Carebears are those that join an alliance to mine high-ends and then complain in alliance chat that they are ganked in HED with 50k zyd in their haulers, they wont show up to protect their homelands either, or those that sit in high-sec all the time to reap of the rewards without willing to take any risk or face any challange. PvPers are those that fight either with guns, on the market or with intel they gather, they want competition on a multiplayer basis.
If the carebears all decided to leave someday, nothing would change, most of the pvp corps have their own production department.
Depends on how you define carebears, I think carebears are the peeps who avoid fighting. But you have to take some risks sometimes, you can't do it all without any risk like you suggest. And if you whine about losing a hauler in low sec you should play something else I guess

As has already been said, not everyone gets their kicks from blowing stuff up. Its gratifying to put a lot of time into mining/NPCing/whatever for a big beautiful ship, and be able to enjoy the fruits of your labors.
One of the more annoying things about the forums is everyone going on about how eve is a pirate game or a carebear game or a npc game or whatever. Eve is what you make of it, if killing is your thing then great, if mining is your thing thats cool too. To each their own. I personally enjoy both blowing stuff up and building/npcing (mining annoys me quickly but I sometimes still do it), depending on my mood at the time. I guess this makes me...a pirbear? A carerat? _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Intelligent
Anyone who limits to one is boring imo. This is EVE, not some "normal" MMO. In this game, despite the new ships/skills etc its still easy to lose a couple of years and do everything ya want with one character.

It's the same as with all other games, I don't like 1st person shooting games but I do like some more tactical stuff like C&C
There's actually quite a lot of tactics involved in PvP, including intelligence gathering (spies and covert ops), logistics, deception, and maneuvering your opponent into a fight where the situation favors you over him (sometimes getting your opponent into a fight at all can be a challenge, and a real accomplishment when you manage it). Moreover, this can be taken beyond the individual to the level of fleet operations and fleet command.
There a lot to be achieved through PvP, such as taking over a region for your own use, defending that region from others who want it, acquiring rare/expensive modules from ships you take out, etc.
Don't take this wrong and it really isn't aimed at you per say but more in general. But isn't the purpose of what you explain above the entire benifit of it end up being pve? I mean to take over a region and chase everyone out. Isn't that only so that you can either mine or rat hunt in the region without being harrassed? I mean if your not doing that after you control it then why are you doing it? So that you can sit in space safe? That would be a bit boring.
Don't get me wrong I pvp and live in .0. But the core reasoning behind "pvp" to take over a region or area is to control the resources or at least thats the justification and if its not that then what exactly would it be if any.

I would say the OP was a troll. Blowing stuff up in Eve isn't all that much fun compared to other adrenaline pumping games I've played - at least there isn't much motor skill required. Even for Cerebral PvP, I prefer playing Chess on ICC. It's much more fun.

Yes and no, I think it has to do with power. You as a corp/alliance want to controll a region, just because you can. If you don't need the ores you can allow others (friends) to mine them, and ask them for money/cheaper ships.... So I think there can be many reasons for PVP

Perhaps I misunderstood, but isn't the diverse community one of the major attractions to this game? Honestly, if it's about combat there are games that are far superior to this one (without even looking very far).
This is a game based on a large diverse civilization. Some work to achieve power through dignity while others try to achieve it through tretchery. All the while these two philosophies try to survive the tactics of the other.
Who could possibly care wether they're doing this through combat, market manipulation, or mining? I mean seriously, does anyone ACTUALLY care that not everyone is in o.o? If so then I really would recommend other games that are far more geared toward that form of enjoyment.
Pollus, out.

Personally, a home region is a place to carebear for money so I can afford to go out and blow people up (and get shot up in return), and also for my corp's industrial wing to do what needs doing to keep us warmongers in kitted-out ships, while also raking in some cash for themselves at the same time. Everybody wins.

Yes it would who do you think would supply all the resources you need to produce all those ships you lose in PVP. PVP is POINTLESS and VERY boreing plus its gains you nothing. So why bother.

-blinks- Did I just hear right? That PvP is pointless?
a.) It allows you to control territory, which b.) allows you to make more money, which c.) allows you to PvP more, because d.) PvP is fun
"C" and "d" might not exist for some people, but there's always mercoxite, crokite, arkonor, and bistot to mine, as well as the lower-end rocks for those who enjoy mining. For NPCers, the rats provide good bounties and excellent loot - moreover, in some regions you can work for pirate agents if you want, and mission rewards in 0.0 are greater than in Empire.
As for being boring, yes and no. It can be the most dull thing in existence, on par with mining, on days where all of your opponents run away from you or dock. In contrast, some days it's fight after fight - and those days are what make the game (for me, anyway). -Wrayeth

Edited by: Pollus on 21/12/2005 16:02:17 That whole "what would happen if the builder/miner weren't here?" is just flawed logic. I'll tell you precisely what would happen if all the miner/builders left the game....the market would be set by NPCs and not a single thing would change.
No one would even notice.
Course, then this would be a really limited game for obvious reasons. As I mentioned before, this game would not survive very long as a PvP only setup.

To me the term carebear means someone who wants all the rewards without the risks, this can mean a industrialist who won't come out of high sec, a pirate who sits 300km off of a gate aligned with 7 stabs low or someone who will PVP in a fleet where they only engage 2:1 advantage or outgun them by that ratio.
I have industrialists in my alliance who go out in 0.0 and do what's needed, these guys are pure gold just like everyone in the alliance who makes it their mission to aid their fellows in the common goal.
PVP in the form of competition in all it's forms beats the PVE hands down in my and a lot of alliance members opinion, what I can't understand is someone who runs missions all day, but then I don't pay their sub so it's just my opinion and nothing more.

Why do you use an alt to post with? To afraid of post with your main? Why post if you dont dare to post with your main? darn forum trolls.

You know what I find funny about the kind of thing the OP says?
Is that if a non-Eve player criticizes Eve by saying its boring suddenly all these l337 PVP Eve Fanboys retort by stating how much there is to do in the game.
Yet everything that isnt PVP = care bear.

If the game mechanics allow it, it's OK!

Yup. That's the definition I'd use too. Some people don't understand that you can be a 'carebear' AND a 'pirate'.
The OP is obviously a troll who hasn't thought it all through whatsoever, nevertheless this thread has generated some interesting thoughts.
Trying to pigeonhole people according to their activites is like trying to categorise music. It's possible, to a certain extent, but as soon as you create a category or label for something, you will see that not everything can be fitted into your neat little genres. Very few things in Eve, or life for that matter, are black and white

In response to the OP, I find it best to remain non judgemental. Don't judge others by your own standards. Personal preference exists - try not to be harsh to one group just because it's not your group.

One thing carebears have going for them is they don't have to worry about losing implants. I use +1s and 2s because I lose them alot but a carebear can use a set of +5s without ever losing them and get more sp than a pvper.
