The Rifter was my first pvp ship. I read wensley's rifter drifter guide and went out to lose some rifters and had a blast. It saddens me to see this beloved ship to be in such poor shape in todays meta. CCP buffed all the other frigates to the skies and left the Rifter behind. I think CCP should take another look at it and make it more diverse from the slasher.
There's some confusion around how strong the rifter was before the frigate rebalancing. I flew the rifter for 2 years prior to the rebalancing and I was beat by plenty of the other tier 3 frigates. The Merlin was very strong back then already, I lost plenty of rifters to merlins and yet CCP chose to buff it even further. Kestrels were extremely strong in the pre-rebalancing frigate meta since most of the pvp able frigates were turret based and the kestrel could kite these with a dualweb rocket setup very efficiently. The Punisher was very much the same back then as it is now and the inqusitor was a missile frigate extremely underused minding how powerfull it could be in the hands of a good pilot. I met a brawling inquisitor once during my 2 years of flying rifters and it was one of the closest fights I've ever had.
My point here is, just because the rifter was the one that was the most commonly used tech 1 frigates didn't mean it was OP and since it wasn't really OP there was no reason for it to be left behind so badly in the frigate rebalance.
If you look at the rifter today in the t1 frigate meta it's pretty much crap at everything, it's like the old ferox - it can do alot of things but does none of them good. It doesn't have the speed of an attack frigate, it doesnt have the tank of a combat frigate and it doesn't have much gank to speak of either. What used to make the rifter strong was it's ability to project damage further than blaster boats while being able to make a decent tank at the same time as having a decent range control. Right now it has worse projection than blaster frigs loading null even if you load barrage(you have to get outside scram range for autocannons to win the projection game). For new minmatar players skilling into projectiles the slasher is the superior choice in every matter. It has higher speed, similar tank, the same dps if the rifter doesnt fit a rocket launcher which makes little difference anyway, a role bonus that makes it easier on cap, a better slot layout and a smaller signature radius.
The only competetive fit I've come up with for the rifter lately is 280mm artillery. This fit however needs very high SP to work as it plays on the fact that the rifter has higher base powergrid than the slasher and is able to run a microwarpdrive and warp disruptor without cap problems(assuming you have max capacitor skills). I've got a buddey that fits light neutron blasters on a rifter and sadly it works better than autocannons.
TLDR For a solution I propose the following:
1, Change the skill bonuses from damage and tracking to damage and rate of fire to follow a common minmatar trend or damage and fallof to establish it's role as an attack ship and make it differ from the slasher. 2. Change its slot layout - remove the useless utility high(if you like the utility high I advice you fly a slasher instead, it makes better use of it - dat capstable neut) and replace it with a low or medium slot. 3. Increase its base speed to 375 m/s (this is important) Solo Pvper in all areas of space including wormhole space. I do not think CCP does actually care if a ship is OP, but instead care for the variety of ships. A ship being OP can be a reason why it is flown more often than other ships, but it could also have other reasons. When a ship is being flown too often will it affect the overall balance of the game. In other words, when in a game of rock-paper-scissors someone always calls rock will it get boring very quickly. Loss is meaningful. Therefore is the loss of meaning likewise meaningful. It is the source of all trolling. |

However, I disagree with changing it's base speed, at least to that extent. I think it should definitely gain another low slot to make it a bit like a mini cane/rupture. While this may be unnecessary, I think it's a bit tight on cpu, but then again I believe so for a lot of frigates. Except, of course, that the armor Slasher gets the magic ab-scram-web-TD combo, so for most purposes it's better at that as well. And pretty much anywhere the Rifter does outdo the Slasher, they're both outdone by another frigate. |

1.) Tracking is a major boon to the rifter. You may not realize it, but it is majorly important of applying damage to drones and frigates when you are orbiting, and will generally help you much more than a double damage bonus. The Rifter is still pretty much equivalent to the Punisher in terms of firepower, but the merlin seems to light years ahead in terms of dps and tank (50% more on both). Believe it or not, if you scram/web a merlin, orbit at 500 with your ab overheated, you'll mitigate a ton of the merlin's dps (cause it doesn't have a tracking bonus), and allow you to win the fight.
2.) Useless high? One of the HUGE strengths of the rifter comes from fitting a NOS in that "useless high". This allowed it to defy neut pressure, keep it's SAR running, and hit above its weight class. Alternatively, a neut was brutal against active tanked ships when shield gank fit. In general, a rocket launcher is a TERRIBLE use of that high, only slightly better than leaving it empty. It is that utility high with the 3 guns, 3 mids, 3 lows that made it so incredibly useful and versatile!
3.) Increasing the rifter's speed may help flush out it's old place. It still is pretty fast for a combat frig though, and I'm not sure this is necessary.
Overall, I would leave it mostly as is, but simply replace the 5% damage bonus to a 5% R.O.F. bonus (+8.33% dps).

This is mildly disingenuous. The tracking bonus is hardly nothing, but orbiting at 500 will still impact your own dps quite substantially as well. Secondly, the Rifter is faster than its counterparts, but it isn't that fast. Against a non-stationary enemy, maintaining an orbit anywhere close to tight to enough to break the tracking on small blasters requires a ship that is both substantially faster than your opponent and quite agile (hey, look at that - the slasher is faster and more agile than a rifter). Plus, a decent pilot could pulse overheat on their afterburner while flying in a straight line to drag you out behind them, at which point your angular velocity will not be enough to usefully mitigate damage. |

Switch Damage Bonus to Rate of Fire and Tracking Bonus to Falloff, maybe paired with a slightly better base speed, and it should be viable again and not on the ever-receiving end but somewhere mixed in.
Also, Slasher is *not* the new Minmatar Working Horse on Frigscale, it's the breacher. I think the only frigate that's stronger than the breacher is the Tristan (unless you include faction frigs) |

Pretty much what whitehound said. They change ships based on their usage within the player base not actual power. This is the reason the cane was nerfed even though it was a much worse brawler than many BCs and a way worse kiter than the tier 3s. It is also the reason that although the sacrilege is probably one of the best HAC's right now it's receiving the largest buff (or at least change) because it is one of the least used whereas the zealot isn't the greatest ship and is over shadowed by the omen navy, but is the most used so they aren't changing it aside from a few minor tweaks to stats.
Before the t1 frigate buff I'd say the merlin was more powerful than the rifter, but the rifter was way way way more common. Now you see all the frigates used and the rifter is still favored by many so there is variety and therefore CCP has done their job. |

I disagree with people saying everything is okay with Rifter. It is not. While the point of the Tiericide was to buff the other frigates, Rifter specifically is not up-to-date.
Seriously. Slasher has four meds and the same bonuses. Naked fittings already show that the Rifter has just some 200ehp or so more. That's nothing - just another stone to throw before it blows up.
Others hoped Tiericide would make the Rifter more of a brawler sort, leaving all the tackling more to Slasher and other frigs. Personally, I had the impression the Rifter could be more of a "heavy frigate", but is too dificult for the most to imagine.
Tracking Speed is a good ship bonus as well as the Damage bonus. But somewhere, if Rifter is to be different, than it would be best to swap those for other bonuses that would make it unique.
This is however why I suggested there should be a seperate branch of frigates, one be frigates, the other "corvettes" (And don't even start on arguing with me about the terms vs ship sizes - there are a lot more Eve ships that don't fit into their terms either). Why? Because we have the same problem over and again: People want fast frigates, but then the other half says can't tank. People want the tanky variant, but then other half says whatsoever.
So why not just have both, a tank/brawler type and the classic Rifter (same would apply for other factions). Using tablet, typoes are common and I'm not going to fix them all. |

The rifter in comparison to the other ships in it's class is overly weak.
Gaining a small amount of powergrid/CPU would open up new fitting options, and adjusting the damage bonus to a ROF bonus would tweak the dps up marginally. This would allow it to use it's current 4:3:3 slot layout to greater effect. Allowing a 4th turret instead of the launcher/utility but keeping the current PG/CPU would be another option. Just thought I'd chime in on this thread as the Rifter is definitely not much use any more.
Sure there's plenty of people still flying them but there's plenty of people do all kinds of stupid things.
Aside from armour tanking there is no fit on a rifter that wouldn't be better on a slasher, and armour tanking means no damage mods which for an attack frigate seems bad.
The Rifter would be a significantly better ship with Randy (the OP)'s modifications, or the ones suggested by Anabaric. The only other suggestion I have is to give the rifter fitting bonuses for projectile weapons. This is more in keeping with it's role but effectively achieves the same as a pg/cpu increase but only if you fit projectiles. This doesn't seem too rediculous given the role bonus on the slasher.
Having said that Assault Frigates have a role bonus of mwd sig bloom reduction. This would be of more use on a rifter if it had enough pg/cpu to easily fit one.
Personally I hope CCP drag their heels on this for a while as then the price of the rifter should crash and I can start using them as disposable shuttle gank boats. |

What kinda alternative universe do you live in? The only thing that put the rifter (and other minmatar ships like the cane and rupture) ahead of it's counterparts was the utility high. If you argue against this you've not done your homework. I spent countless hours EFTing and flying most of the frigates pre-rebalance (same with cruisers and battlecruisers) and they got fairly similar stats and alot of ships were actually superior to the rifter in performance. The cookie cutter rifter was so common because:
1. It required less skillpoints to fly effectively than other races frigates since it didn't need as many support skills like capacitor and fitting skills. Because of this stuff like rifter swarms became popular, because there was no other ship that a 3 day old noob could get as much performance out of as the rifter. 2. It was versatile, the cookie cutter NOS/SAR rifter fit is good at punching above its weight class, something that wasn't often seen among the rest of the frigates. However with this particular loadout you were most of the time worse off fighting other frigates. The rifter could also support both shield and armor tank loadouts.
Many of these problems were addressed before the frigate rebalance. Hybrid turrets got a reduction in fitting reqs and cap use and the explosion velocity of rockets were buffed making them a viable weapon system which made the kestrel super popular.
I'll say it again, there was no reason for the rifter to be left behind so badly. What you consider as logic is basically that the rifter should be left behind as some sort of punishment for being overly popular in the past? I didn't think that was how rebalancing was supposed to work. Solo Pvper in all areas of space including wormhole space. A close range weapon system being out damaged by a long range weapon system without a way to get close without killing transversal can be a bit frustrating (ac rifter vs rail incursus). Love the ship, best thing that could happen to it without changing much was to give it more speed, make it faster please? :-)
CCP appears to balance things around popularity, not performance. The problem is that the Rifter is an EvE icon, lot's of them flying around, his popularity is now a curse.

It was faster than other t1 frigates. It did more damage than other t1 frigates save for a few specialized cases in which case it only did slightly less. It had a very strong tank compared to other t1 frigates. It had very high range projection for a t1 frigate. It did all of these things at the same time
There were a couple of other t1 frigates that could potentially beat the Rifter in one of these things, but it would be far worse at everything else.
-A blaster Merlin or incursus would be kited with barrage. -A rail merlin or incursus would just get facehugged and murdered because they were significantly slower than the riftger -Punisher had 2 mids, fitting problems, and exceptionally mediocre damage. The Rifter could just fly up, orbit at 500, and kill it easily. Or, the Rifter could just leave at will, because..you know...no webs. and slow.
I like the Rifter (my corp is named for it). The Rifter is in fact underpowered and needs some buffs, but I can't imagine what kind of warped thought process led you to thinking that the Rifter was even remotely balanced before tiericide. |

Answered for me, appreciated.
The Rifter WAS overpowered. Now it's arguably underpowered, but it can still do some things decently. Dual rep armor fit isn't too bad.

I was considering this as a solution. Both null (or do I mean void?) & scorch seriously outperform barrage which is why a blaster or laser rifter outperforms the AC type. That this is true despite the projectile hull bonus surely means barrage needs a buff. |

I think the rifter should get a falloff bonus or get its rate of fire bonus back. The falloff bonus would give it better projection and dps at range than the slasher with some additional hp, at the cost of speed. It should probably get an hp increase either way. |

Battleclinic or not, I am not a BC'goer and can clearly say that the Rifter is not complete as it stands. And when one starts comparing it with Slasher, it will lose most of the time. There are simple suggestions to fix that and it is not asking for something overpowered (and frakk that word while we're at it). Using tablet, typoes are common and I'm not going to fix them all. |

One of the things I saw passing was to speed it up a little. Given it's current tracking bonus, that would be quite a nice solution because it would give some more use to the tracking bonus against droneless frigs. However, I think this would just make it a Slasher and I wonder if that would actually be a solution, I'd rather think of that 'solution' as moving the problem somewhere else.
Instead I'd prefer to see the tracking to be changed to ROF, as proposed before. This would make it a unique ship for the Minmatar with it's own strengths and weaknesses.

Do not remove the tracking. If the ideia is to boost dps just switch damage with rof. The thing I would like the most was a speed boost, but a combat frig should not touch the speed of an attack frig, so the speed boost would have to be a very small one (5-15m/sec).

Rifter is fine.
You lot who whine that it's underpowered just need to actually learn how to fit and fly the thing rather than just stick up the old cookie cutter fit and expect to own everyone.
When you can fit it to do 175 dps, tank 85 dps and fly at 1.3km/s a LOT of people get really surpised when they die to it!
And those dual repped incursus get really annoyed when you pop them with your pathetic 125mm auto's.

Randy Wray wrote:The Rifter was my first pvp ship.
3. Increase its base speed to 375 m/s (this is important)
have you ever considered trying to fly a rifter like a miniature version of the old typhoon? fit x2 125mm auto, x2 rockets, x1 mwd, x1 scram, x1 web, x1 dc, x1 adaptive nano plate, x1 400mm rolleed tungsten, x2 acr rig, x1 explosive armour rig, has good tank good damage and good range control, try taking ships out their fitting comfort zones, eg laser harpy, and yes they work really well Two Teir Carriers-áhttps://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=207604&find=unread |

I know that rifter is not so underpowered as most people make it but I'm also aware of his limitations. One thing is to like to be the underdog (which in fact I do), another is to be blind. And why those numbers? Did at least you compared those numbers with what other combat frigs can achieve? merlin, incursus, tormentor? Only thing rifter wins is in speed, and the speed advantage is very small when compared to the rest (dps/ehp/tank).
Things are way easier in a breacher, but I still prefer to fly the rifter, some kills you can get with the breacher only feel like *meh*, while the same kill with the rifter feels like it was worth *double points*. I really don't want the superior rifter of old, but a minor buff in his speed would make it less "difficult" to fly against certain targets.
And get over yourself, it is not only you who have experience in flying and killing stuff with rifters. |

EErrrr no, you do not have good damage and you do not have good range control with a 400 plate and an explosive armor rig. I can still see that fit working against a small number of ships whose pilots do not what they are doing, but it is very limited against all the rest.

Get over it you lot and grow a pair I know that rifter is not so underpowered as most people make it but I'm also aware of his limitations.
Completely agree Urkhan mate,
I am also not blind to the place that the rifter has been put after the rebalances. I do these posts with a large amount of bravardo and sarcasm becasue I'm bored with all the people constantly whining about how useless the rifter is nowadays when in fact it is anything but useless. The vast majority of people complaining about the rifter are scrubs who still want to be able to fit a cookie cutter and go out a cream people like they could before rather than actually learning how to fly thier chosen ship, just lazy IMO.
I am actually really bad at pvp in general but I really enjoy flying the rifter it is just not 'easy mode' for frig pvp now and I personally believe that this is a much better place overall for frig pvp than before.
BUT. It is a jack of all trades and the more specialised combat frigates will beat it at their own game but the flexibility it offers is far greater than the other combat frigs. So target selection is key to using the rifter now more than every before (but in all honesty has always been the key to frig pvp)
Those number specifically because it is a fit I have used that rely's on speed and being able to hit a lot harder than most people expect from the rifter. I fly all the frigs now to varying degrees of failure so I am perfectly aware of the number that other can generate. But the key to those numbers is the knowledge on how to 'apply' them. An incursus with 200dps tank and 200dps out means jack squat if it has no cap to actually use those number or has no range control so it can't hit out to the range (and if it can reach that far it's numbers are drastically reduced.) People who rely just on the numbers are just setting themselves up for disapointment when they get owned by something they 'should have beaten easily', pretty much a conversation I have with everyone who I have killed in a rifter. That is the Way, the Tao.
Balance is everything.

IMO a reasonable solution that would preserve the Rifter's trademark versatility / flavor would be to...
Wait for it...
Switch it to a 2/4/4 configuration with either double damage bonus or ROF/tracking and 2 drones
Once again a sexy and interesting ship that can go shield gank or armor+tackle+EWAR
Done.

TBH I think a 5-10m/s base speed increase would be spot on. It would be the faster combat frig but not into the realms of attack frigs. That alone IMO would be enough. That is the Way, the Tao.

I agree with this. At this point in time you can still achieve a lot by using the speed advantage + the good tracking that a Rifter can offer in comparison to other frigs, but a speed buff wouldn't hurt. |

I'd agree with this. We're not asking for a massive buff to put it onto the top of the pile but just a minor tweak to make it competitive with the other T1 frigates.
Switch Damage for Rate of Fire Add 10ms base speed - even at cost of armour/hull HP.
I'd also like to see +5PG as that would open up alot more fitting options for Artillery. Community Manager for Battleclinic.com

The rifter may be more versatile than a merlin or incursus, but it's distinctly less versatile than a breacher or slasher. The minute difference in tank and small (or non-existent ) difference in dps doesn't come close to justifying the use of the rifter over one of the other Minmatar frigates which are both faster and better able to mitigate damage while continuing to apply their own. The minor speed advantage compared to the combat frigates of the other races does not really give a compelling reason to accept significantly less dps and tank. Making it a bit faster might help, but wouldn't go very far to answer the question of why you should fly a rifter instead of a slasher. |

If this meant that you could beat less ships in a Rifter than in a Slasher, I would agree that the Rifter would be in need of a more extreme change. It might be harder and take more time to learn how to, but I don't see that as anything negative. People pick the ship they want to fly based on all kinds of reasons: what race they have spent most time training in, what ship they consider to be the best according to the current meta, the look of the ship et cetera.
I don't think the Rifter needs to have it's own niche in terms of being better at a certain thing in comparison to other frigates. It's niche right now seems to be a frig that most pilots will engage no matter what frig they're in themselves because they believe the Rifter is worse off than, in my highly noobish opinion, it actually is.
Yes, it might be in need of a small buff. But when you can still beat good and experienced pilots in other hulls with it, I don't see a reason for any drastic changes. |

Well any basic rifter fit will put out about 20% more damage than a slasher and have equal to more tank. The main advantage the slasher has is speed and cap the the prop jamming cap usage bonus.
So if a shield rifter comes across a shield neut slasher the worst outcome would be the slasher disengaging and running away. More than likely though would be the slasher dieing and wondering WTF just happened!
Like I have mentioned in other posts the rifter can pretty much counter fit all the other combat orientated frigates but will get owned if it comes across something else. IMO all it needs is a littel bit more speed and maybe +1-2PG for help with arti fits. That is the Way, the Tao.

Shield rifter doesn't get a web, whereas a shield Slasher does. That means that, unless incompetent, it will be trivial for the Slasher to disengage. In fact, it will make it trivial for almost any other frigate to disengage. If you want a t1 frigate that's tanky and doesn't need a web, the Punisher is just better. |

The rifter doesn't do more damage than a slasher unless you're fitting it for high dps, at which point you're giving up most of it's versatility and are better off with an atron or a merlin, depending on whether you're after speed or tank. And while, yes, a rifter tends to have more tank than a slasher, it also has lower speed, larger sig, and less agility, so it's still generally going to wind up taking more damage.
Quote: So if a shield rifter comes across a shield neut slasher the worst outcome would be the slasher disengaging and running away. More than likely though would be the slasher dieing and wondering WTF just happened!
You're talking about something like an 800 m/s speed difference once you factor in the fact that you're webbed and he isn't. Your dps isn't so awesome that you're going to kill him before he realizes what's up and burns off unless he's completely out of it. Plus I refer you to my earlier comment about a merlin or atron. Versus an armor slasher, it's even worse, since he's very likely going to have a td that will negate your dps advantage (and you'll still be way slower than him).
The mere ability to counter-fit does not make a ship versatile, and in practice it makes the ship less versatile, since it forces you to pick a very narrow range of targets. The popular breacher and slasher fits have very wide engagement envelopes - you don't need to counter-fit to have a fighting chance vs a competent opponent in a wide variety of ships. To put it another way, having a ship that can be fit to be third best a two of five things simultaneously gives it versatility, since while it isn't the best at anything, it's got options for how to approach a fight. Being second best at only one of five things just means you're stuck with a supbar version of whatever strategy you went with. |

Concidering where the Rifter is today, I would say it's possible to beat pretty much any other T1 frig using 3 different fits. Some frigs, like the Tristan, has in my limited experience proved to be very difficult but I still think you got a fighting chance. Would this be concidered a very narrow engagement envelope? It's a sincere queston, since I have so little experience in flying other ships it's difficult to know. |

Despite my lack of experience in flying other races ships, I have my dose of experience in the breacher/slasher also. I understand the *3 fits* concept Crake (I think I know which 3 fits are), there are lot's of ships that thanks to their weapon system only need with "one fit, one tactic".
Not that anything is wrong with the *3 fits* concept, I think it's an autocannon flaw (it have virtues too):
- Railguns, keep your oponent far away independent of what he is flying, kite, that's your tactic, at all times.
- Blasters, get up close independent of what he is flying.
- Rockets, keep yourself in rocket range, your rockets will always hit for the same amount (depends of the target velocity, signature, etc), you're range free to work on your target. Some targets you'll want to be up close, others you'll want to kite.
- Autocannons, try to check very fast what he is using, try to get close without messing up transversal in case are rails/lasers (it can be very difficult since rifter is not that fast), pull range if they are blasters (usually easier), hope you have the right ammo loaded (if not, lol, 10 seconds)
- Not going to add mwd laser/missile kiting ships here, since it's more an on/off thing, or you catch them or you don't, ends up being equal to everybody.
Slasher works because of his speed and the extra mid (TD one trick pony,2xWebs, MSAB, whatever). You can have the tactic/ammo decided before going in, and if you see things going wrong, you usually can disengage. You can't do that in a rifter unless you already know what you need to know, yes there are killboards for that, but in a system with >10 locals when you think that you know who that ship belongs to and how he usually fly it someone already went in for the kill, or he simply gave up on the system and went to another one.
3 fits... I know I know, bring the right tool for the job. And when roaming try to make a good target selection according to the fit you're carrying.
The speed I would like to have in the rifter (or lower mass) was to be able to pull range a little faster from blasters, and to make it easier to go in against rails/lasers (it would not change much against rails since rail ships usually do not fit plates or even have a prop/hull upgrade in a low).
I don't need 3 fits to have confidence in sending my breacher against any t1 frig while roaming (unless is a mwd condor) I, for sure, I'm wrong in lot's of stuff, feel free to fix it. |

Without him having a web I'm guessing it was very easy for you to keep him at range. Against rails he would have wanted to get in to a close orbit to avoid as much of the damage as possible and make use of his better tracking. Without a web he can't do that. |

I think I see your point Urkhan. What I'm wondering is if the Rifter's narrow engagement window (if that's what it really is) is something that is just a problem with the Rifter, or only becomes one when you compare it to a few ships like the Breacher that has a very wide engagement envelope?
The option of being able to bravely run away if you run in to something nasty, is something I fully support.

Can't say, do not have experience flying with other weapon systems beside ac/rockets, I only have assumptions, We have blasters at 0, rails at scram, lasers at scram, rockets what ever, ac's... depend of what your target is packing, or you did the homework right before they land or you're in a world of pain. You'll still be in a world of pain even if you did the correct homework, the tank/dps race will be very difficult to overcome against blasters if you start at 0 and pull range, and the get close, careful with transversal against rails/lasers is not easy to overcome in case you start out of scram. This without dropping neuts/tds/damps into the equation which in one way or another can affect all tactics.
I don't go against rocket ships with the slasher, not because I use a TD (not using it lately), but because I don't have the dps/tank to win the race. I go against everything with the breacher, even when losing, usually they are good fights.
Fights in a rifter against rocket kessies are good fights, against MSAB 9 cap charges breachers are a big no no at the moment for me, the armor rep buff next patch will improve things a bit (not against the incursus), the increase in speed/decrease in mass would help to get in/out a little faster (we'll still be kited by non plated rails if we have a plate ourselves, just not that easily).
Another options? I like the falloff bonus but the rifter is the wrong ship for that, usually falloff bonus are in fast/low tank ships for a reason. 433 slasher with a falloff bonus instead of tracking would be great, but that ship is called atron, 442 tracking/damage rifter (current speed/mass) would be great but that's what slasher got. And tbh, despite being limited (or versatile if you prefer - half full or half empty), I like the 433 rifter.
Yep... I would go with speed increase/mass decrease and see what happens. Looks like a small buff that will not change much (or anything at all) but that could help things a little. |

I just LOL at all the people who really think that this game is ship v ship.....it is player v player.
I'll just leave that there for a second to see if an epiphany will hit you while you think about it.
Now all this talk about competant pilots and whatnot is really nice and treehuggy but guess what the punisher has been used since day one as a good brawler in frigate fights and it only has 2 mid slots so the arguement about 'needing' a web have been proved wrong with over a decade of people doing without.
Or.......wait for it......
do without a scram and put a web on the bloody thing WOW! you now have range control again. Who cares if you can't scram them. Like I mentioned before this is player v player and the vast majority of players just don't realise that they are not scrammed in a frig fight. I know it's almost unthink able isn't it
and just for reference purposes just cos I'm in one of those moods. I previously mentioned that a rifter in a 'similar' fit to a slasher will have more damage and tank than the slasher. Here is an example.
Shield rifter 3x 150 AC II (RF PP) 1 Rocket II (CN Inferno)
1mn AB II Faint scram or web!!?!?!? MSE II
Micro Aux Power I 2x Gyro II
2 x Processor Overclock Project ambit
Stats all lvl V
EHP: 3857 DPS: 160 Speed: 1160
Shield slasher 3x 150 AC II (RF PP) 1 small neut
1mn AB II Faint scram Web MSE II
Micro Aux Power I 1 Gyro II
Project Burst 2x Project Ambit
Stats
EHP: 3344 (513 less) DPS: 130 (30 less or roughly 23% more dps for the rifter) Speed: 1401 (+241)
So when answering the question: Which is better with a similar fit, rifter or slasher?
Well in this case the rifter has substantially more dps and better tank. The best case for these two would the slasher running away.
But thats all EFT warrioring and is complete utter bullshite when two players actually meet in space.
Really all the people arguing (including me) need to stop thinking in pure numbers in eft and think about what your opponent is doing rather than what eft say he can do.
Have fun out there kiddies and lighten up, it's a game don't take it too seriously.
tl;dr I'm messing with you now cos I'm bored of these stoopid arguements, feel free to chat among yourselves That is the Way, the Tao.

ItGÇÖs long, read at your own peril (TLDR version at the end).
Yesterday had an interesting fight against a tristan. I rarely win against tristans, and since in the systems I usually roam there are lots of neut tristans I usually donGÇÖt engage them unless I can dictate the rules of the engagement (waiting for them at a plex instead of going for them).
I donGÇÖt know what buffs the other pilot had, if he had them, or his fit. I just can try to explain how the fight went on. I started the fight at 7.5k, out of neut range, this was not a plated rifter, there was no speed enhancement mods or plates/trimarks, and I believe the tristan had neither also. So press keep at range, ab, guns and rep pre-overheated as usual, tristan goes into approach mode, and everything is fine at the start. I do damage, his drones do their work, etc, rifter was faster at this point, then when the rifter reached his GÇÿkeep at rangeGÇÖ distance, he just turned back a little and then turned back away trying to get out again. Tristan was at 6k now, neuting, and gaining the range I will not get back again since he was in full acceleration mode and I wasnGÇÖt there yet.
I lose really a lot of fights, I engage things I shouldnGÇÖt, IGÇÖm outplayed most of the time, I make the wrong decisions all the time, I consider myself a GÇÿpvp noob in progressGÇÖ. I could have started the fight at 20k and waited for the tristan to send his drones at me, use the web, kill them, and then go to 9 to try to kill the tristan when the number of drones was acceptable (the tristan could always pull off his drones or get out since he was out of scram range). I could have started the fight at 9k instead of 7.5k, but the damage barrage produces at that range is inferior to the damage 5 warriors/hobgoblins can do. instead of keeping range at 7.5k I could put keep at range at 10000k and adjust the speed dial manually to stay in the 7.5 range, that way the ship would not turn around by itself unless I told it to do it but if the other pilot sling shot me I would get back to square 1. Or I could have just bailed when I saw the tristan coming. I could had made lotGÇÖs of things different, this fight was a very good fight, and it got me thinking (yes it happens), there is a thing that fights against the rifter itself all the time, mass.
Speed ships (minmatar), they have a speed advantage, and then they have mass to slow them down. Example: Breacher vs Tristan speed wise, breacher is faster without mods, put a mwd on each ship, max level skills, and Tristan now have the same speed as breacher. Put the speed enhancement mods you want on both ships with the mwd, Tristan will continue to have the same speed as breacher. The speed advantage on the ship initial stats doesnGÇÖt exist anymore.
TLDR Minmatar ships have more base speed, this speed advantage is negated by mass.
There are a few hulls in all races with speed in mind despite base speed, is not only the stabber and the vagabond, and despite the usual homogenization concerns thatGÇÖs good since speed is valuable and provides a gaming experience all races should have access to in one ship or another, but the speed race is something that really doesnGÇÖt exist anymore.
I remember a heavy nerf to the mass of minmatar ships a few years ago (nano age? 2009? 2010?). Please balancing team, recheck mass in Minmatar (and other races) ships, I donGÇÖt think the current values/direction make sense anymore. I understand that Minmatar ships canGÇÖt really be 1st in speed and 1st in mass, but 1st in speed and last or close to last in mass? The base speed advantage is being negated completely, only with the usual propulsion mod in some cases. |

Mass doesn't modify speed. It modifies inertia, changing the time it takes to reach your maximum speed (but not actually making a difference to what that is).
I don't understand what you mean about a prop mod negating a speed advantage. A hull's speed is the base value which all subsequent multipliers affect (ie prop mods, nanos or overdrives, snakes etc). Rifter and Breacher with identical prop mods will not have the same speed.
And you should have heated your prop mod for one cycle. Hooray, I'm l33t! -á(Kil2: "The higher their ship losses...the better they're going to be.") |

It seems you only read the TLDR version :) Prop mod was overheated. Mass modifies speed when prop mods are involved, afterburner, microwarpdrive, which means ALL the time. In my example, Breacher have a higher base speed than a Tristan, fit a MWD to both, and final speed will be the same thanks to the differences in mass.
The base speed difference when comparing Minmatar frigates with other races frigates does not really exist (or exists and is very small) when you add an AB or a MWD, which is all the time. |
