as christmas nears we all tend to forget the freedoms we all enjoy(eve included as freedom) and while driving around today i heard a poem that moved me and id like to dedicate it to all the soldiers of the world who risk and give there lives for our freedoms i know most wont see this but i hope those of you who are soldiers at war share this poem with your comrades for you are all heroes in my eyes no matter country or race thank you for your loyalty our hearts will always be with you.
A Soldiers Silent Night
ęTwas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone, In a one-bedroom house made of plaster and stone. I had come down the chimney, with presents to give and to see just who in this home did live.
As I looked all about, a strange sight I did see, no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. No stocking by the fire, just boots filled with sand. On the wall hung pictures of a far distant land.
With medals and badges, awards of all kind, a sobering thought soon came to my mind. For this house was different, unlike any IĘd seen. This was the home of a U.S. Marine.
IĘd heard stories about them, I had to see more, so I walked down the hall and pushed open the door. And there he lay sleeping, silent, alone, Curled up on the floor in his one-bedroom home.
He seemed so gentle, his face so serene, Not how I pictured a U.S. Marine. Was this the hero, of whom IĘd just read? Curled up in his poncho, a floor for his bed?
His head was clean-shaven, his weathered face tan. I soon understood, this was more than a man. For I realized the families that I saw that night, owed their lives to these men, who were willing to fight.
Soon around the Nation, the children would play, And grown-ups would celebrate on a bright Christmas day. They all enjoyed freedom, each month and all year, because of Marines like this one lying here.
I couldnĘt help wonder how many lay alone, on a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home. Just the very thought brought a tear to my eye. I dropped to my knees and I started to cry.
He must have awoken, for I heard a rough voice, ōSanta, donĘt cry, this life is my choice I fight for freedom, I donĘt ask for more. My life is my God, my country, my Corps.ö
With that he rolled over, drifted off into sleep, I couldnĘt control it, I continued to weep.
I watched him for hours, so silent and still. I noticed he shivered from the cold nightĘs chill. So I took off my jacket, the one made of red, and covered this Marine from his toes to his head. Then I put on his T-shirt of scarlet and gold, with an eagle, globe and anchor emblazoned so bold. And although it barely fit me, I began to swell with pride, and for one shining moment, I was Marine Corps deep inside.
I didnĘt want to leave him so quiet in the night, this guardian of honor so willing to fight. But half asleep he rolled over, and in a voice clean and pure, said ōCarry on, Santa, itĘs Christmas Day, all secure.ö One look at my watch and I knew he was right, Merry Christmas my friend, Semper Fi and goodnight.
God bless every one and have a merry christmas Axis

Your soldiers risk nothing for my freedom, this thread needs to be locked before it turns into a political debate about the War in Iraq.

As a US Soldier away from home stationed in Germany I want to thank you for the poem, and your support. Believe me it is very much appreciated.
For anyone who didn't read what he wrote fully I quoted a part that might be overlooked by a few of you. In other words no matter what country you are from this season I can tell you first hand that your own soldiers appreciate your support.
On a matter of debating the politics of the world and the choices made, lets not turn this thread into that to avoid it being locked.
Again, Axis thanks for the support.

My country was free before they were forced overseas by another nations war, I will not thank any other nations soldiers to forcing my countrymen to move from their families. They should be at home.

Our country is perfectly safe, but we still lose OUR soldiers to fight other peoples wars. Even our ALLIES kill us so I fail to see the point of congratulating them, if they can't recognise a vehicle full of British lads!

Nice poem though, although the content is illusionized. You watch too much american TV, get to europe and open your eyes to the real world.

Don't post political stuff on the forums. .. and that includes offering up thanks to soldiers, whatever side they be on.

Edited by: Noden Vorpalstar on 17/12/2005 16:04:45 It saddens me to see such a misunderstanding of the intention of Axis Featherfall's post. It makes me sick to see people disrespect a fellow Eve player for expressing his thoughts and wishes to those who are not able to be with their families this holiday season.
No where in his post did he aim it at soldiers of any specific nation, or any specific war or humanitarian operation in the history of the world. The fact is it was others in this thread that decided to bring up the idea of politics.
I've read the rules, and it does say not to discuss politics on this forum. No where does it state you cannot thank soldiers. Of course it also states we are not supposed to be discussing religion. Is anyone attacking CCP for using a verse from the Christian Bible's Book of Revelations on the front page of the website for Red Moon Rising? No, and I doubt any of you will, because you know it would be a disrespective action towards the game so many of you love. Regardless of your race, religion or ethnic background.
Other things have been said here that I will not discuss because I will be respectful to your view points, and I would be happy to see others consider the same course of action in their thoughts.
I encourage all of you to stop for a moment and return to the beginning of this thread, and reread his words from the beginning. And if you are still too selfcentered, or too selfish then go on and ignore this thread.
Opinions are like ******** everyone has one.
On a more positive note.
Have a Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year

I love how these kinds of threads always result in the anti-war people coming off as the most hateful and spiteful. Great way to show your true colours.
It was a lovely post, axis.

As much as I admire people that believe so strongly in something as to think fighting wars is a way to protect the families of ones country, I'd say it is wrong to salute them as heroes. The wars they willingly participate in puts their home countries in even greater danger, thinking about every major act of terrorism that has been directed towards the US and European countries in recent years. Terrorism is not a greater global threat than it was some 20 years ago, but the difference now is that us Westerners are more frequent targets, through motivation that we crusade against others and must be punished for it.
Just my words before the lock, with no disrespect towards either soldiers or those who supports them.

the poem is about US marines
i don't think this is suitable for these forums, as politics is banned, and as it does specify a nation, i think this would be classed as political.
many people (and i bet there are some in eve) have had wars against america recently, who wouldn't like to see a a poem dedicated to soldiers using america as a paragon.
i have no problems with war in general, or the posting of a poem for soldiers. i just think that using a poem that references one particular military force is a bit shortsighted

you people make me sick not once did i say i support war not once did i say i believe in wars that are going on you people blame the soldiers for these wars insulting them and accusing them of willingly participating in these wars well i got a news flash kids its not there decision there just following orders people are quick to blame the soldiers of the world but did you ever stop to think......oh wait maybe its the government whos been declarin these wars.(holy **** can this be true) ya i think so these people are dieng on a daily basis they face it every day and at a time when they need support to raise there morale you spit in there faces. well im sick of it i hope one day your countries are truly in need of soldiers and because you feel so strongly about the uselessness of wars you have none and it bites you in the ass. this thread will probably be locked but i dont care and i probably risk being banned from the forums but again i dont care you turned a thread that was meant to be a gift of thanks to those who have no choice but to follow orders into a political flamefest with your childish shananagans
so CCP please lock this thread before any more of these fools defile the true meening of this thread more than they have already

You truly capture what being a soldier is - not the petty politics people are trying to bring into this thread, but what it truly means. I think anyone who is, was, or has someone close in the military will appreciate what you're saying.
I'm also appalled at some of the ignorant and hateful responses to this. Why are people so obsessed with politics that they can't see the people that are risking their lives - and often losing them - and honor them for that?

I am a US Soldier and have spent 2 years in combat zones. I'm not a fan of war but man is it exciting. I hope it keeps going. I'm make a lot of money when I get deployed.
For those of you who think you know all about the war in iraq and afghanistan why don't you volunteer to go there and find out for yourselves.

Because soldiers are a tool used for political ends? Because this tool destroys life on a massive scale? Because their "semper fidelis" is abused? The responses are not hateful, they take this into account.
