So how much trouble could a person get into if they had access to a Gerber Autocarve 3D and made some nice Bias Relief artwork using EVE artwork?
Assuming they had no plans to sell any copies.

Originally by: kieron We will be adding ship models to the EVE Store in the future. The Brutix from the FanFest (shown here in the hands of its owner, Shin Ra, winner of the PvP Championship) and also featured in E-ON Issue #001, is one of two prototypes in existence. It is also made with a new process allowing the graphics to be molded into the model. Unfortunately, I do not have an estimate on when they will appear in the store, or what other ships will be available.
Model kits are an entirely different animal. The process of making a model kit is lengthy, complicated and very expensive. We have looked into this as an option, but it is unfeasible for us to do.
ooooo! would be great to have a 1/x modell of a Tempest standing on my desk Like 0.5 to 1m high, made of metal bits and stuff(not cheap plastic)

I'd think Forgeworld would be a good option to look into. They're expensive, but they do great work.

I would imagine that at least for some of the ships it could be very hard to make a casting-type mold since many/most/not much of any are such that they'd be easily drafted...
I'm sure SOMEONE is familiar enough with resin models, that they could work together with someone, or maybe themselves have the means....
expanding on what Vandar was saying... if someone(I don't) had the knowlege and means to create the molds and such to make resin or maybe plaster cast? models of ships, ect., if they only sold the castings for cost and shipping and such, rather than making a profit...
I bet quite a few people would be VERY interested, even if it was just a undecorated multi-part resin casting they could put together and do up.
you never know, ;)
hell I know I'd probably be interested even, if I could get say like a megathron,
bet you could start simple, like with a vexor to try it out and see how the results turned out. I would imagine communicating with CCP, not making a profit on it, and all would probabbly prevent any "real" problems.

there was a thread on this - a guy made some Apoc models using metal.
being a (very) amateur modeller myself, I can say that modelling the ships is feasible but it depends on the scale.
The smaller you do them, the less you have to worry about detail. this also means that the model comes in one to three parts (depending on the ship) and is very simple to put together.
Once you get into larger scale then the problems multiply big time. purely because you HAVE to put in all the detail we can see in game otherwise there'll be people all over the forums bleating away. It is possible though.
There are various people I know of in the UK who would be more than capable of producing something like this. There are even some rule sets out there, varying in difficulty, that could be easily adapted should any wargamers wish to use these models.
Put it this way. you could produce a smaller scale that would enable people to wargame whole fleet battles very easily (although in this scale cruisers and below would probably be too small to represent) And also go for a couple of larger scales - one for skirmish type games and the other (largest, most detailed) scale purely for show models. Such as the brutix in the picture.
Working in metal would be the best material for the smaller scales with possibly a plastic/metal mix for the larger scales. although Resin is getting much better in quality these days and so shouldnt be discounted.
I would love to see something like this and if I can help in any way at all I will. however please please please dont let GW get their hands on this (most people should know who I'm talking about) They produce nice models, but their games rules and attitude to gaming in general is led purely by profit and nothing else - this is my personal opinion so no flames please.

I like the idea of sculpture-type models much more than built-it-yourself models, they always look cooler. Besides, purposely making something in tiny little pieces always seemed terribly inefficient and counterproductive to me. (I may be a bit Caldari IRL)
...that's not to say I haven't built a few models in my time
Anyway, PLEASE do a Harpy! Whatever the going rate is for frigate models, I'd pay double to get the best-looking ship in EVE. Pleeeeease?!?!? -------------------------------------[04:04:04] Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk

Having a 50 cm high metal model of a tempest with the level of detail on it similar to that of the tempest model made for the evol movie (if anyone has a link to that thread it would be handy ) would be the COOLEST thing ever, i dont care how much it would cost i would buy it (please ccp, make a pest and make it a kickass model )

Sounds great, but i have one question though, will the be made from plastic, or will there be a more expensive version of brass or something ? i for one would like a bulk set of minmatar ships in brass ;O)

Without wanting to derail this thread, while you're adding stuff to the shop:
Please please please please add a giant ship size comparison poster!
I've got some walls 3m high, and I'm willing to move to a new place if you can find a place printing them larger (want to be able to see details on the Claw, you see?).

And the model given out at the Fan Fest was that of a Brutix Battlecruiser. I wanted one...
It's becoming more and more apparent to me that everyone seems to have children, or a wife...
I am 18, with no girlfriend. I still live with my parents, and I go to college. Are people under 20 in short supply in this game?? I think I know 5 people who are under 20, 2 of which I know in real life, and I know quite a few people!
I should just give in and go play on world of warcraft where I can be as immature as I like, and talk about **** and stupid childish things, and smacktalk all over the place... this game doesn't nurture my immaturity!

As for models. Games Workshop has a spacefleet type game called Battlefleet Gothic. Im sure a small extension of what they are already doing with metal, resin and plastic models wouldnt be too hard.
I love space ships. I want one.

The models are nice, the game is complete crap and far too expensive. as I said before do NOT let GW get their hands on it.
there are a lot of manufacturers out there who could do a superb job and not charge the earth for the models.
this has great potential for CCP but they must give it to the right people and GW are most definitely NOT the right people.
Once again - this is my personal opinion (but I am not alone) so flame if you must.

A model of a tempest would be frickin awesome, but the sails would have to be translucent too. Just a side note, I've seen pulsh toys in the shapes of microbes and viruses, why not plush ships too :D Wouldn't have to be very details, just the basic shape with a print on it. http://home.comcast.net/~jasonn/atar1.jpg Custom sigs for 5mil - evemail me

Making plastic model kits (a la Airfix et al) is hideously expensive. Yes, it's cheaper to make a top 500 supercomputer than get into model making.
The problem is, a good mold has to be crafted into high quality metal. It's the opposite of making tin soldiers, where the mold is cheap, and the tin soldiers themselves relatively expensive by comparison. Starting a production line for plastic models is just stunningly expensive. If you want quality, that is. If you want bathtub ducks, it's a lot cheaper, of course.
I've been thinking about building a meter or so long Mammoth, but what I lack is blueprints. Is it possible to get Eve ship model blueprints of some sort, or maybe get 3D models in some format where they're easily accessible? I'd love to build a ship or two, but making them based on just screenshots is a biatch.
Also, if I make them, can I sell them for ISK?

From the documentation I've read, you can, even with some colors. It involves extracting the models, transforming them with the appropriate tools to the solid-thingie-printed and paying a hefty sum to get one, depends on size. Last I saw, there was such a machine available for university use somewhere in the canada and it costed ~$30 to get a model at the size of a palm.
I won't bother searching for the link again, if one gets to do an evesearch on model and megathron (that's how the topic started) you'll prolly find the links etc...
