec ratting, although your skills will dictate your overall effectiveness defensive and offensive.

Peek 2 or 3 pages back in this forum, there are a couple other Ferox threads from recent days.

Quoted for truth and with RMR the Ferox and t2 variants will be the ship of choice for going into lvl 4 missions as well. Damage control and shield skills FTW!!! From what I have been hearing on SiSi it's possible to tank a ferox to 90% to all. Don't know it thats possible with a large t2 extender (for a passive set-up) but it's going to be an uber tanker. The eagle will also have the same kinda bonuses only with an even better tank, if the MK2 changes for it are implamented. *hugs tomb* THANK YOU FOR NOT MAKING CALD SUCK ANYMORE... well at least when it comes to tanking crap.

what do you need(skills/modules) to passive shield tank a ferox in PvE? and is it viable in PvP?

"Problem" with Ferox: You get the skills to fly one very fast. It's like getting licence, buy a Ferrari and don't know how to handle that beast.
I bought my Ferox because I was bored of doing lvl2 in my Caracal, but I didn't have enough skills to handle the Ferox very well. Take a break while in your cruiser and train up the support- (engineering (shield- and capa-related), some navigation (agility)) and weaponskills a bit until you get the Ferox. Ferox isn't instawin.

Skills: Shield managment gives 5% HP per level Shield Operation gives 5% Shield Recharge per level Shield upgrades gives ability to use Large Extender II at level 4. Energy Grid Upgrades at level 4 gives ability to use Power Diagnostic Unit/System II (Can`t remember if it`s system or unit )
Passive tank is calculated by taking HP/recharge in same ways as capacitor-calculation, but shield uses a Peak at 2.5x(HP/recharge).
I`d advice 2x Large Extender II as start when fitting a passive-tank and build rest of setup around that.
For PvP it got very limited use, it can be used as a bait with high HP and decent recharge.
Best passive-tank i`ve found out is; 3x Large Extender II, 2x passive/active hardeners 4x Shield Power Relays
Hardeners i use is EM and Thermal.
I got Shield Managment 3 and Shield Operation 3, 10200 Shield HP 348 Shield Recharge ------ 29.3x2.5 = 73.25 Hitpoints regen per sec at ~30% Shield HP
I don`t find passive-tank viable in PvP with a ferox except the bait, but i`ve heard the Dominix is pretty good passive-tanked.

I wonder if it can fit 5xMed NeutIIs and 2Nos or assault launchers with passive or quasi passive shield tank and mfs lows. granted optimal bonus is for rails but rails aint for pvp Neuts have good optimal and the ship bonus would bring optimal+falloff closer to ac range which is more important than peeps realise sometimes...

so you are meaning to say that the optimal bonus for rails apply to neuts?

This is mostly because you'd use neutrons, which have a very nice range for blasters (competing with autocannons). The optimal bonus gives you very little extra range, barely noticable. Link.

Hmmm thanx for that NB. I was thinking along the lines of comparing the brown line as a viable alternative of the pink line if you like (ferox with Neutr and Brutix with Ions). There is certainly DPS difference but a rock hard tank on the Ferox would allow for 3mfsII, not so on the Brutix... (Oc the brutix will fit 7 guns -dont know if you have factored than on the analysis, but the Ferox also ha 2 extra slots for Nosing or assault launchers with tech II precison missles )
I was wondering if it could be possible to have such a graph: 1) Brutix 5 Ions II (assuming 2Nos) no mfs 2) Ferox 5 neut II (2nos)3mfsII 3) Deimos 4 Ions II (2 NOS) -unlikely but for the sake of the argument- no mfs 4) Eagle 4 Neut II (2nos) 2mfsII
Could you do that?
PS Actually looking at my request again... I d probably have to pay you ú100 for all this nm...

i have 5 arb heavies and 2 of either 125 compcoil, med SB, or 250mm scout (working on NOS) 1 large booster II, 1 boost amp, and 3 sheild resist (em, kin, therm;the 32.5 ones) and combination of wcs, pdus and bcs.
seems to work well for me. boost gives about 100 points per second, plus sheild recharge. Plan to get some T2 resistance amps, but its not that much of a priority atm
resists are like 40, 64, 64, 51 with BC lvl 2

Edited by: Eagle32 on 19/12/2005 04:39:46 This is what I'm playing around with at the moment. Still changing things around a bit tho. I have more missile skills than gunnery. Oh and I usually only use my ferox for mision running so that's what I set up for. I hate missions with a passion. Just been doing them to check out how the ferox performs now
Hi: 5x heavy missile launchers, 2x 250mm rails.
Med: 2x Invulnerability Field I, Anointed EM Ward, 2x Large T2 Shield Extenders.
Lo: PDS I, Shield Power relay, 2 wcs.
The wcs are only on because I've been a little paranoid since RMR came out. They'll probably get thrown out for bcu's once I'm happy the tank is fine. No problems so far.
With BC 3 and my skills I have ~8.5k of shields on a 592s recharge. Resists of Em 70%, Explosive 80%, Kinetic 70%, Thermal 60%.

Link. The double range bonus (which is more than a double range bonus actually) of the eagle make it have a marginal range advantage over the ferox, which instead fits an extra damage mod and hence gets more damage, but less range. Traditional blasterboats show a gimped damage in comparison as they do not have damage mods fitted and are fitting nos instead of guns. The comparison isn't complete as drones aren't shown on the graph, by the way.

i've only been playing about five months and a good portion of that, after getting advanced stats 4 across the board, has been heavily concentrated on missiles and shield tanking. after rmr my passive shield tank for level 3 missions has me feeling very very safe. i currently have 14k shields and regen of right at 40 base (which is 100ish/sec at around 30%) i sport 5 arbalest assault launchers [t2s as soon as the new missiles become available], t2 ab,4x t2 large shield extender [385 signature radius, but not fighting battleships yet so it doesn't really matter] and 4 local power relays [haven't bothered with t2s here, can't find them and freqwently replace with bcus anyway] i only have level 2 skills with battlecruiser [10% em on my shields] i read a lot about what hardeners to use, etc. but i have never gotten the hang of using them so i dont. i have 2200 cap that recharges in 1600 seconds, plenty since all i use it for is warping and afterburner. just accept that you will always be pretty slow and grow accustomed to it. a turtle's shell comes with a turtle's speed :) drones are a qwick little add to dps, btw, and not too hard to manage. for my level 3 missions, i kill average frigates in 2 volleys, the hard guys, in about 10 and can easily tank any single group of enemies. i have missile range of 34k [maxes at 42k] which i find to be plenty for my set up. if you don't loot, you can chew through missions. i take the extra time, myself, though. when i have an extravaganza i only loot level 4 and 5 in the ferox, finish off the mission and return to loot the first three stages with another ship.
i love my ferox.

Its great to see so many people talking about passive tanking.
I would suggest looking at the 2 normal shield implants and mindlink implant that adds 15% shield hitpoints. Having all 3 implants at once should give a very large boost to the Ferox.
But I am not aware of anyone selling mindlinks yet.Hopefully only a few more days before someone gets some. _________________________________________________ Nominate famous people in Eve who had an impact on you. |

i went with a speed implant instead of more shield. passive shield tanking is all-or-nothing until you get to 'good enough' then you can back off a bit to 'comfortable'. i don't really use the other 2 high slots on a regular basis, autotargeting was a huge disappointment for me. sometimes i fit a pair of nosferatus, but am looking forward to the day i can put in the shield hardening warfare module. i saw a highslot drone increase mod, not sure if that adds drone capacity or something else... 2 of those might be useful if i read that arightly.

This is what I am trying in my med and low slots:-
Med 3* large shield extender II 2* invulnerability field
Low 4* PDS 1* damage control
shield is 12722 and shield resists are 57/83/74/65

I'm liking mine after RMR. Pretty simillar to most passive tanks and it works a dream for 99% of level 3's.
I was thinking about a thorax killing setup, always run into at least one when in low sec.
Highs: 2x Med NOS 1x Med Smartie 4x Blaster Meds: 1x Scrambler 1x Large SB 1x Boost Amp 1x Em Hardner 1x Invuln Lows: 1x Damage Control 2x mag stabs 1x pdu
any thoughts? Might be a bit light on dmg since i would be able to use my own drones untill i kill of theirs. Resists and nos+sb+amp should tank pretty well.
