NO! You can't have my stuff!
Are there any other good space/science fiction games out there?
I don't want a doom/quake clone. I want to fly ships in space and have a good lag-free time doing it.
Wow! That drone nerf eliminated all lag!
Just like the highway nerf eliminated all lag!
Meet the new lag, WORSE than the old lag!
Happy RMR everyone! |

There's this great game called "Elite". You fly a Cobra MKII and you start out as a noob, but then you kill and kill and loot and loot and become famous and climb up the ranks.. You even have to steer your spaceship into the station! Eventually you'll be known as ELITE spelled in purple and then you know that you're BEST there is! No lag like in EVE.. No great graphics like in EVE... No other human players like in EVE to annoy you... No offline skilltraining like in EVE to annoy your power gaming habits... It only takes up maybe 1 MB of space on your HD and it will never crash! Oh.. Wait this is the year 2005 soon 2006 Damn... Back to EVE

In fact, Weird World: Return to Infinte Space is even better! Funny, since it's the sequel :-)

damn straight, excellent combat system and half-decent economy, on-line element lacks slightly due to player-run servers but it has an excellent modding community.
*shameless plug alert* check out Xtreme Team Studios for some wicked mods etc (i run that site btw )
X3 is another fantastic game but can be a little system intensive and not quite as action based as freelancer.
Another superb game i have wasted many hours on is starlancer, very similar to freelancer, but a classic non-the-less.

I enjoyed X3 for a lil bit but the 3d engine seems to need a supercumputer to get good performance. I run 1.2 gb mem - 2.8 ghz athlon and a 9800 pro with 256 mb onboadr ram (on an nforce 2 mobo) and it ran like ****.
For me there's only ever been Elite and EvE Online. -TT

X-Wing Alliance: Best joystick controlled space sim out there. The flight model is fantastic. It's based on aerodynamic flight, but it makes for epic dogfights and twitch-based gaming that's second to none. It's a bit dated now (Came out in '99!!!) but still a fantastic game that I play every once in a while. Check out www.xwaupgrade.com to help update the graphics a bit.
Freelancer: Good looking, fun, mouse-controlled, Eve-esque game. The lack of joystick control put me off at first, but the good (albeit short) storyline, expansive universe, good graphics, and nifty ship upgrades made this a solid, fun game. Even after beating the storyline, there's lots of exploring, ship upgrading, and fighting left to be done. However, once you've done all that, it gets boring. I couldn't get into the online aspect, as it just seemed like something of a free-for-all and got old quickly.
I miss the days of space sims. The only viable series out right now is X3, and while that game looks gorgeous the flight model is horrible and my joystick-jockey self can't handle it. I pray for a sequel to X-Wing Alliance, Freelancer, or Wing Commander. _______________ Spiritu Sanctum |

any of the old wingcommander games! they rule.
There is also the very elite / eve like game that is played from a top down view, with lots of cool missions and stuff if for the mac and windows, but for the life of me I can't remember it's name...

I think you mean Haegemonia, if you dont then you should check it out, excellent game, you can play in a 3D world or switch to tactical map view, it rocks.

Haegemonia is Space based RTS , but very good - and recently had an expansion pack,
Also very good, but unknown was Nexus : The Jupiter Incident
Fantastic game, amazing graphics, but sadly dodgy acting

I can't believe no-one's mentioned Independence War/I-War 2 yet. "Realistic" physics and the second one is good for pirates.
Another game with realistic physics is Starshatter. Decent indy game.
