ECM mechanics as is aren't as good as they could be. For the person having them used on them they simply prevent them from playing. No player skill or tactics is used to counter them other than the appropriate equipment, friends, or implants when in v. In solo pvp jams are very annoying, in larger fleet pvp they aren't that effective or the ships using jams are easily destroyed.
I propose a redesign of jams to make them better for both users and targets.
-My plan is to make ECM fit into a highslot and adjust there fitting requirements to be far greater according to module size (elaborate on later). This frees up ECM bonused ships to fit up a shield tank and fit in more with there races doctrines. Being more tanky would also mean that ships like the scorpion could stick around longer in a fight without quickly melting. All ships with ECM bonuses would be totally retooled to be capable of fitting jammers and a shield tank, but only a few or no guns.
-Jammers would no longer work with dice roll mechanic, but be a binary work or not work similar to dampeners, but at the same time they would have a massive range nerf to 25km optimal with no fall off. However instead of shutting off all targeting, it prevents you from locking targets close to you.
-Module sizes would be introduced, these sizes being small, medium, and large. A small racial module on a bonused ship would have a strength of 2, medium 4, and large 6. A multispec would work 60% as well as a racial and a different race would be 30% as good. How these stats work is you take the combined strength of all the jammers applied and divide them by the sensor strength of the ship. Then you take that number and multiply it by the range of the jammer. You are now unable to lock anything closer than that distance.
TL;DR Jams would be in high slots, ecm boats would be able to shield tank, no more dice rolls, and ECM works the opposite of sensor damps.

what exactly does this fix?
part f the reason ecm works now is most players roll sr setups for damn near everything. You ecm change shuts down sr warfare. the whines of because of falcon will still flow as their say blaster boat is still shutdown. At now 100% hit. The whines would be worse. Currently they have a decent chance to no be jammed at all.
Now you may counter well bring LR. I'd agree. I in fact in many ecm threads have said bring the sniper. I mention cerb being damn good at this (even in the days of true because of falcon) alot. Bring 3 AC vaga's, some/all of them getting jammed rushing the falcon should not be a surprise. Sniper in ecm falloff if not compleltely clear generally has better luck.
Current player base basically does not like LR for many things....not seeing them shift if this play. they'd just whine more.
Your size based ecm is also the start of a very slippery slope. I could say why stop here. Lets go for sized points as we could debate the wtf factor of how a a pos frigate flown by a 2 day noob can tackle a marauder that takes months and months of training to fly for a good while if one of us played devil's advocate. Fill in TP, SD, TD, scrams for the above as well. |

ECM in its current state shuts down ALL ranges. 2 racial jammers and your battlecruiser or lower is ****** unless you fit for eccm/bought implants.
You also forget that instead of having a falcon that is 100km away that can just warp away to a safe spot if you get close or cloak if you bring a nado you now have a ship that is completely unable to leave. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=174097 Separate all 4 empires in eve with lowsec. |
