I've seen a lot of people setting up cans to trap people already, in mining belts and otherwise. I'm also a miner, so I'd like to know exactly how it works before I do anything.
Now I know that if someone takes something from my can, they get flagged. But my questions are: 1. If they get flagged for taking from my can, can I fire on them. I can right? 2. If they get flagged, can they also start firing on me, or can they only start firing on me if I fire first. Or in other words, if they take something from my can, can they also start to attack me right away because they were flagged, or do they get concorded if they fire first after they take from my can?
That's my biggest concern here.

ANSWER: NO, You have to fire on them first - and then they are justified in attacking you. Till you open fire they are governed by Empire rules and will get killed by concord.

Edited by: Slink Grinsdikild on 17/12/2005 14:48:37 They can only retaliate if you engage them first. And just so you know pods are out of the question, I followed a macro'er back to the station earlier to get the pod and the sentry guns decided to light up on me.
Edit: the golden rule for all legit players ofcourse is to *never* bypass the warning given when you're about to take from someone elses can.

Thanks for the info. Also another question related to this: If I fire on someone who took my stuff, and they fire back, can my entire corp fire on them from that moment on? Could any escorting cruisers fire on the thief once I have shot at them and they returned fire?

i was wondering about this too. cuz it would be a shame if you in a barge (drone nerf) who cant really defend yourself had your ore taken and a gang or corp mate couldnt help you out. - - -

I'm just waiting for the first post about a sting operation where someone sets up a few alts named rfaejo, freyyerw, asdfg and qwerty and the sits mining in jita without responding in local.
Then the story will go on to tell how someone tried to use the flagging to engage.
Just as they remove the stuff from the can, qwerty and asdfg's 10 gangamates decloak in their pwnagemobiles and tear the guy a new hole.
It will indeed be funny.

Or alternatively: Miner notices ore thief stealing from his can. Miner opens fire on ore thief, as per the flagging. Ore thief has a gang of friends waiting a short jump away, or maybe in stealth, who jumps in and owns the poor miner.

I think this will result in the gang mates being splatted by Concord but in any case someone flying a mining ship opening fire on a thief is being a bit silly. They should get their own gang and corp mates to deal with the thief. -- (Battle hardened miner)

Since can thieves get flagged to the gang and corp as well. This isn't an issue, you in the miner don't need to fire, and the thief needent fire back. As soon as the can is opened and the thief attempts to move something across, your escort cruisers are perfectly entitled to light him up like a christmas tree anyway. -- Olenir Theadorvin, Director, Cygnus United.
