errr - Ace Dionysus - if this was a freebie Counterstrike server then yes, but I beg to differ , I work for a big blue IT company ( the biggest in the world actually ) & I can tell you that if you drop a customer server , whether it is SEIBEL, SAP, exchange, oracle , or EVE whatever - the sh1t hits the fan & the customer gets financial recompens - no question.
This is NOT a "oh well it's only a game" argument.
If there are possible upgrades for performance or the apps, then they should be fully load tested on the test/dev servers beforehand, not on the prod setup.
If the game has a maximum capacity of users that can safely use it, then it should be capped until it can be safely expanded.
I'm a software engineer and a unix techy, so I understand what must be frantically going on in the background - but there is little excuse for dropping a service to paying customers - full stop.
Hi Elaine Doi, since you are in the party, you know that it all depends on the SLA (Service Level Aggrement) between the Service provider and the customer.
Unfortunately, this is true for the service providers but the contract CCP has with the player, the EULA, is much more "loose" and there is no availability commitment at that level.
BTW, I am working for the other number one IT company in the world (the one with two letters) in a similar dept. as you :)
I myself work in managed services for a 2 letter global company (the 2 letters work out to 14 letters if expanded)
Its all about the SLA - as we the customers do not have a SLA (or even a SLO) then we are pretty much SOL for any compensation.
As we are are only bound by the EULA we can't say 'give me x for the downtime. Especially by this being in the EULA:

While CCP attempts to have the System available at most times, CCP does not guarantee that the System will always be available, or that the System will not become unavailable during Game play. The System may become unavailable for a number of reasons, including without limitation during the performance of maintenance to the System, for the implementation of new software, for emergency situations and due to equipment or telecommunications failures.
Trust me, by supporting client servers (various platforms) you end up knowing how to read the fine print to get things either out of the client, or at least, not having to pay the client back.
So in the end, if the server crash's, or goes down, you have 2 options: 1) Accept the fact CCP does do their best to keep the system available for all pretty much most of the time - (normal DT of course) and works damn hard to get it running again pretty damn fast - dispite all the complaining on here. or, 2) You can leave - but good luck finding another MMO this size, complexity, that actually will give 2 cents about your thoughts and cares (unlike CCP)
Good Job CCP - please though get eve up, so these nay-sayers can get off the forums. {flame on guys}
oh - Atyka - if your in the same company ingame me when its up. |
