I see no flaw in any suggestion that allows people to Practice PVP in a low risk manner, in an effort to encourage people to try it/make them better at doing the real thing.
Do we need a game mechanic for it? Not sure... But I do know that fighting corp mates to hull 1v1 just doesn't do it for me... Nor does going off into 0.0 or low sec and preying on some poor fool for the rush.
I think there maybe should be some sort of an arena setup where all there is to lose respect and or maybe admission cost. But we already have singularity... But still thats not the same.
One of the key points I think that needs repeating from the OP and others is that the cost of learning to PVP by trial and error, especialy if you lack contacts in the field, is prohibitive. It costs reputation, AS WELL AS In game assets.
As with my example of just loading up and hunting randomly in low sec, I'm not just getting some PVP skills, I'm ****ing people off, and might make serious enemies for me or my corp in the process.
But when the time comes to fight for real in space, I have no real idea of what I'm doing... Realistic? maybe... but modern day militaries rely on simulation all the time to get thier soldiers skilled right?
Seriously the jump to PVP can be a harsh one, especialy if you take your in game persona to the level of actually caring what a total stranger thinks of you. If I didn't I'd be bagging kills all the time and vice versa...
Really the idea is a good one, it's just a question of implementation. Anything to ease a player into PVP is a good thing... It will only mean more challenge for those who are already into it... It might even mean more folks willing to risk low/no sec space because they had a chance to see just how well thier ship stacks up against X/Y/Z.
I also think This simulation should have many different possible "formats" than just 1v1 frigate dueling... Been there, done that... You can't learn cruiser combat in a frigate... you just can't. and so on. and 1v1 won't teach you jack about REAL PVP either, because it's very rare that PVP is so evenly matched.
No I like this idea, always have, and wonder why no "Holo space" battleground ever came into EVE... It has so many good applications... Just make sure that there is nothing to lose, and nothing to gain and it's all good.
It might also be good if the ship the Pc wishes to use in the simulation is the one they have currently fitted and active, meaning the PC has to be able to A: afford, B: have the skill to use it. This way a player can test fittings etc as well, based on thier own abilities.
Whats not to love about that? what could possibly be bad about such an idea? What some people decide to do all PVP there? So what... They probably arn't PVPing now either, whats the difference?
